Functions of Management

The four functions of management are, planning, organizing, leading, and Controlling (Bateman and Snell, 2009). These are fundamental functions of management.

Management is the process of working with individuals in a coherent manner in

order to reach company objectives and goals.

Planning is where goals are set. At this level strategies are determined, as well as

the approaches to be taken to meet the organizations goals. Managers look at what they

have, then envision where they want to be, and how to get there.

Organizing is where the overall resources will be gathered to reach decided goals.

This includes manpower, technical information, and finances. A cohesive work

environmental is established at this level. At this level of management, assembling and

coordination functions are the main focus of management. The organizing level is where

flexibility, and adaptability is very important due to the probability of unscheduled

changes in management responsibilities.

Leading is having the ability to motivate employees, and a good leader must

possess good communication skills. Leaders that lead by example are usually the best

motivators and get the most out of their subordinates. Leading by example gives

management the opportunity to set standards and have a direct positive impact on

attitudes in the workplace. Leading to me is the most important function of management

due to the direct interaction with subordinates,

Controlling is where the managers of the organization insures standards are being

maintained. Efficiency in job performance and material usage is well observed at this

level. One of the most important aspects of control is monitoring.
