Getting the Full Reno Experience
At one time, Reno was the gambling capital of the United States. Then, in the 1950s, Las Vegas boomed and took over the gambling and casino industry, leaving Reno in the dust. Most people think of Reno as a dingy and grimy town in the middle of the desert filled with neon lights and tacky casinos. While that may have been an accurate description of Reno at one time, the city has undergone a massive revitalization in recent decades to restore it to the beautiful and flourishing desert oasis that it is today. People used to come for Keno, slots, and quickie divorces, but now they flock to Reno for exploring, shopping, dining, and culture.

If you're closer to midtown, grab a fresh-brewed coffee from Hub Coffee Roasters before starting your day.
Forget typical fast food when you're in Reno. While you're sure to find your fair share of In-N-Out, McDonald's, and Burger King, go for something different at Süp with their unique array of soups, sandwiches, and salads, or grab a slice at Blue Moon Gourmet. Artown — a downtown district focused on the arts — features numerous festivals all throughout the year. No matter when you visit Reno, you are sure to come across a special even in Artown. In fact, in the summer alone, more than 500 events take place and over 350,000 people visit.
One of the most interesting arts festivals in the entire country takes place just a couple of hours outside of Reno: Burning Man. This week-long art event is not for the faint of heart. It takes place in a temporary, man made city at the end of August/beginning of September each year. It features music, dancing, and other performances throughout the week before ending with the burning of a giant wooden man. At the end of the event, everyone disperses and the entire city vanishes without a trace until the next

The most recent census states the population to be 90,264. It is a sister city to Reno, NV, being right next door. The community relies on much of its revenue from the gaming industry. Many of the families are transient and move from city to city in search of higher paying wages. This effects the lives of the students that attend school. Often the students at Case High School may move several times in a year and so they are not at school for an extended period of time. This effects their ability to make and keep lasting friendships as well as their ability to gain and retain information learned in school. The instability of many students’ lives interrupt their learning experience. This interruption in the learning experience can be exasperated or diminished by staff members at the...

Hilton Hotel

...CASE 2 Hilton Hotels Hilton Hotels Corporation owns, manages and/or franchises hotels, casino-hotels and inns; sells furnishings, equipment, and supplies to hotels, motels, and inns; and operates a computerized reservation system for the hotel industry. After two major takeover attempts in the early 1990s, Hilton Hotels decided that it had to change by becoming a more aggressive business operation. The result was the decision to move heavily into gambling. This change of strategic direction represented a significant shift in Hilton’s business focus and marketing objectives. Already the owner of four casinos in Nevada, the Los Angeles hotelier began pushing projects in New Orleans, Chicago, Egypt, Turkey, Uruguay, and Australia. While gaming accounted for about 34 percent of Hilton’s overall sales in the early 1990s, its four casinos contributed nearly two–thirds of Hilton’s operating earnings. Nevertheless, Hilton’s new emphasis on gambling carried a large element of risk. Competition for the gaming dollar is intense, and the degree of investment needed to be successful is high. Hilton has had to put more than $6 million into renovating the Las Vegas Hilton to keep up with such rivals as the Mirage and the Excalibur, and it has also renovated the Flamingo Hilton to keep pace with other new places. To lure high rollers away from other casinos, the Las Vegas Hilton has had to be more generous about extending credit, resulting in bad gaming debts and reductions in operating income...

The Motivation of Fred Maiorino

...In July of 1991, Fred Maiorino lost his job as a sales representative for Schering-Plough after several years as a top salesperson. After a lengthy court case and trial, Fred won a lawsuit in the state of New Jersey for age discrimination and was awarded $8.44 million in 1994. Whether or not Fred’s age was the reason Maiorino was actually a factor is beyond the scope of this paper or the information on hand. The jury that sat for the trial certainly has more details and first-hand accounts of the issues; the jury decided in favor of Maiorino and, with a little faith in our justice system, I will accept their decision. After a review related to motivation, I discuss the actions Schering-Plough took to motivate Fred and the way feedback and age affect job satisfaction and job performance. Motivation Methods of motivating employees is much discussed in management journals. From Herzberg’s KITA (kick-in-the-ass) method (2003) to need- based motivation to reinforcement theory, this issue has raised many questions about what kind of motivation works for companies. In my research, I found that one of the most important things for managers to keep in mind when trying to motivate an employee is that every employee is different and will react differently to the various techniques available (Duening & Ivancevich, 2006; Kolstrup, 2012; Milbourne & Francis, 1980; Deal, Stawiski, Graves, Gentry, Weber & Ruderman, 2013). A lack of absenteeism, putting forth best effort, always...

Living in Dell Time

...QUESTIONS 1. Identify and describe all the different types or forms of innovation exemplified in this article by explaining with data and facts from this case. Product Innovation (the development of an improved product) Dell is the only computer company which offers its customers the built-to-order model. The customers can choose which components they want to have in their computer and can adapt it to their needs. Process Innovation (the development of a new manufacturing process) Dell has brought a maniacal focus to shaving minutes off the time to assemble and ship a computer. By studying videotapes of "the build," as they call it, factory managers have slashed in half the number of times a computer is touched by workers. They've counted the screws in a PC and redesigned it so that the major components simply snap in place. The entire process, from the time the order is taken to when the finished PC exits the factory, is wrapped up in four to eight hours. Organizational Innovation (a new internal communication; introduction of a new accounting procedure) Dell has a very good communication. As they standing under so much pressure regarding to the fact that they have no inventory, they have to have this skill. There is even a round-the-clock communication with the parts makers overseas existing, which helped them to handle with the lockout in 2002. Without this communication they had never managed it through it. With the built-to-order principle Dell has also...

Expectations of Development in Early Adolescene

...Expectation of Development in Early Adolescence Amy Whalen Carrington College, Reno Expectation of Development in Early Adolescence Bone fractures are a common occurrence during the childhood years. Children are vulnerable to injury because of the daily activities they perform, the risks they take, and the rate of growth. This can impact the growth and development both physiologically and psychologically for the child. Adolescents can view this type of injury as an impact on their social development and can see their recovery as a slow process that is robbing them of their time with their peers. Although it is crucial to focus on the healing process physiologically for an adolescent, it is also important to ensure the teen is developing appropriately through the psychological stages of life. The developmental stages introduced by Erikson, Freud, Piaget, and Kohlberg help to determine a child’s path into adulthood.
