Throughout history, artists have often broken the times’ current style, and put forth something fresh and innovative. This transition into a new style is frequently seen in the work of architects. A dramatic architectural shift in style occurred not only during the Baroque period of art, but also in more modern of times. This shift is evident in the work of both Francesco Borromini and Frank Gehry, two world-renowned and brilliant architects. Specifically, this extreme break in style is evident in Borromini’s façade of San Carlo alle Quattro Fontane and Gehry’s Walt Disney Concert Hall. The shift in style of artwork during the Baroque period was not only dramatic, but also fascinating. The change in style during this time was particularly set off the current religious commotion. This was quite a heavy difference from the work of the Renaissance in which “artists reveled in the precise, orderly rationality of classical models” (AP Gardner’s Art Through the Ages). One of these artists was Francesco Borromini, who constructed a facade of San Carlo alle Quattro Fontane. This facade broke entirely with the way in which previous ones had been constructed. Borromini fully discarded the flat frontispiece of a church and sought to create something much more dynamic- something Baroque. Borromini’s facade wholly encapsulates the ideals of the Baroque period and its unique architecture, as it correlates perfectly with the essence of this new artistic style. His facade is dramatic and heavily ornamented, and breaks entirely with the appearance…show more content… Gehry is often noted for distinctiveness of his works which do not parallel previous times’ work. His work is frequently cited as deconstructivism, which was a sure break with earlier art. This kind of architecture is “an approach to building design that attempts to view architecture in bits and pieces” (Craven). Gehry’s individuality as an artist is evident in all of his constructions, including the Walt Disney Concert Hall. This building is entirely unique and displays Gehry’s wish to break from this time period’s typical style, similarly to how Borromini created something innovative and dramatic during his own time. This exceptional building contains “curves and intricate structural patterns [which] are matched by no other concert hall in the united states” (AIA). Through this building, Gehry successfully constructed something so different and encapsulating that many viewers are often at a loss for words while viewing it. Just as he did in this work, Gehry is often noted for his use of “warped forms in his designs” (AIA). Gehry rejected modern architectural ideals when creating this building, and made sure that his work was nothing less than extraordinary. Also in order to add to the individuality of the building, Gehry worked to make the interior as spectacular as the exterior. In order to do this, Gehry collaborated with Yasuhisa Toyota, who
