I work in a market/deli store; working in this type of place it’s usually busy around lunch time which is around eleven to twelve noon. Usually at this time employees will have the right to go on bathroom breaks, smoke breaks, we could be on our cell phones, basically do anything we wanted to do if the store wasn’t busy. Some employees would work through the busy rush not taking a break unless really needed, but others took advantage of the situation and went on two or more breaks within that hour and would even be on their cell phones even if the line was backed up, which caused the customers to complain. The owner of the business called all employees to a meeting to discuss the situation, the owner let the employees come up with suggestions to prevent those particular problems from happening again. This situation was effective because with the employees giving ideas to the problems they were causing solved the problems more quickly than having the owner make the suggestions for the employees and also with the employees taking part in the decision making this made the employees feel more involved in the business which made us work harder for the business to be more successful, also with the employees taking part in the decision making made the owner focus more on the employees work labor than he probably would have if he had come up with the suggestions to solve the problems that the employees were having. The suggestions were: employees’ breaks were not to be taken between eleven and twelve noon, all employees should be at their specific post for that particular hour, employees that have to go on a smoke break should go two at a time and the break should only last for fifteen minutes. The owner came up with the solution to not letting employees use their cell phones during work hours because it was still causing a major distraction in the employees work labor, which I think was effective because ever since that rule was taken into effect employees focus more on their work without having a cell phone as a distraction. With the new rules being taken into effect the store has made more money during that hour and customers’ complaints have gotten positive.
