Fusilli
No parent should live to see their son or daughter die. However, in times of war and strife, young men and women, sons and daughters, sometimes have to pay the heaviest price and sacrifice their lives to protect others. The short story explores the anger and grief that the loss of a son creates and how it can devastate a family.
The text begins in medias res. Because of this, we do not have a backdrop of information to work with when we read the text. The text centres on a nameless narrator through whose confused and disconnected thoughts we slowly learn more and more about his situation and the reason for his unexplained anger. Because of the lack of the characterisation in the short story, we have to analyse his behaviour and his reactions to events to learn about the character. The story follows the common formulae of a short story in that it lets the reader learn about the background through recollections and flashbacks. We are introduced to three characters: the narrator, a husband and father, his wife Jen, and their son Doug. From what can be gathered from reading in the text, Jen and the narrator used to live a comfortable middleclass life. This is seen in lines 21, to
23: “[…] his mobile in his top pocket in case of problems.” and goes on to say: “Shop patrol to base.
No fresh ginger, Jen.” This shows that they live an untroubled life without a lot of concerns.
Additionally, line 64 suggests that they are lower middle class people, because they can only afford to treat themselves and shop in Waitrose instead of Tesco now that their son has moved out. Reading the text begs the question: “How come he is filled with anger when he lives a comfortable life?” The text gives an explanation when it reveals that their son, Doug, has served in
Afghanistan in the Helmund province, which is recognised as one of the most active warzones in

Analysis of the Short Story Fusili by Graham Swift

...A: Fusilli At some point in life, we’ve most likely all experienced either a good or a bad drastic life changing experience. That moment when you reach a point of no return, and you’ll never truly be able to go back to how things used to be before this event. Sometimes these incidents can be rather ravaging, but it’s something we all go through in life, at one point or another. The occurrences of life changing events, is just what the short story “Fusilli” deals with, as it portrays the devastating event of losing someone you love. The short story was written in 2014, by the British writer, Graham Swift, who was awarded the Booker Prize in 1996. The composition of the short story highly reflects the main character’s feelings and thoughts, as we hear about the fathers feelings and memories about his dead son, but it also highlights the atmosphere of the story. The story starts out in the present, as we hear about the father walking around in the supermarket, whereas it quickly moves into a flashback, as he starts to think back to the time where his son called him from Afghanistan. Throughout the story the narrator goes back and forth between the present time and the flashbacks, which also creates a kind of chaotic atmosphere. As the father is clearly in a confused and ravaging state of mind too, this makes it easier for the reader to relate to the father’s feelings and frustrations. The storyline seems to last a long time, because of the many flashbacks, whereas it actually...

Barilla Spa

...Executive Summary Barilla SpA was founded in 1875 and today is the world's largest pasta manufacturer. They produce 35% of all the pasta sold in Italy and 22% percent of what is sold in Europe. Barilla has revolutionized the pasta industry's marketing practices by creating a recognizable brand name and strong image. However, their traditional business practices are becoming increasingly inefficient and costly. Operating within a environment of large scale demand variations which have grossly inflated manufacturing, inventory, and transportation costs Giorgio Maggiali, director of Barilla's logistics department is proposing an innovative idea created by his predecessor Brando Vitali called Just-in-Time Distribution (JITD). This is a significant change from their traditional methods of distributors ordering freely and independently from Barilla. JITD requires that all members of the distribution channel share sales information and allow Barilla to order and dispense the amount of products to each distributor that they deem appropriate. This would ideally more accurately match supply with demand decreasing operational inefficiencies within the entire supply chain. The following report outlines the current issues facing Barilla and how the JITD system should improve their incumbent deficiencies. Issue(s) Identification Immediate Issue Extreme fluctuations in demand causing operational inefficiencies has Barilla looking for new options to improve. Maggiali is...

