Women have been convinced to accept a specific role that is considered normal stature. Cheerlessly, it has been ultimately assigned to them by American society, or specifically, men. They have endured an enormous fraud which was created by science and other aspects. Barbara Ehrenreich and Deirdre English, authors of the book, For Her Own Good, explicitly provide the readers with the latter that primarily consists of the misconceptions, that women have been required to obtain in the name of science from the nineteenth century to the present. This book is an excellent literature that gives existence to the difficulties that women have experienced. Not only did this allow for expectancy of what the book consists of, but the subtopics of each chapter. For instance, chapter one is titled “In the Ruins of Patriarchy”, and under that, the subtopics, such as “The Woman Question”, “The New Masculinism”, “Feminist and Domestic Solutions”, and further sub topics, that I will later mention, give you a clear representation of what the chapters hold for the reader. Under these terms, I navigated throughout the chapters in a decent manner. Furthermore, the contents of the book is what made it such an interesting and informative book. This allowed me to maintain focus and intrigue throughout my time of reading and studying this book. Prior to commencing the book, For Her Own Good, I believed that it would contain aggressive approaches to feminism, however, it did just the opposite. For instance, in the first chapter, the authors introduce various stories that differ from one another, but serve to prove the the primary point. Ultimately, all of these women that were presented suffered from what we now describe as hysteria, however, a rise of men superiority increased in order to control women even to the smallest details. At the beginning, I will definitely not deny that I was confused with these specific short case stories, nonetheless, the authors astoundingly clarified their intentions in no time. Therefore, it is not a book that is intimidating, but rather astonishingly approachable. For further demonstration, after these short stories, the authors phrase “This book is about the scientific answer to the Woman Question”, which was a phrase that I was pursuing.
