...said he didn’t really prepare for this stand up as much as he should have. He seems to be pretty creative so it makes sense that he might feel that he doesn’t need to prepare since he can bullshit the entire thing. Another thing that he does is he makes this stand up take in a very small venue. I feel that he wants to make the whole situation more intimate than other comedians normally do. He also didn’t make fun of the audience as many comedians do. This is usually an easy tactic used by the comedian to break the ice, but he seems to stray away from that tactic in this stand up. He also took a risk talking about the emotional topic regarding the ‘fatty marc’ baseball game. It’s hard to talk about topics like this because you never know if the audience will take it the same way each time. Plus, personal stories don’t always come off as funny to the audience unless you make them feel like they were there and included in the actual story. He makes himself vulnerable by performing in such an intimate location. He’s on a small stage in front of a small crowd. He also makes himself vulnerable by taking these specific risks that I talked about in the previous paragraph. He talks about specific stories in his life that make himself vulnerable because the audience can take his story however they want. They might not see the story the same way that Mark does. At the beginning before he goes on stage he seems to be rather nervous for this performance. I don’t know if it’s because he...

...and I am a huge movie buff. I have always seen racist and sexist acts and jokes but never really thought of the impact on society they had. Sure, from a stand-up perspective, I thought that people just realized it was a joke and somewhat true. In movies I thought that most people realized that it was just a movie and a movie is scripted and staged. I now know, that as stupid as those jokes and scenes can be, they actually contribute to a large portion of the social inequality that occurs every day all over the world. So my main goal over all of my journal entries was to do as much as I can to not watch any movies or stand-up comics that played on the idea of racism or stereotypes. It was honestly easier than I expected to do. I have not watched any movies that play on these stereotypes. I was having a movie night with friends. They wanted to watch the movie “12 Years a Slave.” It won a few Academy Awards. I suggested that we shouldn’t watch it because it plays on the typical stereotypes that white men have the most control in society white black people usually take the role of some sort of domestic work I movies. They then asked me, quoting here, “Joe, you love movies. This is a great movie. Who cares what the subject matter is. Why are you telling us this?” I then went on to say that I had to do a paper about what I do that contributes to social inequality in this world. I then went on to describe what I do that contributes to the social inequality. I contribute by watching and...

...(urbandictionary.com). Tupac did not meet his biological father, Billy (William) Garland, until after he was shot five times on November 30, 1994, in New York City. Tupac would eventually incorporate the “thug life” persona in his life which would lead Tupac on a downward spiral of misfortunes. Mikal Gilmore, in Rolling Stones article characterizes Tupac as “perhaps the most despised man in America.” Gilmore goes on to describe the late rapper’s music as being merciless and condemned by some of Americas most powerful people (Glimore102-104). Tupac would eventually end up in jail for sexual assault which would not be his last brush with the law. Between Tupac’s vision of what the concrete symbolizes and what was instilled in him from a mother and step father that were members of the Black Panther’s movement, Tupac would eventually battle an inner demon that would ultimately lead to his death. Tupac, in his poem, writes “Proving nature’s law wrong it learned to walk without feet” this can used as a mirror image of Tupac’s success. Tupac success was his gift and his curse, while on one hand he used his determination to make a better life for himself...

...The soft beeps of my alarm clock bring me out of my slumber almost immediately, causing a slight jolt to erupt from my body as I sit up in bed. With my eyes half closed, my arm juts out and fumbles with the various objects on my end table until it finally hits that sweet spot on the small, yet loud, box keeping me from sleeping any longer. A light groan escapes my lips, followed by a quick yawn. Sundays are always considered to be the worst, in my own subjective opinion. I stretch my arms out of either side of my body as my legs swing to the right and off of my bed. I give my legs a moment to relax, my hands finding themselves by my hips before finally pushing me off of the bed and onto my feet. As per usual, I trudge out of my room and into...

...of the problem. There are many reasons why kids get bullied. Some kids get bullied because of their appearance, and other's get bullied because of their social status. ‘Treat others the way you want to be treated.’ That’s the Golden Rule and it should be followed in every aspect of your life. If someone was in a position to stop you from being bullied and did nothing, how would you feel? If you find that unacceptable, you must do everything you can to stop others from hurting people. It doesn't take much to stand up for someone who may be weak, someone who is afraid to stick up for themselves because they know it will only make things worse. It could put a smile on someone's face by letting them know that you're on their side, that they have done nothing wrong to deserve to get treated the way they do and that they deserve to be nothing but happy. Most people aren't aware of how much pain these victims feel everyday. They go to school knowing they're going to be hurt and they see no way out. When victims see no way of escaping from getting bullied, they often choose to do something as tragic as ending their own life. Suicide is the second leading cause of death for people ages 10-24. No one, no matter what age they may be, deserves to ever think that attempting suicide is okay. No one should feel like they have to end their lives in order for all their pain to go away. Suicide only makes things worse and bullying shouldn't lead someone to wanting to kill...