Barialla Spa Case Study

...The Barialla SpA (A) Written case Report for the JITD Program Module # 5 Oct 15, 2015 Table of Contents Executive summary Barilla SpA, an Italian pasta manufacturer is experiencing problems in manufacturing and distribution systems caused by fluctuations in demand. They are the worlds largest pasta producer and are initiating the Just in time Distribution (JITD), which is supposed to help the company to meet the demand fluctuations imposed by the company’s manufacturing and distribution system. The current delivery system at Barilla follows the traditional way of ordering through distribution centres placing orders with the company. Instead Barialla wants to engage its own logistics organizations, which would specify the appropriate delivery quantities that would meet end customer needs and distribute the workload on Barilla’s manufacturing and logistics systems. The Just in time Distribution has been met with significant resistance by the distributors and Barilla’s own sales and marketing organizations. After looking at all of the information provided and careful analysis of the problem I have suggested that Barilla should implement the JITD at the pilot level and once successfully implemented with positive results it should be implemented throughout in stages. I will be providing analysis and recommendations on how to increase the chances that the JITD program will work and be accepted and also consider the reasons why it should be implemented. ...Barilla SpA - Case Study Table of Contents I. Executive summary II. Issue Identification III. Environmental and Root Case Analysis IV. Alternatives and Options V. Recommendations VI. Implementation VII. Monitor and Control/ Conclusion I. Executive Summary My decision for this case is to implement the Just-In-Time Distribution (JITD) system. Barilla SpA, an Italian pasta manufacturer, is experiencing amplified levels of inefficiencies and rising costs due to variability in demand from its distributors. In order to bring things back into place and to improve margins, Giorgio Magialli, the Director of Logistics at Barilla wants to implement a Just-In-Time Distribution (JITD) system that was proposed by his predecessor Brando Vitali. This system is entirely different from the existing setup and is being opposed by both the distributors and Barilla’s Sales and Marketing Department. In this report we have studied the reasons for this opposition and have suggested strategies. We have given our rationale for the JITD system to work and have proposed recommendations to resolve all existing issues. We think that a centralized supply chain with Barilla having authority of the orders over the distributors will result in better margins for all the partners. We believe that by following these recommendations and implementations, Barilla will succeed in influencing its distributors and sales and marketing personnel to work together and apply the JITD program...

Maggi Business

...Executive summary Recent success in the Indian market of pasta has compelled Nestle Bangladesh to introduce new snack “Maggi Pasta” in Bangladeshi market. This snack is still not that much popular because of unavailability and high price. Beside that no other company is producing or supplying a good amount of pasta in the local market. This gives a huge advantage to Nestle Bangladesh ltd. to enter in a very less competitive market and enjoy the first mover advantage. The company will get benefit from already a well established distribution channel of nestle and its’ dexterous staff to give the product in the peak of its success. The expected market share could be achieved by a sound promotion policy and by the brand name of Nestle as the maggi noodles is already a well known product. This instant pasta mix will attract customers just like it attracted the noodles customers. And as a different product it will be able to gain more market share by creating a completely new market. New types of pasta will be introduced to the market to keep the market in hand and the beginning will have a pasta festival that will create a brand value, promote the product, strengthen the brand in the customers’ mind and make customers believe that the only instant pasta mix provider in the market is maggi. The company is expecting to have a 40 percent share of the market at the first quarter and what will reach in 80/85 percent at the end of the year. Production cost could be minimized by nestle...

...For exclusive use at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), 2015 9-694-046 REV: MARCH 25, 2008 JANICE H. HAMMOND Barilla SpA (A) Giorgio Maggiali was becoming increasingly frustrated. As director of logistics for the world’s largest pasta producer, Barilla SpA1, he was acutely aware of the growing burden that demand fluctuations imposed on the company’s manufacturing and distribution system. Since his appointment in 1988 as director of logistics, he had been trying to make headway on an innovative idea proposed by Brando Vitali, who had served as Barilla’s director of logistics before Maggiali. The idea, which Vitali called Just-in-Time Distribution (JITD), was modeled after the popular “Just-InTime” manufacturing concept. In essence, Vitali proposed that, rather than follow the traditional practice of delivering product to Barilla’s distributors on the basis of whatever orders those distributors placed with the company, Barilla’s own logistics organization would instead specify the “appropriate” delivery quantities—those that would more effectively meet end-consumer’s needs yet would also more evenly distribute the workload on Barilla’s manufacturing and logistics systems. For two years Maggiali, a strong supporter of Vitali’s proposal, had tried to implement the idea, but now, in the spring of 1990, little progress had been made. It seemed that Barilla’s customers were simply unwilling to give up their authority to place orders as they pleased; some...
