...concept. However, this year, my writing has improved greatly. I am not a five star writer, but i am reaching to better skills now, rather than where i was at the beginning of my freshman year. With the practice and building up my skills, i have improved in certain areas ad a writer. throughout this year, i have improved on the idea of properly analyzing evidence. For the book club unit towards the beginning of the year, I read the book The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time, which told the story of Christopher, a boy with autism. The essay focused on the idea of how Christopher had locus of control. The evidence worked for the point I was...

...The Journal of Psychology, 2011, 145(3), 229–245 Copyright C 2011 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC Are Math Readiness and Personality Predictive of First-Year Retention in Engineering? LAURIE MOSES CATHY HALL KARL WUENSCH KAREN DE URQUIDI PAUL KAUFFMANN WILLIAM SWART STEVE DUNCAN GENE DIXON East Carolina University ABSTRACT. On the basis of J. G. Borkowski, L. K. Chan, and N. Muthukrishna’s model of academic success (2000), the present authors hypothesized that freshman retention in an engineering program would be related to not only basic aptitude but also affective factors. Participants were 129 college freshmen with engineering as their stated major. Aptitude was measured by SAT verbal and math scores, high school grade-point average (GPA), and an assessment of calculus readiness. Affective factors were assessed by the NEO–Five Factor Inventory (FFI; P. I. Costa & R. R. McCrae, 2007), and the Nowicki–Duke Locus of Control (LOC) scale (S. Nowicki & M. Duke, 1974). A binary logistic regression analysis found that calculus readiness and high school GPA were predictive of retention. Scores on the Neuroticism and Openness subscales from the NEO-FFI and LOC were correlated with retention status, but Openness was the only affective factor with a significant unique effect in the binary logistic regression. Results of the study lend modest support to Borkowski’s model. Keywords: calculus readiness, college retention, engineering students, Five Factor Model, Locus of Control, STEM fields ...

...Interpersonal Communication Analysis Paper: Liar Liar The relationship that I chose to analyze for my interpersonal communication paper is the one regarding my ex-boyfriend Stephen and myself. It was the summer before freshman year when I met Stephen; I can remember my friend, Valentina, introducing him to me on that hot summer night after an all-star softball game. We began to date when the school year started in the fall and continued to date for three years. Stephen was a year ahead of me so at the time we broke up it was his freshman year of college and my senior year of high school. The reason that I think that Stephen and I broke up was that we were in different places in our lives and wanted time for ourselves. When we broke up, I soon found out the truth about the three years that I spent with Stephen. With the knowledge that I know now and five communication concepts, I will analyze...

...As my junior year winds down, the final chapter of my book is about to unravel: senior year. However, before I start exploring my horizons, which is going to be filled with new opportunities and memories to be made, it’s best to reflect on my experience in AP Language and Composition with Mrs.Miles throughout junior year. These past 8 months were filled with enlightening experiences. From the discussions and articles of the week to the countless essays we had to write. I believe that Mrs.Miles really focused on our writing skills, which I am awfully grateful that she did. Mrs.Miles has assisted in my growth in writing; as my grammar has improved, including the use of commas, colons, and semicolons. In fact, I am now knowledgeable of the fact...

...Chapter 2 REVIEW OF RELATED STUDIES AND LITERATURE This chapter presents the related literature and other related studies which bear significance to the present study. These are necessary in the analysis and interpretation of data found in this study. Related Literature Different researchers have conducted research to ascertain the influence of social media on users; Moon, (2011) in a study on “impact of Facebook on undergraduate academic performance”, averred that social media have negative impact on students. According to the result, the more students use Facebook, the more it affects their academic performance. Oye, (2012) notes that most of the younger students use social networking sites mainly for socializing activities, rather than for academic purpose. Oye (2012) further observed that most of the students do feel that social networking sites have more positive impact on their academic performance. In another study conducted by Shana, (2012) it was revealed that students use social network mainly for making friends and chatting. The result showed that only 26 percent of the students indicated that they use social media for academic purpose. Young, (2006) in a study titled “The effect of internet use and social capital on the academic performance of students” observed that the internet expands its reach to teenagers’ school life. Young noted that students are more reliant on the internet to access information that is involved in school life as...

...The first paper was my least favorite, since I have never liked literary analysis papers; however, the second paper was in the category of papers I love the most- research papers since they give the chance for melding new ideas of an interesting topic with current ideas, and when paper two came around, I was excited to start it. Though I was faced with the difficulty of finding enough evidence to support my thesis out of the short story, I got a lot of enjoyment of writing the paper. Perhaps my favorite paper I have written to date would be the third paper, which abled me to pick two unique texts that may seem like they have no similarities at first, but it ended up being much more interesting than any other text. This might be a result of passion- wanting to do something unlike the rest of the class, while also seeing...

