Friendships Addresses Basic Human Instincts
Friendships develop in many different ways in our lives. In Sunset Boulevard and Cinema Paradiso, friendships evolve through a love affair with the movies. In both these films, the main characters have a love affair with the movies. Norma Desmond surrounds herself with people who validate her belief in her ability to make it big once again in the newly popular talking pictures. Salvatore Cascio (Toto) befriends a projectionist who fulfills his need for his lost father, while nurturing his love for film. The friendships that develop in these two films show that movies or at least images from movies can impact our personality and personality development by addressing our basic human instincts to protect ourselves from loneliness, false hope, and the fear of ageing.
Friends are an important part of our lives and without friendships our lives could become a very lonely place. In Sunset Boulevard, Norma’s favorite pet monkey has just passed away, which was Norma’s only friend at the time. Into the world of Norma Desmond, comes Joe Gillis. He was a young handsome, down on his luck screenwriter, who hasn’t had any work in months and is flat broke. Desperate he accepts Norma’s offer to write an atrocious script she has been nursing for years as her starring comeback vehicle. Joe knows the script is a joke, but he takes on the project anyway. Besides working on Norma’s script, he also ends up becoming her kept companion. For awhile this is fine as Joe plays along, knowing he can relax in financial security. Norma and Joe’s relationship is one of convenience with Norma getting the satisfaction of coddling a younger man. Since she has the ability to support him and to buy him luxurious gifts, in some way Norma is controlling Joe’s life by her supporting him financially. He

Friendships

...Friends are very important in our lives. Friendships are easily formed when we are young and do not demand too much out of it. According to studies and research, humans tend to form highest number of friendships at kindergarten and primary level. However, one tends to have less friends as one grows older and wiser. This is because we realize there are good friends and bad ones. The saying that a friend in need is a friend indeed is very apt in this scenario because good friends are those who are reliable and trustworthy. at a younger age, our demands are not too high regarding friendships as we rely mostly on our parents, siblings and relatives for important things. The friends we formed at this age are merely considered playmates rather than companions and confidants. Thus, our expectations of them are not high. More serious friendships are formed when one enters puberty and achieves certain level of maturity. the latter allows one to forge fellowship with those who share the same interests, passion as well as similar moral and religious values. Thus, it is not surprising to observe that in some Asian country, mature students at the upper secondary level have friends of the same ethnic and religious backgrounds. At the university level, it is even more apparent. Even the Ministry of education has voiced concern over this phenomenon where polarization is prominent. The Indians, Chinese and Malays hardly mix with each other and are seen usually in the company of their own...

Friendship

...I just hate it that today is one of those days when I don’t have nothing to do, so the only thing left in the table is read, and since I can’t do that the other only thing I can do is write. Today I felt like writing about friendship, the real friendship, so here goes nothing: I never ever got the true meaning of friendship, until I started losing it in some way. It isn’t that I lost it completely; it’s just that my friends and I have grown apart and that kind of sucks. But before that I always wondered what friendship really is and what it really means. And now being in a different school and not with the same friends and growing apart with my friends, I asked myself that question again and I think that maybe I have found the real answer. Being in a new place with new people, new faces it is hard to fit in. And this especially when the others know each other already. So you have to start everything from the beginning , you start to tell everyone your story, your favorite things and the reasons why you like them, but they still don’t get it, they still don’t get the reason why you are who you are, and they want to change you. And then is when you start to change, because you think you aren’t good enough and that maybe that is the reason why you don’t fit in. And you change everything from yourself, and by doing this changes you start to lose your real friends, you start to lose a little bit of yourself every day, you are not the same old you, the one with big strange dreams...

Friendship

...are in need of the friendship and company of others at all times of their lives from birth until death. The inherent social nature of human beings make them obliged to live in society with the company of people and to avail themselves of the assistance and support of friends. Thus a dear friend is one who never leaves you alone or feeling helpless in this world, because they are there for you under any circumstance, regardless of the sacrifices required. Imam Ali (AS) considers true friends to be a great asset in this world as well as in the Hereafter and says: “Procure friends for yourselves from amongst your brethren-in-faith because they are a great asset in this world as well as in the next world”. In another remark, he considered sincere friends to be as good as the most important part of the human body and says: “One who loses a noble-hearted friend who befriended him for the sake of Allah is like one who loses one of the main organs of his body”. An essential point on friendship is that it is only valuable when it is for the sake of Allah, and the only companion who is reliable, is the one whose friendship is based on taking you nearer to Allah (SWT). As opposed to friendships which are based on things that are finite, such as seeking to fulfil ephemeral pleasures, obtaining wealth, position or beauty. Hence, it is vital to keep in mind that these transient things that will eventually depart from you, will never equate to an everlasting friendship. The danger ensuing...

