Functions of Management Managers work with people and resources to attain goals. Good managers attain goals while using resources effectively. Management consists of four functions; planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. The example organization used to link the four function of management is Advanced Oilfield Services, Incorporated (AOSI). This company is a service provider in the natural gas industry. With this new industry, most companies must set goals and follow the functions to achieve them.
Planning
According to the Encyclopedia of Management, planning is the function of management that involves setting goals and establishing a method to achieve the goals. Planning is a process and entails many stages. Recently, AOSI performed an environmental scan of the natural gas industry. The forecast for the future shows that customers will want a way to prove that everyone involved in the field has proper training. AOSI set goals to ensure employees have the proper training and to create an employee identification badge for proof. AOSI reviewed many methods with the best involving an excel spreadsheet to track the training and an employee badge computer program. Management implemented these methods and lead appropriate personnel for success. Management controls this plan by checking the spreadsheet after every training class to verify receipt of proper training. The customer is aware of the methods and can ask an employee for the identification badge at any time.
Organizing
Bateman and Snell define the organizing function of management as “assembling and coordinating human, financial, physical, informational, and other resources” as needed to reach a goal. AOSI reviewed the training needed to comply with the customers and regulations for the natural gas
