Future Application For Simulators Throughout the length of the course, one thing has stood out to me: Simulation is here to stay, and is becoming more valuable. Seeing as how we are currently enrolled in a worldwide online distance-learning course, my thoughts on future application for simulators come in the context of education.
The chapter on Computer Assisted Instruction, (Lee, 2005, p. 118) aided in my thoughts of what future simulators could do to enhance informal and formal learning. In a world of lifelong learning, business training and development has the opportunity to reinvent learning models. Why spend time listening to lectures or reading textbooks when you can learn from your own virtual experiences in a gaming environment? Students can work through levels at their own pace, repeating them to consolidate core skills before moving up. Students will be able to get a much more realistic experience of the consequences of actions and decisions, learning virtually before making mistakes in the real world. The principles of gaming can incentivize behavior with your employees, partners and customers. But think beyond that, to making informal and formal learning immersive and fun.
This really seems feasible when engineered to incorporate computer-assisted instruction. They may also be more suitable for procedures trainers or FTDs, where the cost of the instructor relative to that of the cost of the device is high and, therefore, where reducing the presence of an instructor could return higher proportional savings. (Lee, 2005, p. 119).

...Introduction This chapter describes our work in evolution of buildable designs using miniature plastic bricks as modular components. Lego 1 bricks are well known for their flexibility when it comes to creating low cost, handy designs of vehicles and structures. Their simple modular concept make toy bricks a good ground for doing evolution of computer simulated structures which can be built and deployed. Instead of incorporating an expert system of engineering knowledge into the program, which would result in more familiar structures, we combined an evolutionary algorithm with a model of the physical reality and a purely utilitarian fitness function, providing measures of feasibility and functionality. Our algorithms integrate a model of the physical properties of Lego structures with an evolutionary process that freely combines bricks of different shape and size into structures that are evaluated by how well they perform a desired function. The evolutionary process runs in an environment that has not been unnecessarily constrained by our own preconceptions on how to solve the problem. The results are encouraging. The evolved structures have a surprisingly alien look: they are not based in common knowledge on how to build with brick toys; instead, the computer found ways of its own through the evolutionary search process.
