Function: Minimize Heat Gain
Organism common name (Genus species):

Summary of strategy/mechanism in your own words (short description, 150-200 words maximum, no quotes. This is a simple statement of how the function is achieved and a more detailed description of how the strategy works, providing enough detail for a designer or engineer to understand specific characteristics of how the mechanism works. Include any important context considerations, i.e. scale, abiotic criteria and ranges, etc.): Selective absorption and reflection of specific bands of near infrared radiation is accomplished by structures in frog skin. Specifically, differing slightly by species, and sometimes greatly by Genus, structures …show more content…
callidryas, L. infrafrenata, P. dacnicolor, P. sauvagii and R. malabaricus) in each case exhibited a low reflectance over the visible wavelengths (400- 700nm) with a small increase at the green wave lengths, but then a pronounced increase in reflectance over the near infrared wavelengths (700- 1000nm) (Figs. 1 and 2). In contrast, the non-near infrared reflecting frogs (H. cinerea, 0. septentri onalis and P. leucomystax) had overall greater reflectances in the visible wavelengths but did not exhibit a pronounced increase in reflectance at the visible near infrared boundary. In all cases, the non-near infrared reflecting frogs had lower reflectances in the 700-1000 nm waveband. The flatness of the reflectance response in the non-near infrared reflecting frogs contrasted greatly to that of the near infrared reflecting frogs. In all cases, there was greater similarity in the reflectance spectra of distantly or unrelated near infrared reflecting frog species than there was in the reflectance spectra of those frogs and con-familial non-near infrared reflecting frogs (Fig.

Dear Doctor--Here is one of the most carefully hewn stones in the second course of the foundation of a literary edifice which I have slowly and laboriously constructed. I wish to inscribe your name upon it, as much to thank the man whose science once saved me as to honor the friend of my daily life. De Balzac. THE LILY OF THE VALLEY ENVOI Felix de Vandenesse to Madame la Comtesse Natalie de Manerville: whom we ignore their I yield to your wishes. It is the privilege of the women love more than they love us to make the men who love them the ordinary rules of common-sense. To smooth the frown upon brow, to soften the pout upon their lips, what obstacles we miraculously overcome! We shed our blood, we risk our future! exact the history of my past life; here it is. But remember in obeying you I crush under foot a reluctance Why are you jealous of the sudden reveries midst of our happiness? Why show the when silence grasps me? Are there secrets in your heart which seek absolution through a knowledge of mine? Ah! Natalie,...
