Guidelines for Freshmen Nutrition
College students are concerned about maintaining and consuming their proper weight and nutrition. It is difficult to intake good nutrients while living at the dorm because the cafeteria offers mainly junk food. If you are living in the residential area you are forced to have a meal plan; you have no other options than to eat what the University is offering you. Consequently, many students suffer from a phenomenon called the “freshman 15” in which students gain 15 pounds during their first year in college. The freshman fifteen can be avoided by providing incoming students with knowledge of how to make food selections in the cafeteria, the importance of balanced nutrients, and healthy eating habits …show more content…
Students can easily overeat more than they need, which is one of the factors that causes Freshmen 15. Too much weight gain, especially in a short period of time, can lead to serious diseases. The common diet related death is heart disease (Atherosclerosis), cancers, and stoke. The study of Tuft Longitudinal Health center showed that 60% (of students) eat too much artery- clogging saturated fat (Hellmich, 2002). This can result in Atherosclerosis. Most misbelieve that it is the school’s fault for providing unhealthy meals. However, College/University are required by state to offer all nutrients food, such as salad bar and fruits. It is up to students to choose their option wisely. Students can also go to Myplate.gov to learn more about healthy diets (Sizer & Whitney, 2013, p.47). Myplate.gov is a great tool to support diet-planning goal; not will it help students maintain their weight but it will also provide them with proper proportion of food they should be eating. This can help prevent students for building up chronic diseases. While students are overeating they are still not receiving enough nutrients needed …show more content…
Examples of bad eating habits are snacking, stress eating, intake excess amount of caffeine, or late night food runs. Freshmen love to snack when they study or when they are bored. Snacking on chips or popcorn will only make they gain unwanted weight; it does not have any health benefits and they can also exceed their calories. To fix this, students should give themselves study breaks for snack if they are hungry, it will help stabilize their blood sugar (Janeway, p.4). Students should also try to avoid stress eating. When freshmen are stressed or in a bad mood they tend to choose what is called “comfort food.” Studies find that students who were stressed consumed more soda and junk food than non-stressed students who reported more fruits and vegetables in their diet (Hudd, Dumlao, Erudmann-Sager, Murray, Phan, and Soukas, (2000). Stress eating leads to overeating and weight gains. Other habits that most freshmen have is consuming too much caffeine. According to Gary Eugence McIlvain studies, “more than 78% consumed above the recommended 200mg of caffeine per day” (McIlvain , 2008). College Freshmen are consuming more caffeine than their body needs. There are many beverages that contain caffeine such as soda, coffee, energy drink, and tea. Exceeding the limits can lead to insomnia, stomach disorders, or even fatigue. The beverages also have too much sugar added which can result in some
