According to Dr. Pikay Richardson, cultural diversity is the existence in a community or organization of people from different backgrounds, of race or ethnicity, or different genders, with different beliefs and values, with different expectations and are at different stages in life (Richardson, 2005). There are four main functions of management which are planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. In order to do any type of project, management needs to go through the steps of planning, than organizing, leading, and follow through by controlling the project.
There are seven steps owners can take to have a more effective diverse management strategy. The steps are: define your terms, be realistic, build in metrics, assemble your resources, set a system, educate, and demonstrate CEO support (Kampf, 2011). Since diversity no longer just includes employment equity or affirmative action, it is important to for everyone involved to be aware of what management means by diversity. Respectively there is no one-size-fits-all solution; diversity needs to be defined for each company. Definitions include work styles, languages spoken, or physical and mental capabilities to name a few. Goal setting needs to be kept a realistic, since every company grows at different rates. Metrics are put into place so that the process of diverse management can be measured in specific, quantifiable long- and short- term goals (Kampf, 2011). Making sure such resources as human and fiscal are in place will help an organization with their diversification. Setting up a system to attract the best of the best in the workforce and enabling them to become part of the established culture of your organization is crucial. The four functions of management are planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. The management functions are interdependent of each other and if one function ignores the other functions, management will not be effective. No matter the type of business, a manager’s job is essentially the same across the board but there are four functions of management to consider regardless of the leadership style. In short, those four functions are to plan and implement plans to achieve the organization’s goals, to organize those plans while directing employees in their own roles and ultimately controlling the plan to function as an effective manager. Planning: The manager’s main duty is to determine what the organization’s goals are and what actions to take in order to achieve those goals.
