We have been assigned to work on a “work life balance project” that our industry partner, Intercontinental Trust Limited –ITL wishes to implement for their organization. ITL is an offshore management company which operates in a highly regulated financial environment. It offers a comprehensive range of financial and fiduciary services to international clients based on ethical and socially responsible business practices. It is a rapidly expanding company with an established presence of 15 years in Mauritius. The essence of our teamwork is to bring the knowledge and know- how together with the guidance of our lecturer and the Senior HR Manager from the partner industry that aims at achieving the objectives of this project. The reflection process allowed me to undertake a retrospective analysis and evaluation of the learning outcomes acquired on this project. During the evolution of the project, I have been able to identify a number of hurdles and difficulties which we had to overcome as a team and with the guidance of our lecturer. Clayton Lafferty is a tool that people can use to help analyze different aspects of one’s thought processes and behavior in order to actualize various leadership traits. The intent of the LSI survey is for the user to come away with a heightened awareness of traits that will most likely improve their ability to lead and those that may be preventing them from exhibiting enhanced managerial skills. In this essay, I will describe the results I achieved from this survey, how they impact my encounters with my co-workers and employees, as well as reflect on certain situations in my life that have encouraged the traits that I see in myself. My primary personal thinking style was determined to be the Self-Actualizing Style. Self-actualizing leaders tend to have high confidence levels and a healthy outlook that can positively affect relationships and effectiveness in work through an acute awareness of both their own and others’ feelings (Lafferty, n.d.d). This style is also characterized by a “healthy sense of self worth, concern for self development, strong instincts and intuition, and relative freedom from guilt or worry” (Lafferty, n.d.d). A process by which information is exchanged between individuals through a common system of symbols, signs, or behaviour”. Communication is an insightful human nature. It is an important tool to express one’s self and understand others. The typical elements composing communication are; message(s), sender(s), receiver(s), channel(s) and noise is usually impeded (Buchanan & Huczynski, 2010), as illustrated in Figure 1.
