Foxconn is moving in the right direction

Foxconn is the largest electronics manufacturer in the world. The company has been in the news for the harsh treatment of its employees who live and work in company halls and tolerate long shifts. After a number of suicides in 2010, nets were placed around the buildings to prevent workers from jumping. On a positive note and according to Foxxcon customers, no organization in the world is as capable, flexible and committed to meet large-scale production deadlines and respond to last minute changes. The company’s workers may work too hard, which may cause the problems surrounding the business. Foxconn needs to make improvements with the business in order to prevent these suicides from occurring.
Foxconn has more than a million employees and is growing each and every day. Padilla states, “The Company was previously said to be bringing on 100,000 new employees in June ahead of the iPhone 6 launch (Padilla, 2014).” The company has 13 factories in nine Chinese cities, which is more than any other country. In China, it employs more people than any other company. Recently, Foxconn has been known to have many problems with labor rights in recent news. The working conditions include an average hourly wage from one to two dollars, including overtime. The iPhone and other new products are also a big part of this. Fifty-hour workweeks and twelve-hour shifts are typical at Foxconn, but up to one hundred hour workweeks tend to happen during peak production. Peak production is when a new product comes out such as the IPhone 6 or mini Ipad. Before these products come out in stores, the workers at Foxconn are putting in countless hours a week to make sure the customers are satisfied with the new technology.
Apple and China haven’t had the best relationship but everything is now starting to improve. Foxconn is starting to see improvements and is moving in the right direction. According to New York Times, Apple has recently made significant changes for its workers in China. Also, there are talks of Apple increasing the wages at Foxconn to encourage better results from the workers. Even though China only gets two percent of the profits from apple. While they work harder than anyone else, they are still benefiting greatly from the company. Apple is one of the most popular products in the world and while Foxconn is creating there products and people keep buying them, Foxconn is bringing in lots of revenue. An article from Forbes states that Foxconn brought in 127 billion dollars in sales this past year. The CEO of this company is Terry Gou. His net worth is 5.1 billion dollars and is the third-riches person in Taiwan according to Forbes magazine. These numbers show how valuable this company is to the Chinese economy.
Apples new owner Tim Cook is helping Foxconn move in the right direction. Former owner of Apple, Steve Jobs never made a trip to China to observe his workers. According to Everett Rosenfeld of World Time, Cook has cultivated a better relationship with the country of China than Steve Jobs managed. This shows how much Foxconn really means to him. Now, Tim Cook, the new owner, has made multiple trips to China. By doing this Cook has observed the working conditions and plans to take significant strides in making the company better. While in China, Cook had the chance to interact with the workers and get feedback from them. In an article by Mikey Campbell in 2014 from Apple Insider, Cook explains how the highlight of his trip was to interact with the workers and to see how talented they really are. In the future, Cook plans to reduce hours and increase wages for the workers. According to a worker at Foxconn, “Everyday is like: I get off form work and I got to bed. I get up in the morning, and I go to work. It is my daily routine and I almost feel like an animal.” This worker was forced to work 60-hour weeks after she was promised of benefits and little overtime. The workers point is that they are violating the labor laws in China. According to CNN news, the working conditions are so bad that elderly workers try and convince the new workers to leave Foxconn. In making this comment, elderly workers urge us to open our eyes to what is actually going on in these factories. At one point in 2010, it was so bad that workers threatened mass suicide over a pay dispute but was eventually settled. According to an article by New York Times, details of the agreement were not released but one of the workers said they had been promised additional compensation. Basically, Foxconn won the agreement. In a 2012 CNET article by Lance Whitney, a worker named Chen stated that “Humans are doing machine-like work.” Cook is starting to observe stuff like this now and it making an effort to make an immense change in the way Foxconn is ran.
To resolve the problems Apple and Foxconn came together for a meeting. According to a story by The New York Times, Apple held a critical meeting with Foxconn’s top executives in March to discuss working conditions in the companies Chinese factories. “As a result of those meetings, Foxconn promised to implement a number of “wide-ranging reforms, including reducing workers’ hours and significantly boosting wages. Workers will be getting a 30 % raise (Wong, Liu, Culpan, 2010).” In making this comment, Culpan urges that workers will start to work harder and produce more with this raise. This will increase the quality of the apple products as well. Marsal states, “Other minor changes focused on employee safety and comfort: protective foam on low ceilings in stairwells, automatic shut-off features on machines, and cushioned seats for assembly line workers (Marsal, 2012).” Basically, Marsal indicates that Foxconn will better working environment for the workers. In addition to these changes, nets were place around the building to prevent workers from jumping and have decreased the suicide rates. Tim Cook is also going to decrease hours for the workers and limit overtime hours as well. These changes are very important in improving the conditions at Foxconn and will greatly help them to move forward.
Some skeptics may suggest how Apple is some kind of monster for what it is doing with the Foxconn factories. Others say how it is crucial for their economy and how important it is. Though I concede that Foxconn is violating many labor laws and is therefore being considered a monster, I still insist that it is making an immense effort to make a change. After the tragic incidents where many workers were committing suicide in 2010, Foxconn really took control of the situation and has reduced the suicide rates by putting up nets. The suicide rate at Foxconn is actually lower than China’s rate as a whole. The numbers of suicides stand out at Foxconn due to the amount of workers they have. Without Foxconn, the Chinese economy would suffer severely.
Although it isn’t the best working conditions, Foxconn is an important part of the Chinese economy and has come along way. It creates lots of jobs and generates lots of revenue for their economy. The changes in Foxconn have been very beneficial to the workers and the whole company itself. Foxconn is moving in the right direction under Tim Cook as it continues to improve each and every day. Also, Tim Cook is making an obvious effort to do so by visiting Foxconn as much as he can. By doing this he is building relationships with the workers and showing them how much he cares about them and the company. As a result, Foxconn has seen more productivity in its workers and has prevented many suicides from occurring.

It also provides an account on the social and political origins of the advent of monopoly capital in China through a detailed study of Foxconn production expansion. As a legend of capital expansion in manufacturing industry, Foxconn is important and typical of its speed and its scale in the process of capital accumulation on all regions of China. We attempt to look at this miracle of capital by understanding the enigma of global capital, the nature of the transformative state, and the Chinese growth model that results in rapid capital expansion but precarious working conditions of workers. At stake, we argue that under the global competition context a strong political regime with a divided nature and the making of an unfinished working class contributed to the advent of monopoly capital and the tragedy of working lives.
