Formal Analysis of Samsung’s “The Next Big Thing Is Already Here” Ad

In Samsung’s latest commercial spot for the Samsung Galaxy S3 it is clear that the iPhone 5 is the elephant in the room. Samsung has long pitched its Galaxy smartphone by highlighting its larger screen and 4G capability, but now they are taking a less conciliatory approach: putting on the gloves and taking their Galaxy S3 toe-to-toe with Apple’s iPhone 5. Samsung is clearly going for the proverbial jugular by taking on the “next big thing” factor that comes along with every Apple product launch. Without skipping a beat, Apple has managed to put out one blockbuster after another, and whether it is the iPod, the iPad, or the iPhone, they have all revolutionized how people interact with technology. Samsung is trying to remind its target audience through their latest ad campaign that Apple has not just conceded their edge in putting out revolutionary products to Samsung, but that all the secrecy and hype surrounding their product launches is growing stale even among their customer base. The commercial starts in Chicago with an Apple fanboy waiting in line at an Apple Store to get an iPhone 5. He then tells the person next to him, “They’re saying that this phone is going to be like a precious jewel!” which elicits oohs and ahs from the people in line around him. The scene then flips to San Francisco, where another Apple fanboy has his mind blown after he hears Apple is going to put the headphone jack on the bottom of the iPhone rather than the top. Next the commercial flips to another Apple Store in New York, where a girl waiting in line says enthusiastically, “I heard the connector was all digital… what does that even mean?” Samsung’s message, buried under a barely disguised veil of sarcasm, is that people lining up to get the iPhones are hardly getting a revolutionary product, but
