Many agree with the decision; yet many disagree. Prayer should be allowed in public schools because it is already practiced. It prevents immoral acts, and it enhances the learning environment. The issue of prayer in schools has been debated in the United States since the North West Treaty (1787and 1789) which states: “ Religion, morality, and the knowledge being necessary for good government and the happiness of mankind, schools and the means of learning shall forever be engorged.” Thus, religion, which includes prayer, was...

Ford Pinto

...defective fuel system design led to the debate of many issues, most centering around the use by Ford of a cost-benefit analysis and the ethics surrounding its decision not to upgrade the fuel system based on this analysis. ISSUE Should a risk/benefit analysis be used in situations where a defect in design or manufacturing could lead to death or seriously bodily harm, such as in the Ford Pinto situation? RULE There are arguments both for and against such an analysis. It is an economically efficient method which has been accepted by courts for numerous years, however, juries may not always agree, so companies should take this into account. ANALYSIS Although Ford had access to a new design which would decrease the possibility of the Ford Pinto from exploding, the company chose not to implement the design, which would have cost $11 per car, even though it had done an analysis showing that the new design would result in 180 less deaths. The company defended itself on the grounds that it used the accepted risk/benefit analysis to determine if the monetary costs of making the change were greater than the societal benefit. Based on the numbers Ford used, the cost would have been $137 million versus the $49.5 million price tag put on the deaths, injuries, and car damages, and thus Ford felt justified not implementing the design change. This risk/benefit analysis was created out of the development of product liability, culminating at Judge Learned Hand's BPL formula, where if...

See media help. | "I Have a Dream" is a public speech by American activist Martin Luther King, Jr.. It was delivered by King on August 28, 1963, in which he called for an end to racism in the United States. Delivered to over 250,000 civil rights supporters from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial during the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, the speech was a defining moment of the American Civil Rights Movement.[1] Beginning with a reference to the Emancipation Proclamation, which freed millions of slaves in 1863,[2] King examines that: "one hundred years later, the Negro still is not free".[3] At the end of the speech, King departed from his prepared text for a partly improvised peroration on the theme of "I have a dream", possibly prompted by Mahalia Jackson's cry: "Tell them about the dream, Martin!"[4] In this part of the speech, which most excited the listeners and has now become the most famous, King described his dreams of freedom and equality arising from a land of slavery and hatred.[5] The speech was ranked the top American speech...

Analysis and Decision

...Table of Contents Executive Summary McDonald’s Corporation currently markets its products across its 8 geographic segments through customizing its food items to suit local tastes and preferences. Furthermore, all advertisements are shot in 12 different languages, featuring the customized products catered to each region. However, the company’s international motto, “I’m Lovin’ it”, is not translated. McDonald’s locates all of its franchises in convenience locations such as malls, airports and local neighbourhoods. These marketing strategies have proven to be effective, indicated by the company’s 7% increase in profit margins over the past 4 years. However, McDonald’s has strived to improve them with recent marketing initiatives with respect to the 4Ps. McDonald’s has begun to renovate its eateries, such as going from a plastic look, to a more brick and wood design in an effort to maintain a contemporary image. They have also decided to “re-image” themselves in their ads by incorporating a hip-hop theme with teen icons such as Justin Timberlake as a means to attract teenagers. Additionally, company has begun to offer healthier food products, such as oatmeal, given consumers are more health conscious. In light of McDonald’s recent efforts to improve its marketing strategies, they still face three pressing issues. Firstly, although the company has begun offering healthier food items, they are still high in fat, sugar and salt. This was confirmed in a study performed by Dr...

Nintendo's Strategy for Wii

...of video games. Combining these two strategic approaches propelled the company to become the market leader in sales of the third generation video game consoles, far surpassing Sony’s PlayStation 3 (PS3) and Microsoft’s Xbox 360. Nintendo is currently facing two significant problems: 1. The immediate concern is that the company is unable to meet the demand for the Wii console which continues to sell out in stores. 2. The long term issue that needs to be addressed is whether the company can identify and invest in innovations that would allow Nintendo to continue to expand in the market, while resisting a significant attack from its competition. In order to analyze the issues in detail a SWOT, PESTE, financial, and competitive analysis were performed. The findings indicated that the company differentiates itself from the competition with a high emphasis on product differentiation; it is quite susceptible to competition; and that the release of the Wii console has improved its financial status immensely from a revenue generation standpoint. The alternatives that have been considered are those that address both the short and long term concerns facing the company. They include a contemplation of establishing a pre-order system for consoles, and also putting more emphasis on outsourcing non –core business activities. The decision criteria used to assess the...
