Frederick Sanger was born August 13, 1918 in Rendcomb, Gloucestershire, England. At nine years old, Frederick went to a school which was run by Quakers called the Downs School and at age fourteen he went to a school in Dorset called Bryanston. In 1936, he went to St. Johns College in Cambridge as an undergraduate to get his Bachelor of Arts degree in natural sciences. His first course classes were physics, chemistry, biochemistry, and mathematics which took three years to fully understand and biochemistry for his second course class. In October 1940, Frederick Sanger began to study PHD (Doctor of Philosophy) under the influence of N.W. “Bill” Pirie who was a British biochemist and virologist. Frederick was to investigate whether edible protein could be obtained from grass and when Pirie left and Albert Neuberger became his advisor, he decided to research on the study of metabolism of lysine. In 1951, he was a member of the Medical Research Council and when the Laboratory of Molecular Biology opened in 1962, he moved from his old lab to this new one, which he became head of the Protein Chemistry division. In 1975, he published a procedure with Alan Coulson using DNA polymerase with radiolabeled nucleotides that was called the “Plus and Minus”. In 1977, Sanger and some of his colleagues established the “Sanger method” which is also the “dideoxy” chain termination for sequencing DNA molecules which allowed long stretches of DNA to be sequenced faster and accurately.
