...to use the Boatwright library website. In public school I was not taught the importance of scholarly work nor how to find it. The only time I was assigned a major research project was in my senior year of high school. I went to one of the specialty schools in the Richmond Public Schools system. Two of the requirements for graduation was the freshman paper and the senior thesis. Looking back, I remember how hard I was struggling in completing my freshmen paper. It was about the effects of the pollution in the Chesapeake Bay. The 10 page paper required extensive research with 350 flashcards, 3 drafts, and a class trip to the Chesapeake Bay at the end of...

Although ‘language learning’ is considered less important than language acquisition, most of what is learned has been coming from the formal teaching in school. It is also said that the acquisition of grammatical structures follows a ‘natural order’ which is predictable. For a given language, some grammatical structures tend to be acquired early while others late. It can be derived that language learning could also be predictable and that grammatical structures...

It is utterly important to get the meaning of what we are reading otherwise it would be meaningless. It will be like staring at words without knowing what it is about. Reading without comprehension is also like listening to a person talking to you without understanding what he or she actually wants to convey”, Riley Johnson (2010). Reading is indispensable and one of the most important aspects of learning. It is also one of the most essential parts in student’s life. It is necessary to determine the possible problems that the students are facing in relation to their comprehension skills in reading, to come up with the most appropriate strategies in reading suitable for the leaner’s ability to understand the text. ...Abuse Prevention Programs: Operation, Funding, and Effectiveness. Candace Taylor Grand Canyon University Author Note All correspondence to this research should be forwarded to Candace Taylor. Substance abuse has become a serious issue in America. More and more of America’s youth are starting to use drugs than usual. To prevent this, there are many substance abuse prevention programs that are in place to try and prevent this before it even begins. Three programs were examined for this research paper. Those programs are DARE, Partnership for Drug-Free Kids, and SADD. In this paper, the mission, funding and effectiveness of each program will be discussed. DARE DARE, Drug Abuse Resistance Education, is a program created to bring awareness of drug abuse with youth in communities. The mission of this program is to teach kids how to make the right decisions and live a drug free, healthy life. “D.A.R.E. is the national symbol for the Drug Abuse Resistance Education program which, in partnership with police officers, parents and schools is in use throughout the United States.”(DARE.org). The DARE program is funded by federal government resources and private contributors. A few studies were conducted on the effectiveness of this program. Dr. Ismail Sahin conducted an effective DARE program. “This study has showed that while some research studies found a positive effect of the DARE program, some studies found no significant impact at all” (Sahin 2014). There were several reason in...

...How many of you are under 21 and drink? I’ve heard that college is supposed to be the best four years of your life—we have classes that assign heavy workloads, work-study during the week, on the weekends we get to let loose and “turn up”, and that we will meet some of the best people here, along with finding out who we really are. Some of us think college is like what movies portray them; everybody’s drinking, smoking, and partying, with very little studying and barely any homework. The realities of college don’t set in until students encounter the coursework that presumably consume their time. Until then, college students tend to have more fun than they usually would back home because of the lack of parental supervision. During the first few weeks of college, students, especially freshmen, are at the highest risk of alcohol-related harm. With the pressures of classes and social acceptance, freshmen feel more anxious about making their way into the college life. "We see a spike then because anxiety is high, and the rigors of coursework haven't yet taken hold” (Cleveland). The drinking problem starts with the way college is portrayed—as a life that revolves around alcohol. Freshmen come in expecting it to be that way, so behave that way, the excessive drinking and reckless behavior are all mirrored from movies and media. According to national surveys conducted by Harvard School of Public Health, 44 percent of all college students binge drink and many suffer alcohol-induced...

