Abstract Carbon nanotubes possess advantages over other materials due to their superior strengthto-weight ratios, tremendous stiffness, high conductivity, high flexibility, and low density. Many promising applications have been proposed for carbon nanotubes, including miniaturized electronic and mechanical devices. In this chapter, the applications on nontraditional machining and microscopy are introduced. Electrical discharge machining (EDM) is one of the most successful and widely accepted manufacturing processes for complicated shapes and tiny apertures with high accuracy including micro nozzle fabrication, drilling of composites and making of moulds and dies of hardened steels. This method is considered suitable for machining of materials with extremely high hardness, strength, wear resistance and thermal resistance...

...COURSE NOTES TOPIC 1: Introduction to Statistics (Textbook Chapter 1) Introduction No doubt you have noticed the large number of facts and figures, often referred to as statistics, that appear in the newspapers and magazines you read, websites you visit, television you watch (especially sporting events), and in grocery stores where you shop. A simple figure is called a statistic. A few examples: • Home and condominium sales declined 6.5% in Charleston, South Carolina in April, 2006 compared to sales in April, 2005. • Tuition and fees for resident undergraduate students at public four year institutions averaged $5,491 for 2005-06, a 7.1%increase over 2004-05. • Approximately 24 million medicare beneficiaries were enrolled in the new prescription drug program as of January, 2006. • The government reported that 138,000 jobs were added to the economy in April, 2006. • The Dow Jones Industrial Average was 11,094.04 on May 30, 2006. You may think of statistics simply as a collection of numerical information. However, statistics has a much broader meaning. Learning Objectives After completing this chapter, you will be able to: 1. Understand why we study statistics. 2. Explain what is meant by descriptive statistics and inferential statistics. 3. Distinguish between a qualitative variable and a quantitative variable. 4. Distinguish between a discrete variable and a continuous variable. 5. Distinguish among nominal,...

In this article we first time report all the optical properties for SrZrO3. The real and imaginary dielectric functions has investigated along with reflectivity, energy loss function, optical absorption coefficient, optical conductivity, refractive index and extinction coefficient under hydrostatic pressure. We demonstrated the indirect and direct bandgap behavior of SrZrO3 at (0) GPa and (40, 100, 250 and 350) GPa respectively. In addition, static dielectric constant, Optical bandgap, Plasma frequency and Static refractive index has also been reported. We verified the Penn's model and showed the inverse relation between static dielectric constant and optical bandgap. Further, we proved the direct relation between static dielectric constant and static refractive index. Both these constants increased by increasing the pressure...

...relationship between being in a committed relationship and academic performance in college females. The study involved 60 female undergraduate participants from a small, private, Catholic women’s college in northeastern New Jersey. It was hypothesized that college females who were in a supportive committed relationship would have significantly higher GPAs than students who were in unsupportive relationships. The Psychosocial Intimacy Questionnaire (PIQ, Tesch, 1985) was used to measure intimacy, specifically romantic love, supportiveness, and communication ease in a participant’s committed relationship. A student’s current GPA and questions regarding course failure and academic probatio0n. This study investigated the relationship between being in a committed relationship and academic performance in female college students. College students refer to female undergraduates attending a small, private, Catholic women’s college in northeastern New Jersey, at any class standing (freshmen, sophomore, etc). Committed relationship refers to a monogamous, supportive relationship with the student’s significant other. Academic performance refers to the student’s GPA. A study by Bailey and Miller (1998) investigated if female and male undergraduates are more satisfied with their lives if they have more or less active life styles. How active students are in pursuing goals and having a large number of roles and obligations, while at the same time maintaining interpersonal relationships they could rely on...

...which might have a negative impact of financial protectionism in some instances or lead to greater global financial coordination and transparency. In the ‘new normal’, the West has lost its ability to set the global agenda as seen in the transition from a G-7 to a Group of 20 which includes players in the Emerging Markets like Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Korea, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates . Much as the ‘new normal’ had its effects on the global economies world over, its effects in Zimbabwe did not go unnoticed. The “new normal” in Zimbabwe was mainly characterised by political change, adoption of a multi-currency regime and the global recession. Political Change The signing of the Global Political Agreement (GPA) in 2008 and the...

