Bissinger, the author of Friday Night Lights, juxtaposes different aspects of athletes lives in Permian to expose the negative impacts of football in Odessa. Throughout the telling of Friday Night Lights Bissinger uses imagery to portray the glory of the football season at Permian high school. In the football stadium “stillness was ruptured by a thousand different sounds smashing into each other in wonderful chaos”(14) and fans lost “all dignity and restraint...because of these high school boys in front of them, their boys, their heroes”(14). These idolized players walk the halls with hordes of admirers following close by. The boys are praised during Friday morning pep rallies and coddled by their personal pepette, who tends to all their needs. As Bissinger depicts these boys within the classroom he uses the same tone of esteem.However, the information conveyed to the readers seems inappropriate for bragging. His satirical description of the education the boys are receiving shines a new light on the condition of Odessa. Don Billingsley, a football player “had scored a superb 99 on the fill-in-the-blank worksheet on cakes and frosting”(146) in his food science class. However, in English his greatest accomplishment was the “discovery that if he angled his chair in a certain way...the teacher could not see him fall asleep”(146-147). Education was not nearly as important as football within Odessa. Some teachers were filled with disdain to see a generation of kids who “weren’t obnoxious...good...or bad..[but] deaded to themselves and to the world around them”(145).Even a “wonderfully articulate student”(147) envied the glorious limelight shined upon the football players, despite them lack other important attributes in
