...Foreign Literature History & Literature students are expected to take a course in the literature of a foreign language in which works are read in the original language. We do not require you to speak or write papers in the target language. Students may also fulfill the foreign literature requirement by receiving a foreign language citation. A foreign language citation requires four semesters of a foreign language beyond the first year. If a student completes a foreign language citation, the highest-level language class will be the course that will officially count for concentration credit, and the grade for that class will be calculated into the concentration GPA. History & Literature expects students to gain sufficient fluency to work meaningfully with primary texts in your foreign language and to be reading in the language of your choice by the end of the junior year. Therefore, students in History & Literature need to fulfill the foreign literature requirement by the end of their junior year. In special circumstances, exceptions to this deadline may be made. For example, students fulfilling the foreign literature requirement with a language citation may request permission to complete the requirement in the fall of senior year. Students should consult with the Assistant Directors of Studies if they anticipate not being able to meet the foreign literature requirement by the end of their junior year. The Courses that Count for the Foreign Literature requirement are...

...THEOLOGICAL FACULTY. The Principal, as has been already mentioned, teaches no class. Class of Professor of Divinity. The duty imposed upon the Professor of Divinity is very arduous. In addition to the Lectures which ne has to deliver, he was in the practice of hearing the numerous Discourses which the Church requires before young men can be admitted to probationary trials. Pre viously to the appointment of Dr. Chalmers as joint Professor with Dr. Ritchie, the whole of the Discourses were heard by the Professor of Theology ; and some conception of the arduousness of the task may be formed from the following account given in the Appendix to the Returns from the University of Edinburgh. The number of Students enrolled each Session, has for these five years past been above 200. The Law of the Church impera tively prescribes that each of them shall deliver five Discourses before being taken on trials for licence. It is obvious, therefore, from this, taken in conjunction with the period during which continuance at the Divinity Hall is necessary, that each Student must deliver at least one Discourse, and many of them two or more in one and the same Session. This necessa rily interfered very much with the lecturing department, the number of Lectures delivered each Session amounting to 40, and the Professor, from the causes stated, finding it impos sible to enlarge the number. Dr. Ritchie's Lectures explained and illustrated the topics, both direct and collateral, suggested by the...

[2] "Inventory", to many small business owners is one of the more visible and tangible aspects of doing business. Raw materials, goods in process and finished goods all represent various forms of inventory. Each type represents money tied up until the inventory leaves the company as purchased products. Likewise, merchandise stocks in a retail store contribute to profits only when their sale puts money into the cash register. In a literal sense, inventory refers to stocks of anything necessary to do business. These stocks represent a large portion...

...CHAPTER 2 Review of Related Literature and Studies This chapter contains the review of our researchers’ successfully scouted related literatures (both of foreign and local). Foreign Literature Most or, I can say many literatures and studies believe that there are many factors affecting the study habits of a student. One of which, is the number of hours a student spends in class. According to the Palm Beach Community Council (PBBC, 2008), they recommend that students should have at least three hours out of class for every hour spent in one class. They’ve also stated that a student must have a special place to study with plenty of room to work. And students should not be cramped. They presuppose that study time will go better if a learner would take a few minutes before starting, to straighten things up. A desk and straight-backed chair is usually best. “Don’t get too comfortable—a bed is a place to sleep, not to study” as what they’ve said. A student must also have everything close at hand (book, pencils, paper, coffee, dictionary, computer, calculator, tape recorder, etc.) before starting to study. Students are not suggested to spend time on jumping up and down to get things. Frank Pogue (2000) did a research project to determine why students fail. What he founds to be true in that study habits survey, was that more than 30 years ago, still rings true today—students fail because they don’t know how to study. The best advice he could give is to develop sound study skills...

Therefore, the implementation in this period was restricted into extensive drills...

...As P.T. Barnum, one of the greatest creative minds in the entertainment business once said, “Literature is one of the most interesting and significant expressions of humanity.” Literature is considered the heroes of stories and poems. That means they are not weak in plot or character, carefully crafted by the author and they have stood the test of time as a beloved classic. Literature is never constant, but always changing just as the people and culture change throughout the years. Firstly, language has gone through massive changes throughout the centuries, which in turn will change the way the books and poems are written. It transformed from a West Germanic language like Dutch, which was very difficult to understand, to “Middle English”. It...