...automatically calculates bin ranges so you can leave that box blank. Below is the automatically created histogram for the variable “Tuition”. It is mathematically correct, but doesn’t look very good because of the “weird” numbers Excel has chosen for the bin limits. (A “bin” is the same thing as a “category” and is defined by a lower limit and an upper limit. Excel counts all data values that are strictly greater than the lower limit up to and including the upper limit. The count for the second bar from the left is 3, indicating that there were 3 schools with tuition more than $11,614 and up to and including $14,282.40. [pic] Making an effective histogram If you want your histogram to make an effective exhibit in a report or presentation, it should “look good.” The key is to use “familiar” numbers for the bin endpoints. There are a few other points that...

...MADISON COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS Grade Scale Review Committee Final Report January 2010 Grade Scale Review Committee Background The MCPS Grade Scale Review Committee was formed in the spring of 2009 at the request of Dr. Brenda Tanner, Superintendent of Schools. The Committee came together as a response to parental concerns about the current grade scale in use in MCPS and in light of changes to the grade scales in both Loudoun and Fairfax Counties. The concern raised was that the grade scale used in MCPS results in unfair comparisons between the MCPS students and students in other districts who use what could be considered a less stringent scale. MCPS currently uses a mostly seven‐point scale, whereas districts like Albemarle and Fairfax use a mostly ten‐ point scale. Essentially, the concern was that in some cases students in MCPS could be unfairly compared to a student in a district that uses a ten‐point scale. For example, if Student A from MCPS and Student B from Fairfax both earned grades of 92 they would equate differently in terms of GPA (MCPS=B+ and Fairfax=A‐). If these students were compared for something like college admissions the MCPS student could be viewed as weaker in terms of GPA even though the percentage grade is the same. At first glance, the decision to change to a ten‐point grading scale seems simple. However, the issue is much more complex than simply comparing scales of surrounding districts and choosing the one that fits Madison...

...CHAPTER 11 FORECASTING MODELS SOLUTIONS TO DISCUSSION QUESTIONS 11-1. The steps that are used to develop any forecasting system are: 1. Determine the use of the forecast. 2. Select the items or quantities that are to be forecasted. 3. Determine the time horizon of the forecast. 4. Select the forecasting model. 5. Gather the necessary data. 6. Validate the forecasting model. 7. Make the forecast. 8. Implement the results. 11-2. A time-series forecasting model uses historical data to predict future trends. 11-3. The only difference between causal models and time-series models is that causal models take into account any factors that may influence the quantity being forecasted. Causal models use historical data as well. Time-series models use only historical data. 11-4. Qualitative models incorporate subjective factors into the forecasting model. Judgmental models are useful when subjective factors are important. When quantitative data are difficult to obtain, qualitative models are appropriate. 11-5. Least squares refers to holding the sum of the square of the difference between the observed values and the regression line to a minimum. 11-6. The disadvantages of the moving average forecasting model are that the averages always stay within past levels, and the moving averages require extensive record keeping of past data. 11-7. When the smoothing value, α, is high, more weight is given to recent data. When α is low, more weight is given to past...

...Education is in the way of learning The problem with education is that we don’t learn anything. I am not speaking from the point of view of some adolescent who just dislikes school and will badmouth it as much as possible, nor am I just trying to create some sort of outlandish hyperbole to get the attention of others. The fact is, through my observations, we have been shuffled through the school system. We are measured in intervals, similar to a visit to the doctor measures our weight and height. But with a doctor, the height is a qualitative measurement. An inch is an inch, no questions asked. The problem is, the school system has taken upon itself to measure us the same way. Inch for inch. A for A. So they have to measure us in the qualitative respect too. They don’t care amount how much we learn. They care about how many facts we can spit out, and how fast we can do it. Impressive. The inner psychology of the school system is pretty simplistic to understand. Random facts are the easiest way to measure students. You get it right, or you don't. Yes or no. A by A. You can mark the intelligence of a student by their GPA. In my humble opinion, it doesn’t really matter what your grade is. That doesn’t show anything about intelligence. But you really didn’t need anyone to tell you that. I hope not, anyway. The irony is, knowing the year Napoleon didn’t conquer Cuba will not help us in life. Bottom line: No one wants to hire someone who knows a bunch of facts...
