The future of medicine

Thesis: The future of medicine holds advancements in medical technology that will greatly increase our longevity and quality of life.
I. Introduction
A. Attention Getter: Everyone in this room is going to DIE, what matters to each one of you is when and how your death is going to happen.
B. Relevance: The answer to both how and when you are going to die will change dramatically with new medical technology emerging.
C. Credibility: As a Pre-Med neuroscience student, I’ve been very interested in the up and coming technology in medicine. In fact, this summer I studied in Germany learning about brain computer interfaces, but I will get more into that later.
D. Thesis: (What matters to each one of you is that) the future of medicine holds incredible technological advancements that will greatly increase our longevity and quality of life.
E. Preview: In the not so distant future, medicine will tell you if you are about to get sick, or if any of your organs need replacing new ones will be grown with your DNA, and if you are paralyzed or disabled you will be able to control robotic exoskeletons to compensate for any loss with your brain waves.
Transition: Now I know this sounds kind of technical and boring and you are probably thinking why do I care, let me answer that. Currently medicine is set up so that if you feel sick you go to the doctor, but by the time you feel symptoms, for instance of cancer, you have a later stage of the disease which is often a death sentence. With improved preventative medical technology, you will be treated at the very beginning stages of any illness while it’s still easy to treat and cure.
II. Body
A. Preventative Medicine
1. We are coming into an age where self-testing will be easily and painlessly done routinely at home and instantly uploaded to your physician so they can monitor your health and make a diagnosis. Whether it’s a patch that wirelessly monitors your blood pressure, a heart monitor or blood and urine tests that easily upload to your phone or computer right to your doctor and in the next decade these will be the norm in everybody’s homes. The way things are heading, in the future, we will have diapers that sample a child’s urine and bowl movement and analyze critical levels and any abnormalities and sends the information digitally to your doctor.
2. Also, revolutionized medical scanning will be faster and more convenient because of the new technology being developed in hand held body scanners that will allow doctors or maybe even you take x-ray, cat scan or ultrasound instantly anywhere for instant diagnosis.
3. Also, if your doctor is far away, there is now the RP7 robotic doctor. The RP7 is a robot a screen showing the doctor’s face a high quality camera showing him what is going on, so a doctor could see a patient from a remote location.
Transition: Now what happens when you need a new organ?
B. Regenerative Medicine
1. Today, everyone knows that there are not enough transplant organs to go around. There are patients at the bottom of a transplant list waiting on their deathbed for a donor. A new technology is being developed that uses a 3-D printer with human cells as the ink to create brand new organs, this ensures that everyone has the organs they need.
2. And what about regeneration? If you cut off a starfishes arm, most of the time a new one will regenerate. Why can’t human’s regrow organs or body parts? With the new technology and research in human stem cells we are finding that we can. These cells have the ability to morph and arrange themselves into new organs.
3. So because of regenerative medicine, a few years down the road, people who have failing organs due to age will simply get a replacement and dying from old age will become significantly less common as life-spans increase dramatically.
Transition: As I mentioned earlier, this summer in Germany I studied this amazing new technology called Brain Computer Interfaces. Imagine transmitting signals directly to someone's brain that would allow them to see, hear or feel specific sensory inputs. Consider the potential to manipulate computers or machinery with a thought.
C. BCI/BMI
1. Think about people who are completely paralyzed, who have lost control over their own bodies. Using this technology which interprets brain signals, paralyzed patients can control a robotic arm on their own.
2. Taking this one step further, researchers have built exoskeleton machines giving paralyzed individuals control over their entire body with their brain
3. And where the patient can no longer speak, where a completely locked-in they can think letters with their minds that type into a machine that will translate into speech for them.
Transition: This new paradigm in medical technology is all in it’s research stages now but is only a few years away from being a reality that will make a big difference for you and your loved ones lives. III. Conclusion
A. Preventative medicine is expanding at an unimaginable rate, while research in regenerative medicine promises prolonged health, and new technology called brain-computer-interfaces are restoring hope in people that never thought they could move or speak again.
B. This technology will change all of our lives.
C. The future of medicine holds advancements in medical technology that will greatly increase our longevity and quality of life.
D. We all are going to die. But much later in life and less dramatically than previous generations thanks to medical advancements

