Functions of management, there are four functions of management; planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. I will also explain how each of these relates to my place of business. Management is defined as the process of working with people and resources to accomplish organizational goals (Bateman & Snell, 2009). By utilizing the different functions of management companies can work with their employees and other resources to reach their organizations goals. Planning can be seen as the organizations map used to track out a way to achieve their goals. The beginning of the planning process should include analyzing what my organization calls the Common Operating Picture (COP) or current situation. From this information the company will determine their goals and outline the steps that are needed to take in order to ensure that the goals will be met. Planning activities that are completed determine the company’s objectives and where they want to be in the future. This helps them to choose their business objectives and strategies. As well, the company needs to look at the resources they have available and determine if they are sufficient enough to achieve the businesses goals.

This tends to lead to organization. Organizing is done through coordinating and financial, human, physical, informational and other resources need to achieve the goals. (Bateman & Snell, 2004) Recruiting the right person for the position is a large part of organizing. Human Resources are an important role. The business organization needs to attract the people necessary to properly staff the organization and meet the goals that are planned by the management. The employees in an organization most often are considered to be the most valuable asset of the organization.