...People tell white lies so they don’t hurt other people. Oscar Wilde uses satire in many different forms in the play called The Importance of Being Earnest. The one that is going to be explained in this essay is lies. Lying can become a second nature for some people. Oscar wilde makes fun of people for telling the truth and saying that they should lie. Lying is being untruthful to make yourself to look better. The two main people that lie in this play are Jack and Algernon and they lie over little things. They both lie to the girls they like and say that their names were Ernest “I have always pretended to have a younger brother of the name Ernest , who lives in Albany and gets into the most dreadful scrapes” (Jack Act 1). ...Jody Lund Owner of the Coffee Shop Can you talk a little about yourself and how you ended up opening this shop? Well I grew up local here in Northeast. I went to school at MCAD and received a degree in photography. Obviously that is not a super marketable skill, so after I graduated I decided to open a small gift with my sister shop on Johnson, it was actually just North of here about two blocks. This is where I first fell in love with small business ownership. I just loved the freedom and creativity that it provided. I was able to things my way. It was very similar to art in that way. We owned the gift shop for ten years, and while we enjoyed it, we were just unable to cover our expenses. Near the time we were closing down shop, this building was going up for sale. It was actually being run as a coffee shop. The woman who had been running it was moving to Arizona. We had a lot of good ideas for the shop, so we decided to buy it from her. Did small business run in your family? No, it’s funny that you ask that. My sister and I always laugh about the fact that we ended up going into small business. No, my father worked as a carpenter and my mother was a nurse. Nobody in our family ever owned or ran a business before us. However, I have always had a passion for supporting small business. I think the world needs more entrepreneurs. We bring a lot of variety y to the market place. How did you Form you business? We are formed as an LLC. This was the best...

...In our society we have a number of norms that we abide by. For example, there is an unwritten rule of how one should behave in an elevator. It is “proper” to face front, stand away from strangers, and not to look at others. When a social norm is broken people may respond with alarm, humor, fear, irritation, or an array of other emotions. When you think of a norm, you are probably thinking about simply being normal. But in psychology terms, norm means a standard or representative value for a group. A social norm is some sort of an expectation that our society has that is deemed normal by that society; they tell us which behaviors, thoughts, or feelings are appropriate within a given group within a given context. Over the past week I was required to conduct a social experiment where I had to perform social deviance, or break socially established norms, then observe my society to see how they reacted to my “misconduct.” The experiment that I conducted was an example of informal deviance, where no one punished me and there was no risk of any punishment. It involved me riding a walled elevator (not one of those elevators that have all-glass walls) at Towson Mall in Towson Maryland multiple times, but riding it backwards, or, backwards as our current society would have it deemed. I had a friend with me that helped me monitor the reactions of eight different experiment groups and got various reactions where people confronted me about my lack of normality. This contradicted my hypothesis...

...Hitch Plot summary Alex "Hitch" Hitchens (Will Smith) is a professional "date doctor", or consultant as Hitch terms himself, who coaches other men in the art of having the perfect date with the woman of their dreams. While coaching one of his clients, Albert Brennaman (Kevin James), who is smitten with celebrity Allegra Cole (Amber Valletta), Hitch finds himself falling for Sara Melas (Eva Mendes), a gossip columnist who is determined to unmask and ruin the so-called date doctor after one of his "clients" (with whom Hitch refused to work) had a one-night stand with her best friend. However, where Albert and Allegra's relationship continues to progress, Hitch finds that none of his tried and tested methods are working on himself, despite being a master of the art. After Hitch is unmasked, he and Sara break up, and Allegra and Albert follow suit. Finally, Hitch confronts Allegra and convinces her to reunite with Albert, before reconciling with Sara. In the process, he makes the startling discovery that he doesn't really do anything significant, and that most of his customers (particularly Albert) really were successful by just being themselves. In the end, Albert and Allegra get married and celebrate their marriage with Hitch and Sara, who are also back together again. Hitch, reflecting on love's unpredictability, addresses the audience in the last line, "Basic principles... There are none." ...with business/money/wall street these days. Lets change that. It needs to be funny. That’s the number one rule. If something is funny it breaks people in and it softens them up, People are more apt to chance their perception because you make them laugh and then they by nature become less judgmental, at least for that moment. That will be one of the themes with this EP- promoting non-judgment, On the part of everyone. I feel that here at cambridge for instance, there is too much judgement ingrained in the community regarding business and finance. There is judgment about social welfare. One is good one is bad. Most of our class is studying finance, and from who I have met so far, most of our class come from good families, have a sense of values, and have very VERY warm hearts and open minds. They are good people, They are creative thinkers, they are funny, they are multidimensional. They want to learn from you. They wanted to leave their country and meet people from other cultures. They want to KNOW about other cultures, they want to share their passions and interests and couple that with learning about yours. We are intellectually curious. We are open to discussion about virtually anything. We all respect each other. Everyone is so nice, so friendly so warm. I feel that I have already learned a LOT about who I am. I am EXTREMELY intellectually curious. I didn’t realize how much so until I got to Cambridge. Cambridge is an environment that prompts you to think...