The Future of Medicine

...The Future of Medicine Andrew Hovey GEN 499 Eric Fox 03/03/14 In theory, the Affordable Care Act is a great plan but the execution has been terrible because People do not understand what the ACA even actually allows them to do. The ability to keep insurance that was already owned was a fallacy, and the ability of people to actually get insurance via the ACA has been mediocre at best. It does however, represent our best shot at a country where everyone has access to medical care at an affordable rate and moves us toward what I believe to be an eventuality and something that is sorely needed, socialized medicine. The reason that I believe it is sorely needed is due to the fact that the fiasco with the website marketplace rollout involved with the ACA has shown us that even the government is not capable of keeping track of all of the different insurance providers and quite frankly the only thing they have done is confuse people as to what coverage they can receive. This would not be necessary if there were one non-private entity that handled insurance for the people. Many European countries use socialized medicine and admittedly, there are varying degrees of success but our system is broken. Competing healthcare companies, different degrees of care and skyrocketing costs have made healthcare un-palletable for many. Just shopping for healthcare on the Heathcare.gov website, one can see how confusing and frustrating the search...

Pushing Medicine Into the Future

...Pushing medicine further Stem cells are cells found in animals and humans. They have the ability to divide and reproduce themselves. They are unspecialized, meaning they do not perform a specific function like muscle cells or nerve cells. But they are also pluripotent, meaning they have the ability to divide and make specialized cells—such as muscle, nerve, or skin cells—and even have the potential to make entire body parts. Some may ask, why haven’t we tried to cultivate this form of medicine? Well, the attention devoted to stem cell research has fluctuated in recent years from being really controversial and not ethical. Well now it’s back and with more evidence and validity. We have progressed recently and found that embryonic stem cells were not the most successful and productive in comparison to adult stem cells, that hold more secrets to be unlocked and more uses. These cells have been proven to have therapeutic benefits, ability to help people with infectious diseases and terminal illnesses and will not be rejected by the body’s defenses. Adult stem cells, not embryonic cells, are the next best form of medicine we have to use to date thanks to much research. Only time can tell where adult stem cells can take us. Adult stem cells can heal the body from ailments with time and apparently, with use of these cells they do the work in enough time. ”In the United States, reports The New England Journal of Medicine, patients suffering from corneal blindness can now see, and...

Stem Cells and the Future of Developmental Medicine

...Stem Cells and the Future of Developmental Medicine Stem cells have a remarkable potential to develop into many different cell types in the body during early life and growth. Stem cells undergo processes to form new types of cells which can have a specialized function. According to this function, lives could be saved by the formation of new tissues and organs. Some of the specialized cells are muscle cells, brain cells or blood cells. Although stem cell research is debatable due to moral concerns, its positive medical benefits exceed the negative social consequences. Stem cell research is a complex subject that has two main types which are embryonic stem cells and adult stem cells. Bongso and Lee explain that there are three methods in which embryonic stem cells can be retrieved. These are from embryos left from fertilization treatments, embryos produced for this function or by moving genetic material from one cell to another. The second two methods are considered to be immoral compared to the first one due to ethical reasons (2005, p.14). They also clarify that the cells should be tested to insure “Embryos are of high quality and free from both genetic and infectious diseases” (Bongso & Lee, 2005, p.15).Couples that have extra embryonic cells either donate them to childless couples, research or are get rid of them (Bongso & Lee, 2005, p. 16). Development in stem cell research has shown potential to cure life threatening diseases. Stem cells have helped in liver repair...

Review of the Institute of Medicine (Iom) Report: "The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health"

...The Institute of Medicine (IOM) partnered with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) in 2008, prior to the Affordable Care Act passing, stated a two year study on the nursing profession and changes needed to advance the future of nursing practice. The introduction of the report states the groups “established a 2-year Initiative on the Future of Nursing. The cornerstone of the initiative is this committee, which was tasked with producing a report containing recommendations for an action-oriented blueprint for the future of nursing, including changes in public and institutional policies at the national, state, and local levels” (IOM, 2011). This report also determined that nurses should continue to strive for higher levels of education and advanced training using an improved education system that promotes seamless academic progression unlike the stair-step type systems currently in place that do not facilitate education advancement. So when Congress passed the the Affordable Care Act March of 2010, which is the biggest reformation of the healthcare system since the Medicare and Medicaid programs were first created in 1965, created even more of a need for more nurses in advanced clinical roles. According to Medicaid.gov, “The Affordable Care Act is actually two separate pieces of legislation; the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (P.L. 111-148) and the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act of 2010 (P.L. 111-152). Together these 2 legislative acts expand Medicaid...

