The word ego is often misinterpreted to have a negative connotation but for Prometheus having ego is a sacred opportunity. In Anthem by Ayn Rand Prometheus discovers his individuality in a strictly collectivist society by becoming a creator to his own idea of society/culture/civilization that embraces the selfishness and ego found in people. To Prometheus, being an egoist is to positively pursue the ideas he believes are right for society, for himself and his happiness. Being an egoist is something different to every person whether they use it in a positive or negative way. Living for himself is one way Prometheus is an egoist as well as his selfish qualities of believing he is somewhat superior to others and being curious about his capabilities and pursuing the actions that make him happy, learning. Having ego simply means to know and be proud of the known potential. In Prometheus’s eyes ego was originally a sin but he comes to realize that ego is “The word which can never die… and the meaning and the glory ” (Rand 105). Unlike Prometheus, ego is often embraced incorrectly making someone usually an arrogant, negatively selfish person who would never think to contribute their innovations to humanity for the benefit of mankind. Though the exact opposite can be said about Prometheus for he lives for the day when he will share his creations with the World Council. Along with selfish contributes to his ego Prometheus is driven by his desire for freedom. Without this motive Prometheus would have never become a creator to his own nature resulting in him never discovering the word
