Funny Boy

...Shyam Selvadurairs Funny Boy Analysis English Literature Essay Identity involves recognition of the self. It is not static, but it constantly changes in relation to political, cultural and social events that are occurring. A child's identity is negotiable. Children are presumed innocent and naïve until they have experienced life. Their sense of identity has not been determined if they have not had experiences in which they are able to determine their relationship to and how it affects them. In narrating or privileging a child's perspective in a novel, the language the reader is presented with is simplistic and the viewpoint of the narrator is often minimalistic as it is based upon the experiences which the narrator has encountered. Shyam Selvadurair's Funny Boy is narrated from an adolescent’s perspective, where the presumed innocence and naivety of the child offers an alternative view to the political, cultural, social and historical tensions in India and Sri Lanka and the effect that it has on the developing child in terms of identity. The child narrator in each text is an outsider as they do not merge with the cultural norms imposed upon by society. Arjie, the product of an upper-class Tamil family in Funny Boy, crosses borders in his awakening as a homosexual, falling in love with a Sinhalese, despite his parents attempt to create a masculine identity for him, in order that he may abide by the boundaries and social order that has been imposed upon him. The need to understand...

Sondheim's a Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum

...Sondheim’s A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum When I think of musical comedy, Stephen Sondheim’s A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum is the first show that comes to mind. Just three years ago, I had never heard of Forum before, until my high school choir director announced that it would be our 2008 musical. I was hesitant to audition at first, not knowing the plot or what I was getting myself into, but now I can honestly say that it was my favorite musical production ever to be a part of. Forum, a musical farce written in two acts and Sondheim’s first work on Broadway both as composer and lyricist, is “a non-stop laugh-fest in which a crafty slave (Pseudolus) struggles to win the hand of a beautiful but slow-witted courtesan (Philia) for his young master (Hero), in exchange for freedom” (MTI 1). In Sondheim’s own words, “there’s not a wasted moment in Forum, and the truth and the test of it is that the play is just as funny when performed by a group of high school students as it is when it is performed on Broadway. It is never not funny. The reason is, it is based on situations so solid that you cannot not laugh” (Gordon 25). A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum is a collaboration between American librettist Burt Shevelove, playwright Larry Gelbart, and musical theater extraordinaire, Stephen Sondheim. Originally, Shevelove had done a version of a Roman comedy in college and thought that a professional Broadway production would be very...

Breaking this category down further, the company has chosen to target the traditional fast food enthusiast. Also, Subway has targeted non-traditional customers at locations such as convenience stores and truck stops. In 2010, Subways revenues from global sales were 15.2 billion. Subway has around 37,000 stores in 100 countries, 23,334 being U.S. stores and 13,664 being international stores. This means that international stores account for around 36% of Subways sales, and as such international customers do play a role in revenue generation for Subway. (4) Discuss the major determinants of demand for the firm’s primary product. Explain your choice of variables. If necessary, describe how determinants differ across customer segments -- The demand of types of sandwiches depends on the weather and income level of the local community. Dave Matthews Band

...very unique and have not been heard before the band came about. They have touched millions of people’s hearts, especially mine. The fact that they sing about real situations and real issues that are going on the world today is what makes them my favorite band. Whether I am happy, sad, or mad, The Dave Matthews Band’s album “Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King” always lifts my spirits and puts me in a better mood; their songs are inspirational. One of the songs that touch me the most is called “Funny the Way It Is”. This song is about the good and bad things going on in the world. The point being made is that even though many wonderful things are happening, bad things are occurring at the exact same time. “Funny the way it is, if you think about it/ One kid walks 10 miles to school, another's dropping out/ Funny the way it is, not right or wrong/ On a soldier's last breath, his baby's being born/ Funny the way it is, not right or wrong/ Somebody's broken heart become your favorite song/ Funny the way it is, if you think about it/ One kid walks 10 miles to school, another's dropping out” Not only does it discuss the fine times and poor times in life, but also how people take the privileges they have for granted. While kids say they hate school and drop out, there are others that appreciate an education and will do anything to get it, such as walking ten miles to school. Basically, the song tells listeners that there are so many ironic moments happening every minute of every day and...

Life Is Funny

...Justin Merriweather September 25, 2013 Reader Response Journal Life is Funny by E.R Frank 1. There were parts of the book that made me laugh, sad, and have much sympathy for the characters. One encounter is when PPPPPP parents were fighting and PPPPPP dad would beat on his mother. She didn’t any one to know that her husband was beating her. PPPPPP is always around when she is getting beaten by his dad. He tells his dad to stop, but he doesn’t listen until PPPPP calls the police one day to get rid of his dad. Another incident is when QQQQQ is raped by her dad as a little girl. On weekends she would go over her dads and she would come home crying and sick, because of what he did to her. Her mother never really listened to her, instead she was to busy counting her marbles and working, so her older sister had to tend to her needs and watch over her when she could, and keep up with chores. QQQQQQQ ends up getting pregant at 16 and WWWWW, her sister who is in college, tries to help take care of her along with QQQ new boyfriend, EEEEEE. One more time was with a young Indian girl who had trouble following the rules of her religion. She had made friends with the next door neighbor, GGGGG, who was 22221 years old and she being 33333. She isn’t supposed to be talking to him because he is not a boy in the family. He eventually commits suicide and she thinks it’s all her fault when it isn’t. The Great Defeat at Dieppe

