...As the first cooperative board game I have ever played, I was immediately fascinated by the absolute selflessness required from each player in order to win Forbidden Island. Playing the game taught me that there is a difference between a group of people working independently towards a common goal, and a group of teammates working together, cooperatively to achieve a common goal. The former scenario describes most of my past group experiences and the latter aptly describes my experience playing Forbidden Island. Prior to playing the board game, it seemed effective (and convenient) to have team members do their share and compile it to be submitted as the team’s work; it got the job done because everybody contributed and the team’s goal was achieved....

...glance, Forbidden Planet can easily be seen to parallel many other works relating to technology, nature, or both. One of the most obvious parallels is, of course, to Shakespeare's The Tempest, the story of a man stranded on an island which he has single-handedly brought under his control through the use of magic. Indeed, the characters, plot, and lesson of Forbidden Planet mirror almost exactly those of The Tempest, with the exception that where The Tempest employs magic, Forbidden Planet utilizes technology. At this point, it is useful to recall one of Arthur C. Clarke's more famous ideas, which is that any technology, when sufficiently advanced, is indistinguishable from magic. Indeed, the technology presented in Forbidden Planet is not meant to be understood by the audience, but rather is, for all intents and purposes, magic. This is undoubtedly in part because the technology doesn't exist and therefore cannot be explained to us. What is more important, however, is that how the technology works is irrelevant for the purpose of the movie, which is to entertain and to teach us a lesson about man's control over the elements and over his own technological creations. At this point a brief synopsis of the movie would seem to be in order, with special attention as to how it relates to The Tempest. In The Tempest, a man named Prospero and his daughter Miranda have been exiled to a remote island which...

...The author of this document is Emperor Qianlong, ruler of China from 1735 to 1795. He ruled longer than any other ruler of the Qian dynasty. He was an excellent military tactician and under his command, the Manchu empire expanded its territory. This letter was written as a response to requests from King George III. King George III sent Lord McCartney to improve trade relations with China. He was seeking trading restrictions to be more relaxed, the procurement of a small island for British traders to reside and store their goods, and for the establishment of a permanent British Embassy in Beijing. Qian Long, did not like the British diplomat Lord McCartney because he would not perform the kowtow. “Lord McCartney told the Chinese legate...

...metaphysical conceit for life. The blast, or pop, of the bubble, alludes that a popped bubble is akin to death. The Narrator questions how long the bubble will last, because the bubbles will always pop. The Author suggests that life is a bubble; a bubble may float freely and may even cover a great distance before the pop of the bubble, but the pop is imminent so no matter the distance travelled by the bubble it will always just pop in the end. This is the Author’s statement about how we exist to die, so why fight it when it is easier to accept the unavoidable just like the narrator does. Bradstreet alludes to a introduction of the end when she references Adam from the biblical anecdote of Adam and Eve, specifically when Adam consumed the forbidden fruit from the Tree of Knowledge.”For Adam’s sake this Word God spake / when he so high provoked” (lines 7,8). These two lines represent when Adam ate this fruit of knowledge in the Garden of Eden and the subsequent reaction of God when he awards Adam with mortality. This entails the transition from life as something that would be linear and forever into something that now has a circularity, that life is now a bubble. When the Poet mentions God in the poem, not only is it a characteristic of the new found relationship between science and religion, but the usage of terms such as “salvation” aids the narrator finds peace in an idea that is sure to occur, unlike all that is unsure when the pop of the bubble is concerned. That the narrator...

...Case Analysis: DMG- Shanghai GM598ON Spring A 1. It is obvious why guanxi and guanxiwang are so important in China. The people are very focused on connections, and building relationships with people. When you have a culture that is that focused on that, it would be illogical not to. I was always brought up to never burn bridges and build good professional relationships, because you never know when you might need a favor. By building the relationships they did, they were able to film in the Forbidden City. That was all due to the fact that the company respected the Chinese culture and religious beliefs. That would have never happened, had they not been sensitive to those aspects. Building relationships is essential to operating a successful business. I know when I sold advertising I would have never had repeat clients had I not taken the time to build good respectful relationships with them. 2. If a company was to go in to China and try to obey all of the rules and regulations they would be eaten alive. There is no way they would be successful. It seems like the only real rule that has to be followed is guanxi. Rules and regulations can be bent when there is a great working relationship and respect from both parties. Obviously, the company is very attentive to that and takes it very seriously. If a company came in worried only about the rules and not the people they are interacting with, they would essentially be booted out of the country. 3. I would think that...