...The assignment is to write an analysis of the erdely essay on binge drinking among young people. In your crritique discuss the writing techniques that erdely uses to make her illustration essay convincing. Use this analysis as a springboard to address the issue of drinking in our culture and the often tragic results of drinking irresponsibly. Share personal views, as well as experiences and/or obervations related to the issue. Think of targeted audience for your essay as well as your purpose for writing. Below is the essay that we are to do the analysis of: Binge Drinking, A campus Killer by Sabrina Rubin Pregame tailgating parties, post-exams celebrations and Friday happy hours-not to mention fraternity and sorority mixers-have long been a cornerstone of the collegiate experience. But on campuses across American, these indulgences have a more alarming side. For some of today’s college students, binge drinking as become the norm. This past February I headed to the University of Wisconsin-Madison, rated the No. 2 party school in the nation by the college guide Princeton Review, to see the party scene for myself. On Thursday night the weekend was already getting started. At a raucous off-campus gathering, 20-year-old Tracy Meddler struggled to down her beer as fist-pumping onlookers yelled. "Chug! Chug! Chug!" In the kitchen, sophomore Jeremy Budda drained his tenth beer, "I get real wasted on weekends," he explained. Nearby a 19-year-old estimated. "I’ll end up having 17,18 beers...

...generation at its core of iniquity. However, a recent study on the “hookup culture,” demonstrated that the chief change in sexual habits for Generation Y is not the amount of sex contemporary college students are having, but the context in which they are choosing to have sex (Monto and Carey 2014). According to this 2014 study, college students are increasingly feeling less obligated to have sex within committed, monogamous relationships, and instead, are more likely to engage in casual intercourse. This change in sexual behavior among contemporary young adults is consistent with cultural shifts in the scripts surrounding modern romance and sexuality. While research continues to confirm the liberalization of sexual activity in the past fifty years, scholars continue to debate the conception of the hookup culture, as well as the varying and often harmful effects associated with its existence. Contemporary Romance and Sexuality As the feminist movement developed in the 1960s, women began challenging their prescribed role in the political sphere, the workplace, and in their personal lives. The reshaping of intimate relationships between romantic and sexual partners simultaneously occurred at this time. Fewer couples married at younger ages, while other forms of sexual intimacy (i.e. sexual relations outside of marriage) became more common. The “sexual revolution” of the 1960s, specifically, spurred a large incidence of sexual experiences among never-married females in the U.S....

...Factors Affecting College Students’ Motivation A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of requirements for the College of Arts and Sciences Major in Psychology By Imelda Tolentino Josan Alejandra Valle Charize Faith Laciste Mirriam Calimlim Arellano University-Pasig September, 2013 Chapter I Introduction Studying is said to be the primary key to achieve academic excellence, but what factors really driven students to study? Others might say that fears motivate students while others might claim that you should give them tough classes and they will pull through. Some teaching faculty would say that students are motivated because of their personal goals in life. Yes, you could ask everyone but they would just answer in different opinions. The disagreement about the sources of student motivation makes the question of academic motivation sound a great deal like that of workplace motivation. Management theory abounds with contradictory theories about what makes employees work. Maslow (1968) argued that needs drive behaviour, and that workplace (and, presumably, academic) motivation is determined by the level of the needs hierarchy at which the individual is operating. McClelland (1966) claimed instead that motivation is driven by an innate need to achieve, and Herzberg (1959) proposed that the content of the jobs themselves was the source of the elusive employee motivation. The purpose of this research was to align explanations for student motivation with classical workplace...

...non-prescription medication is involved. In fact, at least 50% of students were offered a drug by their sophomore year (Daniels-Witt et al.). While another study points out that 50% of students surveyed believed that stimulants were “easy to get on campus” (Weyandt et al). This poses the question as to why do students easily have access to these substances? One of the main contributors are students themselves who either purchase these drugs or are offered them by their peers (Weyandt et al 289). The above statistics simply mean that students face these external peer pressures regularly and the gateway into this abusive behavior is highly likely. As a result, policy makers in higher education need to develop ongoing analysis and reports on their own university’s scope of drugs. Through this process, there will be a better understanding of where the substances come from and then policy makers can discuss these situations in specific. In turn, if the temptation is less widely available, I believe that students should be less likely to succumb to the college party-like...

...Study Based on Analysis of Existing Study Methodist College English 201 When writing compositions revision is an extremely important part of the process. Revision strategies can help by providing different approaches in terms of spelling and proofreading. Research has shown that people learn and absorb information differently. It is highly probable that when someone writes any type of composition they could benefit from using different revision strategies. In 2011, TEFLL Department, Faculty of Foreign Languages published a research study written by Professors Mojgan Rashtchi and Mojdeh Ghandi titled “Writing Revision Strategies: Do they Enhance Writing Ability”. The purpose of Professor Rashtchi and Professor Ghandi study was to investigate whether three types of revision strategies peer revision, self-revision enforced by checklist revision as compared to teacher revision have any significant impact on the writing ability of Iranian EFL (English as Foreign Language) learners. (Rashtchi & Ghandi, 2011) They want to impart that revising is an important part of the writing process and that using different revision strategies help produce better written compositions, communication and critical thinking skills. There are copious flaws with this study in their documented methods, results and analysis. Methods Participants Participants were selected from a sample of eighty Iranian male and female students between the ages of 19-24. All participants were majoring in...
