MGT/330 Theory, Practice, and Application

Abstract

The following describes the four main functions of management and how they are used in everyday life within an organization. Each function uses a level of logic and practical application in order to meet and sustain the expectations of the company. If a business does not use these functions then it will lose productivity and in turn suffer losses of money.

Businesses all across the globe use the “core four” functions of management. These four functions are planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. Each one has a different need for a different purpose in order to achieve maximum results. Planning is what set sets the layout for the day to day operations. Without a plan, nothing will get done. Many different attributes come into effective planning. In the warehousing and distribution field of Ryder Logistics, operations are planned daily. At the start of every shift, a plan must be developed by projecting volume based on productivity and attendance levels. This is where a calculation is formed by taking the daily rate for each individual and multiplying that number by how many employees are present. The total will be the volume production plan. This will help managing the budgets and capacities for the company. Managers must also come up with a plan to organize. Organizing is very critical in any company. Everything has a place and everything should be in its place. At most distribution centers and manufacturing facilities they use an organizing technique which is commonly referred to as “5S.” This methodology translates to Sort, Straighten, Shine, Standardize, and Sustain.