...Horney Article Paper In Karen Horney's "The Distrust Between the Sexes", she explains how a person's psychological history causes him/her to distrust people of the opposite sex because of certain expectations they might have. Longings for happiness, childhood reflections, and childhood conflicts are all things that invent these expectations. It was interesting to read that these ideas of women being inferior to men are rooted all the way from Adam and Eve. In the article Horney uses the Jewish culture as an example. They have no women idols; they see the woman’s ability to bear children as “partly denied and partly devaluated” because Eve was cursed to bear children in sorrow and because she tempted Adam to take a bite of the forbidden apple they see women as sexual temptresses, “who plunge men into misery”. While I was reading the article the only thing I couldn’t stop thinking about was what happened between my best friend and I, and it wasn’t just because his name happens to be Adam. We were best friends all throughout high school until our senior year. He was and still is the only person who ever understood me better than I even understand myself; it was like he could read my mind. I can say with complete confidence that I never had one romantic thought about him our whole friendship; it was just like we were meant to be best friends. I can’t speak for him but I can guess that he never held any romantic feelings for me either. We did everything together, went everywhere...

...Dong Won Moon Ms. Jana Russ World Civilizations: China 23 July 2009 What were the reasons which caused Qing Dynasty to fall? And why is that important? What was the opportunity that does China got a foothold in modernization? What is the last Kingdom of the history of China? The Qing dynasty was the last kingdom ever lasted in Chinese history. In fact, the fall of the Qing dynasty facilitated modernization of China, however there were three main reasons which caused collapse of Qing dynasty: Empress Dowager Cixi, Opium war and rebellions during Qing period. First, who is Empress Dowager Cixi? As the textbook “CHINA: A Cultural, Social, and Political History” by Patricia Buckley Ebrey said the Cixi was most powerful person during the self-strengthening period. To maintain her authority, she chose her four years old cousin after her son’s death. The record also said that Cixi was a skillful political operator (p.223). However, Cixi was sided with conservative parts which caused French fleet attack on China (p.224). So this was the reason why Qing got attacked from foreign forces which the dynasty gradually got weakened, so Cixi was one of the reason why Qing dynasty got perished. This was also pretty interesting issue that it was kind of opposite view comparing to Kangxi who lived to perceive the Qing Empire firmly established (p.190). Another big issue that caused Qing dynasty to fall was the Opium War. As the textbook by Ebrey, it said that by the late 18th century...

...SE2421 Contemporary Women’s Writing Week 5: 1 November 2011 Dr Becky Munford (munfordr@cardiff.ac.uk) Margaret Atwood, The Handmaid’s Tale (1985) Language, bodies, desire [pic] Word games (1) ‘I didn’t know what it meant, or even what language it was in….Still, it was a message, and it was in writing, forbidden by that very fact, and it hadn’t yet been discovered. Except by me, for whom it was intended.’ (chapter 9, p. 62) (2) ‘So that’s what’s in the forbidden room! Scrabble!...Now it’s forbidden, for us. Now it’s dangerous. Now it’s indecent. Not it’s something he can’t do with his Wife. Now it’s desirable…We play two games. Larynx, I spell. Valance. Quince. Zygote. I hold the glossy counters with their smooth edges, finger the letters. The feeling is voluptuous. This is freedom, an eyeblink of it. Limp, I spell. Gorge. What a luxury. The counters are like candies, made of peppermint, cool like that. Humbugs, those were called. I would like to put them into my mouth. They would also taste of lime. The letter C. Crisp, slightly acid on the tongue, delicious.’ (chapter 23, p. 149) (3) Offred uses [scrabble] as a mirror for herself, as a way of hearing her own voice in an otherwise engulfing, enforced silence. Atwood uses it, I would suggest, as an image of the text, as a mise en abîme, in which one can see this autobiographical ‘tale’ as a Scrabble board on which we must also play. If we have trouble with the plotting of the narrative or the structure...