...alive. A couple should be best of friends for a successful marriage. Husband and wife should understand each other the way true friends understand each other. They should have love and understanding, trust and respect for each other. Thus, before getting married one should give importance to the degree of friendship a couple holds. As said by Nicolas Sparks in the novel “The Notebook”- “You are my best friend as well as my lover, and I do not know which side of you I enjoy the most. I treasure each side, just as I have treasured our life together.” Many songs and stories have been written on the importance of friendship. Friendship

...As everyone knows, friendship is one of the most important things in our lives. Sometimes we cannot live without friends. According to relationship, we have to make friendship with good friends to get benefits. On other hand, we have to be optimistic although we have some bad friends in our lives and we have no idea about them. However, I can divide my friends into three groups: honest friends, successful friends, and motivated friends. The purpose for the classification depends on my society. My honest friends are always with me whatever happens to me or wherever I am, and that makes them honest friends. In addition, they always say the truth and help me when I need help. Therefore, I spend a lot of time with them more than anyone else. One other thing I love in my honest friends is they always ask me about my health, my education, and all other things. For instance, "A good friend can tell you what is the matter with you in a minute. He may not seem such a good friend after telling". By Arthur Brisbane, The Book of Today. In my view, friends should be honest to each other, no matter how hurtful things can be. Second group of my friends is successful friends group. Actually, they almost do good things. They study hard and try to save their own time. I hope I spend a lot of time with them to learn new and useful things. Furthermore, they always advice me and convince me to do useful things. Friendship

...Friendship is a relationship of mutual affection between two or more people. Friendship is a stronger form of interpersonal bond than an association. Friendship has been studied in academic fields such as sociology, social psychology, anthropology, and philosophy. Various academic theories of friendship have been proposed, including social exchange theory, equity theory, relational dialectics, and attachment styles. A World Happiness Database study found that people with close friendships are happier. Although there are many forms of friendship, some of which may vary from place to place, certain characteristics are present in many types of friendship. Such characteristics include affection, sympathy, empathy, honesty, altruism, mutual understanding and compassion, enjoyment of each other's company, trust, and the ability to be oneself, express one's feelings, and make mistakes without fear of judgment from the friend. While there is no practical limit on what types of people can form a friendship, friends tend to share common backgrounds, occupations, or interests, and have similar demographics. THE DEVELOPMENT STAGES OF FRIENDSHIP Developmental Psychology In the typical sequence of an individual's emotional development, friendships come after parental bonding and before pair bonding. In the intervening period between the end of early childhood and the onset of full adulthood, friendships are often the most important relationships in the emotional life of the adolescent, and...

Friendship

...Friendship Friendships are the gift to the man kind. The relations which we get in this world are blood related. But the only relationship which does not related to blood is friendship. Friendship has many forms and shapes. It is like water. If we pour the water into a jug it takes the shape of jug. if you pour the same water into a bowl it takes the shape of bowl. Same way friendships will take a different shapes and sizes according to our heart. Friendship gives pleasure to human beings. Where there is friendship then there will not be any sorrow. When you see a child laughing you will forget your sorrows for a second, same way when you are with a friend you forget your sorrows. Friendship, like the immortality of the soul, is too good to be believed. The lover, beholding his maiden, half knows that she is not verily that which he worships; and in the golden hour of friendship, we are surprised with shades of suspicion and unbelief. We doubt that we bestow on our hero the virtues in which he shines, and afterwards worship the form to which we have ascribed this divine inhabitation. In strictness, the soul does not respect men as it respects itself. In strict science all persons underlie the same condition of an infinite remoteness. Shall we fear to cool our love by mining for the metaphysical foundation of this Elysian temple? Shall I not be as real as the things I see? If I am, I shall not fear to know them for what they are. Their essence is not less beautiful than their...

...True Friendship Studied to this day, Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics is one of the most interesting pieces of literature I have come across. The text offers Aristotle’s views on a variety of topics including what a human being is comprised of, not in terms of physiology, but rather what differentiates us from animals for example. Most importantly, and the parts that I focused on for this assignment were the areas where Aristotle defines the various types of friendships, and the parts where Aristotle discusses moral virtue and how one can go about acquiring them. In this paper I will review Aristotle’s moral virtues in relation to the term philia, and evaluate why self-control is the most significant of the virtues required in a true friendship. Before diving in, it is first important to dissect the term philia as used by Aristotle in Nicomachean Ethics. The term philia encompasses a variety of relationships types including the relationships between: business contacts, parent and child, soldiers on the same army, the best of friends, and even the relationship to one’s significant other. Though today we would not necessarily consider all of these relationships to be friendships, the term philia did incorporate them. For the purpose of this paper, the term philia, or friendship, is about the relationship between the truest of friends. Within the scope of friendship overall, Aristotle distinguishes between three objects of philia: utility, pleasure, and good. The friendship...

Friendship

...Friendship Friendship in the English dictionary means” the state of being a friend; association as friends, a friendly relation or intimacy.” We all have friends, but how many of them are considered true friendship? Friendship is not just having a lot of friends. It is like having a family member. Friendship in my dictionary is my childhood friend who I grew up with when we were in kindergarten, a friend who is a part of my family who my mom knows who. To establish a healthy strong friendship, there are basic aspects that relationship should be built on, which are trust, honesty and loyalty. Trust in friendship means you have the ability and confide in your friend and be positive about the consequences. Trusting a person means you believe that person will be wise and won’t tell anyone what you told him or her, and when they give you advice you can trust him or her. Trust means that the person would never hurt you. We all need someone with whom we can share our thoughts, feelings, and frustrations, sharing our deepest secrets without worrying that those secrets will end up reveal to others. In true friendship, there is no backbiting, no negative thought, no turning away. From my personal experience with trust, I wasn’t doing great in school so, I needed a person who listens and I can trust not worrying being my personal feelings will reveal. Honesty is the second base in true friendship. Honesty is a prerequisite to the true friends' relationship...