...At dawn on August 19th, 1942, “six thousand and one hundred Allied soldiers, of whom roughly five thousand were Canadians”, landed at the French port of Dieppe in their first major test of the defense of the German-held coastline (Government). A combination of inadequate planning, insufficient fire support, and lack of communication, through air, naval, and land made for a very poor attack, and one of Canada’s worst defeats in World War Two. First of all, the Battle of Dieppe was poorly planned. It was designed to test new equipment, and gain the experience and knowledge necessary for planning a great amphibious assault that was one day necessary to defeat Germany. Also, after years of training in Britain, some Canadian politicians and generals were anxious for Canadian troops to experience battle (Government). The plan called for five separate attacks along 16 km. The principal assault was on Dieppe. “The four others were subsidiary flank attacks. The flank attacks were to be delivered simultaneously in: nautical twilight at 4:50 A.M” (Christie 9). They would have relied on surprise. The main attack would have came 30 minutes later. It all started at blue beach, where “they arrived late in their bid to take out enemy artillery and machine guns guarding the Dieppe beaches” (Canadian). From the start, the enemy pinned down the Canadians, and shot them up until the raid was over. Then at Green beach, “the part of the unit, tasked with reaching a radar station and anti-aircraft...

...For centuries China has stood as a leading civilization, outpacing the rest of the world in the arts and sciences. On the other hand, over the last decade it has plummeted economically. A big factor for this massive downfall is the population of the country. China is overpopulated, at the dawn of this century there were some 426 million people living in China. Today the population is about 1.2 billion. About two-thirds of this 900 million-person increase was added within the last 50 years. In essence, the Mainland China alone contributes to at least twenty percent of the world's contribution. (Ogilvy 2000:97) The Chinese government realized that something had to be done or they would never be able to prosper as a country. Not at the rate they were heading, that's for sure. They decided to set up a plan to reduce the population growth. They called it China's one-child policy. This policy limits a Chinese couple to bearing only one child. (Milwertz 1997:56) Initially, the Chinese government adopted the policy in order to reduce the severe famine that plagued the country. They realized later that it would also help them prosper economically since the overpopulation held them back. The one child policy, although not formally written into law consisted of three main points. Advocating delayed marriage and delayed child bearing, advocating fewer and healthier births, and advocating one child per couple. (Wang 1995:34) Immediately after the policy was enforced, infanticide was introduced...

...Aaron Eckhoff Sociology in Sport Joyce Welling November 18, 2014 Sports in High School There are many issues that come up with sports in high school that go along with academics. The expanding of sports today is mostly in England and North America. In America, is highly taken for granted that high schools sponsor sports and promote them to the students. Sports are a huge part of the American culture and living the American Dream. Interscholastic sports are accepted and a huge part of the high schools in America, but there are issues that come up when they are threatening the importance of academics. There are four main questions that come up with the issue of interscholastic sports programs. They are; what claims do people make when they argue for and against the program? How are sport programs related to education and the experiences of students? What effects do sports programs have on the organization of schools and the achievement of educational goals? And, what are the major problems associated with high school and college sport programs and how might they be solved? All of these questions are important for understanding and solving the issues that come along with sports and academics in high school. Funny In Farsi Analysis

...Authors Firoozeh Dumas and Mawi Asgedom tell the stories of their respective journeys as immigrant to America. Firoozeh uses description to describe her early years in America in Funny in Farsi while Asgedom uses personal reflection to explain what being an immigrant really meant in of Beetles and Angels. While both authors discuss valuable experiences, they use different strategies to convey their perspectives. In Funny in Farsi, Dumas focuses on her early life using description to show exactly what people asked and told about Dumas. Specifically, she tells about the misconceptions and questions Americans asked about her and Iran. Dumas directly states her perspective when she tells how the Americans asked their questions. To support this point, Dumas tells her readers that “Americans were kind and unafraid to ask questions, and willing to listen.” (149) The second strategy Dumas uses is an anecdote. Dumas says “I never told them the truth. I figured that someday, somebody would.” (152) Dumas is telling us about how older kids who wants to know how to swear in her language, but she tricked them into saying “man kharam”...

Funny Boy Postmodernism Essay

...analytical theory that is used to compare and evaluate articles, novels, and other literary sources. For instance, the classification of gay vs. straight with Arjie and his family is a direct example of postmodernism in the novel, Funny Boy. In similarity, Sinhalese vs. Tamil is another comparison that represents the anger of Ammachi towards Anil. Funny Boy follows a protagonist, Arjie, who has yet to find his true identity but continues to build different relationships with different characters. The story elaborates on the civil war between the Tamil and the Sinhalese which has a deep connection with the different relationships created throughout the story. These relationships; gay and straight, Tamil and Sinhalese, old and youth are what could be analyzed with the literary device, postmodernism. In the novel, Arjie begins narrating the story as a young Tamil boy who finds himself different from his entire family and his friends. He finds himself connected to a different side of sexuality as he plays a childish game called “bride-bride”. For many years he constantly volunteered to play the role of the female character even though male roles were still available. While he does this, he explores life through a female perspective and is soon titled as “funny” referring to gay. His parents are extremely aggravated and try to avoid their family reputation from being disgraced. In order to save it, they forcefully make Arjie play cricket with his older brother, so he can rediscover his...
