...Scientist Research: Fritz Haber Fritz Haber was born on December 9, 1868, in Prussia. His family is German Jewish and he was taught his early education in a gym where his father worked at the time. Haber was influenced by his father's job as an importer of natural dyes and pigments. Haber was a German physical chemist who won the 1918 Nobel Prize for his successful work on nitrogen fixation. Haber finally earned his doctorate after transitioning from school to school, he created the Haber-Bosch process which combined nitrogen and hydrogen to form ammonia, and he supervised the German poison gas program during World War I. At the University of Berlin, in 1886, Haber began his study of chemistry. After transferring to many different colleges and even spending a year in the military, he earned his doctorate from the University of Berlin in 1891. He earned this while working at the college with Liebermann on organic compounds. Haber was given the position of an assistant in the Department of Chemical and Fuel Technology at the Fridericiana Technische Hochschule. During his work as an...

...Fritz Haber was born on December 9, 1868 in Breslau, Silesia, present day Wroclaw, Poland. His mother died giving birth to him and he did not have a very good relationship with his father that carried on later in life. Fritz and his father, a Jewish importer, had many arguments over his father's beliefs and profession against his son's beliefs. Fritz Haber received his primary education through a free program at a local gym. His secondary education was at St. Elizabeth Classical School. As he entered college at the University of Berlin in 1886, he began to study organic chemistry and the practical application of it. Soon however, he found a passion for industrial applications of chemistry. Around this time, he also converted to Protestant Christianity, not...

Question 2b (204 words – w/o in-text citations) In medicinal chemistry the term ‘allosteric’ usually refers to a particular group of enzymes called allosteric enzymes. This enzyme genre has a number of sub-units in its quaternary structure. A characteristic of allosteric enzymes is that each sub-unit has a specific binding site of its own (Haber et al., 2013). Thus, an allosteric enzyme is capable of binding to a single or multiple proteins. When they bind to their substrate, the conformation of the enzyme will alter between an inactive state and active state (Haber et al., 2013). The term ‘allosteric’ is used differently in this review. It describes how an allosteric pocket forms. Protein kinases have an activation-loop located adjacent to the ATP-binding site. The loop holds residues (Asp-Phe-Gly) enclosed in a DFG-motif. The motif is directly coupled...

...Contextual Outline Humans have always exploited their natural environment for all their needs including food, clothing and shelter. As the cultural development of humans continued, they looked for a greater variety of materials to cater for their needs. The twentieth century saw an explosion in both the use of traditional materials and in the research for development of a wider range of materials to satisfy technological developments. Added to this was a reduction in availability of the traditional resources to supply the increasing world population. Chemists and chemical engineers continue to play a pivotal role in the search for new sources of traditional materials such as those from the petrochemical industry. As the fossil organic reserves dwindle, new sources of the organic chemicals presently used have to be found. In addition, chemists are continually searching for compounds to be used in the design and production of new materials to replace those that have been deemed no longer satisfactory for needs. This module increases students’ understanding of the implications of chemistry for society and the environment and the current issues, research and developments in chemistry. 1.1 Construct word and balanced formulae equations of all chemical reactions as they are encountered in this module: • Acid reactions: o acid (aq) + base (aq) salt (aq) + water (l) o acid (aq) + active metal (s) salt (aq) + hydrogen (g) o acid (aq) + metal carbonate (s) salt (aq) + water (l) + carbon...

...185 EQUILIBRIUM 185 UNIT 7 EQUILIBRIUM After studying this unit you will be able to • identify dynamic nature of equilibrium involved in physical and chemical processes; • state the law of equilibrium; • explain characteristics of equilibria involved in physical and chemical processes; • write expressions for equilibrium constants; • establish a relationship between Kp and K c ; • explain various factors that affect the equilibrium state of a reaction; • classify substances as acids or bases according to Arrhenius, Bronsted-Lowry and Lewis concepts; • classify acids and bases as weak or strong in terms of their ionization constants; • explain the dependence of degree of ionization on concentration of the electrolyte and that of the common ion; • describe pH scale for representing hydrogen ion concentration; • explain ionisation of water and its duel role as acid and base; • describe ionic product (Kw ) and pKw for water; • appreciate use of buffer solutions; • calculate solubility product constant. Chemical equilibria are important in numerous biological and environmental processes. For example, equilibria involving O2 molecules and the protein hemoglobin play a crucial role in the transport and delivery of O2 from our lungs to our muscles. Similar equilibria involving CO molecules and hemoglobin account for the toxicity of CO. When a liquid evaporates in a closed container, molecules with relatively higher kinetic energy escape the liquid surface into the vapour...