...George Orwell's essay 'Shooting an Elephant' gives remarkable insight into the human psyche. The essay presents a powerful theme of inner conflict. Orwell feels strong inner conflict between what he believes as a human being, and what he believes and should do as an imperial police officer. The author is amazingly effective in illustrating this conflict by providing specific examples of contradictory feelings, by providing an anecdote that exemplified his feelings about his situation, and by using vivid imagery to describe his circumstances. A police officer in the British Raj, the supposedly 'unbreakable'; ruling force, was afraid. With his gun aimed at an elephant's head, he was faced with the decision to pull the trigger. That officer was George Orwell, and he writes about his experience in his short essay “Shooting an Elephant” to save face, he shrugged it off as his desire to “avoid looking the fool” (George Orwell, 77). In truth, the atmosphere of fear and pressure overwhelmed him. His inner struggle over the guilt of being involved in the subjugation of a people added to this strain, and he made a decision he would later regret enough to write this story. In his essay, Orwell describes how the abuses and treatment he witnessed oppressed him with an intolerable sense of guilt, (Orwell, 72). This is not some minor pang, or nagging worry. The shame pressed down on his shoulders with an unbearable weight. He also describes the injustices in detail...

...The Last Emperor: Truth and Misleading In 1987, a film came into theaters across the globe about China’s last emperor. The Last Emperor, directed by Bernardo Bertolucci, shows the life of Pu-Yi from when he enters the Forbidden City at age three to become emperor of China, to his final days as a reformed man. The film, although it showed how China was during the Qing Dynasty in a fairly honest light, also had its downfalls. Many problems plagues the last years of the Qing Dynasty, such as the Republic Revolutions, opium, warlords, and the confusing relationship with Japan and it’s government during this time. These issues were either not touched on or barely noticeable during the almost three hour long film. The story of Pu Yi, China’s last emperor, starts with him being taken to the Forbidden City at the age of three. The Dowager Empress “arranged once more for a boy emperor.” (Morton, 174) Pu Yi would not stay emperor long, as he would lose that title in 1912 because of the Republican Revolution. Formed by Sun Yat-Sen, it was a revolution against imperial rule. This revolution was also largely a military revolt and the beginnings of a fast changing government. In the film this Revolution seemed to hardly happen. Although the young emperor was being protected from the outside world, it would have made the film more historically clear if this event was explained more in depth. As an important event during that was part of Pu Yi’s loss of power, the Republic Revolution should...

This shows what Adam and Eve did when they listened to the snake in the garden of eden. DISTINCTIVE ELEMENTS Basically, the picture shows two frames and each frame contain apples that have bites. What makes them distinct is one frame is crowded with apples that there is no room left and the other frame is only filled with a few apples which still has a lot of room. Analysis of Principles The artwork is repetitious and chaotic. USE OF LIGHT The artwork has a warm tone due to the redness of the apple. Likewise shadowy, because the artwork looks dark and mysterious. SPACE AND LANDSCAPE For the right frame, the canvas was filled with apples leaving no negative space. On the other frame, it only shows a...

...paint a picture when describing places or people’s faces, making the reader really connect the situation together. “It was a large room bright with sunshine and yellow paint, and containing 20 beds… The air was continuously alive with gay synthetic melodies.” With a twist, you wouldn't have guessed this is a hospital. The more you read the more you can see progression happen within the characters, for example Helmholtz, who is a dark and mysterious tortured, first realizes he’s not like the rest which helps him overcome conditioning and starts to become an individual, “I’m thinking of a queer feeling I sometimes get, a feeling I’ve got something to say and the power to say it...”(Huxley p.69) But other people like him get sent away to an island, “All the people who aren’t satisfied with orthodoxy, who’ve got independant ideas of their own.” (Huxley p.227) They rather get rid of them amongst other things than dealing with them. There is also a mention of a hallucination inducing drug that is given out by the government to the citizens called soma, also known as “the perfect drug”. The citizens have been conditioned to rely and take the drug whenever they feel anything but happiness. This shows how much power the World State continues to obtain over the population and they can’t get enough of it. This is not only with adults but starting from when they’re fetuses they’re exposed to chemicals and drugs trying to make them “perfect” before they’re even born. The embryos are kept in...