... they ran away from their job in Weed because the stupid, innocent Lennie touched a ladie’s dress (because Lennie likes soft things). Lennie and George have a shared dream: having their own farm, where they can keep all kinds of animals, and can live from their harvest when they have saved enough money. When they on their way to a ranch, hoping to find work, they sleep in the clearing (a place near a river) for one night. The next day they come to the bunkhouse and they get a job. Soon they meet the other workers on the ranch, including Curley, the son of the boss. Curley is mean, aggressive and a lightweight-boxer. Because he is so small he doesn’t like big guys, he feels threatened by them. So an aggressive look and a rude attitude is his first reaction when he sees big Lennie. The next day when Curley comes into the room, Lennie is attacked by Curley. But strong Lennie defends himself and crushes (accidentally) the hand of Curley, because he tried to stop him. When Curley goes to the doctor, he said that his hand was trapped in a machine. He said this because he is known as a “strong” man and he didn’t want to look stupid and weak. One day Lennie sits in the barn playing with one of the puppies. Of course he kills it, unintentionally, because he pet the puppy to hard. A little while later, Curley’s wife comes in. Lennie remembered the thing...

...little things in life that can make all the difference. Last weekend, I witnessed an act of gratitude that got me thinking about how we treat each other—how one simple thing can change the course of someone’s day. I was in downtown Los Angeles stopped at a red light, when I spotted two soldiers crossing the street toward the bus stop. There was a homeless man sitting on the other side of the street, who promptly stood up, took off his hat, and offered his hand to the two soldiers as they walked by. It was a small, but meaningful gesture. He had nothing to give but his genuine appreciation. But you know what? That was enough. It’s not about extravagance or gifts; it’s about compassion. It’s about our sensitivity to the human condition. Alright, now that I’m done talking like a politician (I couldn’t help it), here are some simple ways YOU can make someone else’s day: 1. Let someone go ahead of you in line. . . . . . especially if you’re up to your ears in groceries, and the person behind you only has cheese. 2. Ask and answer: How are you? It’s a question we hear over and over again—at the cash register, at work with your colleagues— but try providing a genuine answer. And while you’re at it, ask how that person’s day is going, too. When you open up, chances are, others will join you. 3. Say hello. It may sound simple, but saying hello is an acknowledgement of another person’s existence. And let’s be honest, it feels nice to be acknowledged. So say hello...

...Different Types of Paragraph Descriptive paragraph: A descriptive paragraph has sentences that work together to present a single, clear picture (description) of a person, a place, a thing, an event, or an idea. Descriptive paragraphs let the reader touch, taste, see, hear and smell what you are describing. The reader should feel as if they can see what you are describing clearly. You want to paint a picture as you write the descriptive paragraph. Samples of descriptive paragraphs: Sample 1 My friend, Andrew, is really weird. First of all, he is only twenty four years old, but he dresses as if he is living in 1950, instead of 2009. He combs his hair completely slicked back, and his clothes are always too small for him, but he seems to never notice. His teeth are also never clean, and his breath is horrible. He thinks he is cool, but he repulses women. One day he tried flirting with a girl, and she ran from him. In addition, he eats the weirdest foods. For example, the other day, he brought over a hardboiled egg and mixed it with peanut butter. Andrew also has the loudest and most embarrassing laugh, and he laughs at things that no one else thinks is funny. For instance, one day he told a joke that no one found funny, but he started laughing at his own joke and loud, which made other people turn around. Furthermore, he has the most ridiculous accent; he was born in America, and his parents were born in America, and none of his relatives have accents. In addition, he likes...
