...One of Americas most defining moments in history began with a siege on Fort Sumter on April 12th, 1861 in Charleston, South Carolina. When Fort Sumter was attacked by the Confederacy, few realized the implications of what had just happened. It was at this time that America’s most deadly war took place, and the beginning of a new era of freedom for all had begun. Six days after South Carolina declared is secession from the Federal Union, Maj. Anderson (Union) moved the troops under his control to Fort Sumter; in hopes of delaying an attack by the South. Unfortunately for him, Fort Sumter had not yet been completed. Some of the walls were not as tall as they should have been because they had not yet finished being built. Thus, Maj. Anderson...

Fort Sumter Prison In The Civil War

...The Fort Sumter Prison in the Civil War Doing this research paper I have discovered all the awful things that have happened in the prisons during the civil war. I have focused on the Fort Sumter prison near Andersonville, Georgia. Including how awful the conditions where for the prisons, like having no shelter, food, clean water, and not having a large enough space for all the union prisoners. Approximately 674,000 soldiers surrendered or were otherwise captured by both sides over the four year duration of the war. Out of the 674,000 soldiers that were captured, 211,000 where union soldiers and 463,000 where confederate soldiers. Neither side was prepared to deal with the security, public health, or resources that max influx of human beings demanded. It’s didn’t help that they were already stressed. Consequently overcrowded and unsanitary, prison camp facilities resulted in a wide spread disease, starvation, and a lot of death (Patrick Teegarden)....

Abraham Lincoln Research Paper

...Abraham Lincoln Research Paper Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809 close to Hodgenville, Kentucky. His family moved to Indiana in 1816. When Lincoln was ten his mother died from poisoned milk. His father remarried the next year to Sarah Bush Johnston. Abraham liked her very much and even later recalled her "his angel mother. (Encarta)" Abraham had less than one year of formal education during his life. He was self-educated and taught himself how to read and write. When he was not in school, he worked on the frontier farm clearing out forests with his axe. When Abraham Lincoln was 21 he and his family moved to Illinois. There he worked on a farm growing corn. But more importantly here was where he gave his first political speech. In 1830, the same year his family moved to Illinois, he went to a political rally and was convinced to talk for a candidate on his behalf. According to a witness there, Lincoln "was frightened but got warmed up and made the best speech of the day. (Encarta)." Abraham Lincoln's political career started in the spring of 1832 by running for a seat in the Illinois' House of Representatives. However an unusual turn of events happened a month after he announced he was running. The store he was working at went bankrupt and he lost his job. Very shortly thereafter Native Americans rebelled and the governor of Illinois asked for volunteers to help put this down to which Lincoln promptly volunteered for. He never experienced actual combat, but during...

Causes of Civil War

...------------------------------------------------- REsearch Paper By: Asad Rafique July 31, 2014 Professor Russell History 121 July 31, 2014 Professor Russell History 121 Causes Of Civil War Generally, texts have showed that inconsistency between northern and southern financial prudence initiated the Civil War. The industrial revolt in the North, throughout the first few years of the 19th century, resulted into Machine age economy that depend on wage manual worker, not slaves. At the same time, the Southern states continuously to depend on slaves for their agricultural economy and cotton manufacture. South made enormous revenues from cotton, slaves and struggled to sustain them. Northside did not require slaves to maintain their economy so they fought to free abolish slavery as whole from United States. History shows us the agricultural economy was indeed one cause of civil war, but it certainly wasn’t the only cause. Wars are complicated and there causes are not simple understandable. In this research paper we will discuss causes what started the Civil War. A war that separated the nations, ruined harvests, towns, and railroad lines. Many issues embarked the nation into disorder in 1861. Key administrative foundations contain the slow collapse of the Whig Party, the establishment of the Democrat Party and, the 1860’s voting of Abraham Lincoln as president. Religious disagreement to slavery also increased, braced by ministers and protestors such as “William Lloyd Garrison”. Ecological...

Elizabeth Van Lew

...Elizabeth van Lew 9 July 2012 Examining her background, Elizabeth van Lew should have been among her Virginian sisters supporting the Confederate Stars and Bars, mending clothes for the boys in grey, and tending to the wounded of the South. Instead, in Civil War Richmond, the capital of the Confederacy, Miss van Lew came to be one of the most committed spies for the cause of the Union. Her professionalism as an agent of espionage grew as the war waged on, perfecting her skills in tradecraft and deception. Without formal instruction, Miss van Lew became a master handler of both the sources and Federal Agents within her spy ring. Even though Southern authorities noticed indicators of her work, they where never able to stop the line of information she compromised to aid the Union’s struggle to reunite the country. Miss van Lew’s work during the war gave her the courage to raise the first Union flag in Richmond a full hour before General Grant took the city on 3 April 1865. Miss van Lew belonged to a prominent Richmond family. Her family home stood on one of Richmond’s highest hills, Church Hill, and was an impressive three stories tall. The home was located across from the church in which Patrick Henry called for liberty or death. Elizabeth’s father was a wealthy hardware vendor and was known among pre-war Richmond society. Elizabeth attended schooling in her mother’s hometown of Philadelphia. She was tutored and given the best of academic and social training. It...

...groups, many of which survive as intact, sovereign nations. Once a self-governing, self-sufficient people, America Indians were forced to give up their homes and their land, and to subordinate themselves to an alien culture. From the origin of their tribes in the 1500’s to the early nineteenth century, American Indians have experienced oppression. Today, American Indians are more numerous than they have been for several centuries (Andersen & Collins, 2012). Today, Native Americans have a unique relationship with the United States. Since the late 1960’s, political participation has led to an expansion of efforts to teach and preserve Indigenous languages for younger generations and to establish a greater cultural infrastructure. This paper will discuss the specific tribe of the Navajo Indians to create awareness of their history, oppression, and current state in today’s world. The word Navajo comes from the phrase “Tewa Navahu”, meaning highly cultivated lands. The Indians largely reside in New Mexico and Arizona. The Navajo Indians originally began their tribes in the 1500’s. They traded maize, or corn crops, and woven cotton items such as blankets for things such as bison meat, and various materials, which were made for tools and weapons. Homes were known as, “Hogans” and their doors faced the east to be sure the sun would shine in. In 1600’s the Spaniards and Mexicans came into their territory and begun violent actions against the Navajos by raiding on their camps. Eventually...