...FACTORS OF CAREER CHOICES AS DETERMINED BY EXTERNAL MILIEUS A Micro Research Paper Arabia, Lord Mark Anthony M. Villones, Wilson C. ED 4 Educational Research and Evaluation Masilang, Judy Marcia M. 22 March 2012 THE RESEARCH PROBLEM Career choice is an ongoing process, needs in-depth study, and requires much thought as it a decision that affects your future. As you learn new things you get an understanding of what you are interested in, what you would enjoy doing and what will be one of the best paying options. Career planning is a never-ending process as you gain experiences, grow, and improve. You need to give it a thought (Koonar, 2009). And there would always be a time that students will definitely begin to discern their future career. When the students reached this point, they now start to solicit ideas of what course to be selected as an embodiment of their future career. However, though most of them solicit ideas from the people who are learned in a particular discerning situation, they usually end up selecting their own choices (Polistico, 2009). When they fail to choose what their hearts desire, then would most likely shift course and end up the college level doubling the time intended for the particular course. The purpose of the study is to determine if career choice is really determined by the external milieus to which the students used to live. Furthermore, it seeks primarily to explore the extent of how these external factors could predict students’...

...Factors in Student Motivation Authored by: Steven C. Howey Educators across the country are frustrated with the challenge of how to motivate the ever increasing number of freshmen students entering college who are psychologically, socially, and academically unprepared for the demands of college life. Such students often exhibit maladaptive behavior such as tardiness, hostility towards authority, and unrealistic aspirations. The standard approach is to address the problem as an academic issue through remedial or developmental instruction. Developmental education programs however do not address the whole problem. Lack of motivation is not limited to the academically weak student. Successful remedial and study strategies courses aimed at the underprepared student have demonstrated that students who really want to improve their skills can do so when motivated. However, even the best remedial instruction programs have failed to positively impact the student who is both underprepared academically and unmotivated. When students have both a lack of academic skills and lack motivation, the greater problem is motivation (Kelly, 1988). Faculty often have neither the time or inclination to address difficult motivational issues in the classroom, consequently, the task of trying to effectively motivate such students often falls to academic advisors. Opinions about the role of motivation in academic achievement and what can be done about it vary widely among college faculty, administrators...

...Converting Ideas to Third Person for College Level Writing by Professor Adri-anne Jones In most instances, college freshmen enter college knowing how to write their ideas in first person, I and second person, you but have had little if any experience with third person writing. Therefore, many first-year college students are not prepared to write the typical academic essay and research paper. For the most part, the purpose of writing in the academic environment is to inform, to report, and to persuade. Therefore, the writing style is expected to be formal since students will be engaged in writing research papers, essays, book reports, critiques, proposals, and responses to literary writings. In these formal and academic writing situations—in most cases—the focus is on the subject and not the writer. Therefore, it is crucial that college freshmen learn to master third person writing before they complete their course requirements for freshman composition. Even though argument and persuasive writing is based on the writer’s personal opinion or position on an issue, the writer’s opinion is most often presented in third person. Rather than to write I think . . . or I believe . . . or I feel . . ., the writer should simply state his or her opinion without making a first person reference. For example, the academic writer should avoid such statements like I feel that the restoration of prayer in public schools could likely remedy the lack of discipline in classrooms...

To increase sales, you should • Train all salesclerks to be more helpful, friendly, and courteous to the customers. • Target sales to fraternity members and freshmen. • Run ads in The Daily Illini on Fridays stressing the style and quality of Redwood and Ross's products and stating the store hours and campus location. • Advertise special sales so that price-conscious students will go into the store and become familiar with the products and store qualities. If Redwood and Ross continues its present promotional activities and fits the new advertising strategy into the program, awareness will increase, which will lead to greater sales in the long run. Below are different studies that would relate and provide support to this thesis paper. Optimism is an individual difference variable that reflects the extent to which people hold generalized favorable expectancies for their future. Higher levels of optimism have been related prospectively to better subjective well-being in times of adversity or difficulty (i.e., controlling for previous well-being). Consistent with such findings, optimism has been linked to higher levels of engagement coping and lower levels of avoidance, or disengagement, coping. An investigation into the relationship between student-reported optimism and year in...
