I hope your Labor weekend was a pleasant one.

My family background has a lot culture history, which means there is a lot to talk about, but I will concentrate in sharing more of the work history from my father side. In that note I will like to share minimum information regarding my family cultural background. My grand grand parents are from Korea, they immigrated to Europe and make Spain their new home. Grandparents and father are from Madrid Spain, grandparents and mother and from Ecuador.

On the other hand, my father is the youngest of a family of 12 kids. He became an industrial engineer and end up working in underground mining. His job was very dangerous, long days of work and the responsibility was huge. But the paid was very high. The think he liked the most was the option to travel to other places in and outside the country. The job most of the time was tragic and sad for the families of the miners; people will end up dying for many reasons. This job has been one of the longest job he did.

My father salary was good when he started, then with time things change as the economy change, with the years the impact was mostly for newer people in the industry. Because of his position he had all the benefits working for the company. For example: if he wanted to invest stocks in the company, medical and insurance benefits. He was treated good most of the years he got to work for the company, the only think he mention about disliking in the company was the fact that he couldn’t have too much of a social life with people he was in charge at work. The work wasn’t like to work in a office and that you are able to have a more social life to know one another, when your working in a mining, the most important thing of the day is to get the work done and make sure about the security of the workers.

When my father started his job in mining he got his bachelors in industrial engineering at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia know as Barcelona Tech. As most of the engineering careers, he had to always know what was the latest technology and get inform about not only in the technological aspects but also enviromental. While working for the mining company, he got the opportunity to keep going to school and his master as a Geotechnical engineer at the Autonomous University of Madrid. He continues learning to this day.

My father feels bless to have had the opportunity to go to school and been able to travel around the world while working for the mining company, because the impact it make for his life was very valuable, not just for him but for his family. He got the opportunity to know places and people that he will probably wouldn’t had never thought meeting and that help his mind expand more then just think inside the box. As far as having a bad impact in his family, he doesn’t recall having any, because a couple years after he got marry, he end his work at the mining company and started his own business. He defiantly learn a lot while working for the mining company, specially how to value life.

My father said he did had different jobs throw out his teenage years and college years as well that paid him minimum wage. Mostly fixing things like computers, and mechanical problem on televisions and cars. Regarding about either to increase or not a minimum wage, he doesn’t take sides to either one. He believes there are good and bad things in either side. For example, if they will increase wages, some people will have a little more flexibility as far as providing a better living for families, but on the other side this could also increase less motivation, mostly on teenagers that lack motivation and information of the value of pursuing a higher education.

My fathers said that his grandparents will be consider rich, my grandparents will be consider upper middle class back in Spain. He grow up in a big family, which they make sure to had provide him with whatever he need it, specially for his education. He said over and over that his father and grandfather will always make emphasis in education and how important it is in the near future. My father doesn’t care to much about social class, he cares about the kind of person you are towards others. He said that social classes will always be around us but is up to us as people if we want to make such differences. As far as how people get rich I America, his opinion on it is that is a combination of perseverance, hard work, get educated and family. On the other hand as far as what makes people poor, he mentions that poor people unfortunately a lot of them don’t have the advantage to advance or get the help they need it, most poor people will stay like that for the lack of help, not so much because they don’t want to get better.