...Ethical Decision Making in Health Care 2014 Terry Schiavo Documentary Euthanasia is “intentionally causing the death of a person, the motive being to benefit that person and to protect them from further suffering. Many people who contemplate voluntary euthanasia are terminally ill or have been suffering with an illness for an extended time and they just want to end their suffering and pain. ne commit suicide or for not assisting them in the suicide process and allowing them to linger and shall not kill and that we should not interfere with God’s plans. Eastern religions’ stance is not to harm any living things and thus assisted suicide is unacceptable (BBC, 2014). Nurses have an obligation to provide our patients with the best care possible, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Nurses need to meet the needs of their patients and families, this is particularly important with end of life care. Nurses need to make patients comfortable, allow them to voice their concerns, with the moral, spiritual, ethical, and social effects for the rest of their life. Decisions about life and death in the health professions are among the most challenging from an ethical and a practical viewpoint (Purtilo & Doherty, 2011). Nurses play key roles in caring for people at the end of life which include assessing and managing pain, addressing psycho-spiritual needs, articulating values, goals, and beliefs that influence the decisions made at the end of life, for not only the client...

...Impact of IOM 2010 Report on the Future of Nursing Troy Bradley Grand Canyon University: Professional Dynamics June 7, 2013 Impact of IOM 2010 Report on the Future of Nursing In 2010, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) released its report The Future of Nursing, Leading Change, Advancing Health. This report addresses the opportunity the United States has to transform its health care system into a higher quality, safer, more affordable and accessible system since the enactment of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) (Institute of Medicine, 2010). There are many recommendations on how to bring about this transformation. Three specific nursing areas which could be affected by these are education, practice (particularly primary care), and nursing roles as leaders. Within these are also recommendations not just for future nurses, but for practical changes the nurse can make in everyday practice now. Impact on Education The report clearly recommends nurses should achieve higher levels of education and training. It emphasizes the need for more nurses to enter the workforce with a baccalaureate degree, or to obtain one early in their career (Institute of Medicine, 2010). This is a requirement many hospitals are already putting into place. It also clearly makes its case for an all-BSN workforce at the entry level, in order to have the uniform foundation for the future nursing roles that they envision. The committee believes the nursing workforce should be at 80% having a BSN by 2020. They...

Brown NURS430-V Professional Dynamics Grand Canyon University June 3, 2016 The Institute of Medicine (IOM) report was written as a guide to help nurses build a stronger health care system. The Institute of Medicine focused on prevention and wellness. Nurses need to have more education and put into practice the education and training they have received. An associate degree is ok to have but a baccalaureate degree is recommended. A baccalaureate degree has a bigger knowledge of community health. Higher educations have been linked to lower mortality rates. This is one of the many reasons a baccalaureate degree is wanted by employers. Having more availability to health care nurses will play different roles in health care. Health care will focus more on prevention. This will benefit practice registered nurses as they will be able to be the primary care provider. Nurses will be able to use their education. This will include education of patients and families. The 2010 Iom Impact on Nursing Practice, Education and Leadership

...nurses from responding to the rapidly aging and changing health care setting, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) along with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) released their report, “The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health” (Institute of Medicine, 2011). It was determined in the report that our current health care system was selling patients short on accessible, affordable, safe, quality health care. In response to their findings the IOM called on nurses in particular to transform their practices and become leaders in the health care arena. This can be accomplished through a lifetime of continuous education and leadership skills developed into a more patient centered health care system. This would ensure a safer, higher quality, accessible and affordable health care system for all (American Nurses Association, 2010) (Institute of Medicine, 2011). Our aging population needs more primary care, acute care, and long term care while most nurses seem to migrate toward specialty care services. The demand for care continues in specialty areas, but sometimes excludes many services needed by the aging population. If nurses were to continue their education from the time they became licensed until they retired or left the medical community, the sparseness that has been created in our health care system from lack of available resources, may find some relief (Institute of Medicine, 2011) (American Nurses Association, 2010). According to the IOM report, nursing education...