...Literary Education and Canon Formation: The Liberian Experience S. Kpanbayeazee Duworko, II Introduction For the past fourteen years, the name ‘Liberia’ has been inextricably linked to warlords, war exportation and gunrunning in the west African subregion. These linkages, a result of the activities of the country’s leadership, made Liberia an international pariah and brought about the imposition of economic sanctions by the United Nations. Within the comity of nations, Liberia came to be viewed as a country that significantly contributed to the destabilization of the subregion through encouragement and support given to various armed groups that allegedly attacked Sierra Leone, Guinea and La Côte d’Ivoire. Liberia, nevertheless, is also associated with legendary contributions to Africa and the world at large. These contributions range from the fields of politics to sports, medicine, and religion. In the area of politics, Liberia produced Angie Brooks Randolph, the first African female President of the UN General Assembly. In sports, specifically in soccer, Liberia produced George Oppong Weah, the only African so far to capture two major football titles: World Best from the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) and European Best from the European Football Association (UEFA). In medicine, Liberia produced the renowned cardiologist, Jerome Ngana, and the prominent AIDS researcher, Stephen Kennedy. In religion, Liberia produced Prophet Wade Harris...

...This is a 3-page paper on the role of Greek and Roman literature and the role it plays in today’s society. THE ROLE OF GREEK AND ROMAN LITERATURE Over the years, literature of ancient Greece and Rome has affected art, religion, philosophy, science and mathematics, medicine, drama, and poetry profoundly. It has served as a basic model for the development of later European literatures and, consequently, the writings of the historians, geographers, philosophers, scientists, and rhetoricians are read today as sources of historical information and enjoyment. Alfred Whitehead, the famous British philosopher-mathematician, once commented that: “[A]ll philosophy is but a footnote to Plato” (Comptons Encyclopedia). A similar point can be made regarding Greek literature as a whole. The Greek world of thought was far ranging and ideas discussed today have been previously debated by ancient writers. In fact, until recently, in Western culture, an acquaintance with classical Latin (as well as Greek) literature was basic to a liberal education. Roman literature such as epic and lyric poetry, rhetoric, history, comic drama and satire (the last genre being the only literary form that the Romans invented) serve as today’s backbone for a basic understanding of expression and artistic creativity, as well as history. Greek comedies such as those of Naevius and Andronicus, as well as historical writings in epic poems (First Punic War), tell the story of Rome and its conquests and served...

...http://www.historytoday.com/jerome-de-groot/signposts-historical-fiction These were some of the questions raised at a recent conference at the Institute of Historical Research at which History Today Editor, Paul Lay, hosted a discussion between Hilary Mantel, author of Wolf Hall, and the Tudor historian David Loades. Historians often describe themselves as detectives, seeking out a kind of truth among the conflicting evidence of the past. There is, furthermore, a large and growing subgenre of historical crime fiction. From C.J. Sansom to Philip Pullman, from Orhan Pamuk to Walter Mosley, from Ellis Peters to Boris Akunin, novelists have been keen to use the past as a backdrop for their stories of detection and mystery. The most famous historical detective might be Brother William of Baskerville in Umberto Eco’s peerless The Name of the Rose (Il nome della rosa, 1980). Recently we have seen a flowering of historical crime fiction as the subgenre attains maturity and becomes increasingly popular and innovative. Jason Goodwin, Philip Kerr and Susan Hill were all shortlisted for the prestigious Crime Writers Association Dagger this year (recent historical winners include Arianna Franklin, Jake Arnott and Craig Russell). Clearly the combination of thriller, crime and historical detail is compelling. Anne Perry’s new Inspector Pitt novel, Betrayal at Lisson Grove (out in paperback from Headline this year) is a pacy, twisting thriller. It is 1895 and Pitt is up against a conspiracy...

...History of Philippine Literature in English I. Pre-Colonial Period - Consisted of early Filipino literature passed down orally; oral pieces have a communal authorship – it was difficult to trace the original author of the piece since oral literature did not focus on ownership or copyright, rather on the act of storytelling itself; - Many oral pieces became lost in the wave of the new literary influence brought about by the Spanish colonization; however, according to the Philippine Literature: A History & Anthology, English Edition (Lumbera, B. & Lumbera C.), the pre-colonial period of Philippine literature is considered the longest in the country’s history; - Literature in this period is based on tradition, reflecting daily life activities such as housework, farming, fishing, hunting, and taking care of the children as well; - Oral pieces told stories which explained heroes and their adventures; they attempted to explain certain natural phenomena, and, at the same time, served as entertainment purposes; - Pre-colonial literature showed certain elements that linked the Filipino culture to other Southeast Asian countries (e.g. oral pieces which were performed through a tribal dance have certain similarities to the Malay dance); - This period in Philippine literature history represented the ethos of the people before the arrival of a huge cultural influence – literature as a cultural tradition...
