Disaster in Galveston: The Hurricane of 1900
At the turn of the 20th Century Galveston, Texas was a prospering city that many considered to be ahead in the race for economic dominance in the state. It had a population of 37,000, a thriving business district, and an extremely active port which made it the center of trade in Texas. However on September 8, 1900 a hurricane swept the island, devastating its population, destroying many homes and businesses, and cutting it off from the rest of the world.
Galveston is an island 30 miles long and at many points no more than one mile from north to south. Located off the south-eastern coast of Texas, it lies in between the Galveston Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. Its location, while making it conducive to the sort of economic and social growth that came at the end of the 19th Century, also makes it dangerously prone to hurricanes. Warm waters, like those in the Gulf of Mexico, are a source of energy for storm systems. On top of sitting in warm ocean water, Galveston has a max elevation of only 8.7 feet (and an average much lower than that), making it susceptible to the dangers of storm surges and flooding. Since most of Galveston is at or only slightly above sea level, high waters pushed ashore by heavy winds were able to flood over the entire island, washing people and property away with it.
Galveston’s societal conditions further exacerbated the destruction. In the late 19th and early 20th Century, the island was a thriving port and a center for trade in Texas. It had a growing population, many new homes, and a lot of wealth, making the potential for disaster high. In 1900 much of Galveston’s population, never having seen a seen a hurricane near the strength of the one on that came on September 8, had no idea of the potential dangers of their geography, and assumed that nothing could stop the boom in economic and social

...decisions after a horrific disaster in 1900 [Larson]. In addition, well-researched essays by Henry Demarest Lloyd and Emma Goldman back up Larson’s theory that the Gilded Age was actually a very dark time for the United States. Isaac’s Storm describes the historical aspects of the national weather service, weather forecasting, and hurricane predictions. Larson gives insight into the personal tragedy of a destructive storm in September of 1900 and how it affected Galveston, Texas and its position as a major city in the United States. Teemed with devastation and arrogance, the book follows Isaac Cline who was one of the first meteorologists at a time when there really was not a true science connected to weather predictions. He showed a real aptitude in this new field and eventually found himself assigned to the weather bureau in Galveston, Texas [Larson]. At the beginning of the 20th Century, a great confidence pervaded the United States. Isaac Cline was one of the era’s new men, a scientist who believed he knew all there was to know about the motion of clouds and the behavior of storms. This type of confidence was matched with the wealth and power of industry leaders acting as robber barons and not captains of industry [Foner]. According to Larson and essayists Lloyd and Goldman, there was an imbalance between the rich and the poor and the United States felt bigger and stronger than ever before.

Port of Galveston

...History Galveston Island was discovered by Juan de Grijalva in 1519 with the first settlement established in 1816 by French Privateer Louis-Michel Aury. Over three hundred years later, the Port of Galveston was officially established as a port in 1825 by the Congress of Mexico making it the oldest port west of New Orleans. But its unofficial roots can be traced to 1817 when pirate Jean Lafitte landed on Galveston Island and made it the base for his operations. Through the 1800’s and into the 1900’s the Port of Galveston grew to be one of the busiest ports in the United States second only to New York City. Common cargoes handled during the boom years included cotton, wheat, cattle and rice. Today Fast forward to today and The Port of Galveston is an enterprise utility of the City of Galveston receiving no tax payer support. The port is overseen by a six person Board of Trustees appointed by the City Council. The Port Director is responsible for the day to day activity of the Port with the Board providing input on policy and direction. The port is essentially a landlord port and therefore not involved with the operations of its “tenants”, but structures leases and agreements so there is a return on its investments. But the port is not guided solely on attaining a ROI but also seeks to act as an economic driver for the region so job creation is a key component in decision making. Attributes The Port of Galveston is located on the northern shore of the barrier...

Analysis of Bp

...Analysis of BP’s Response to the spill in the Gulf BP’s Response to the Deepwater Horizon Spill On April 20, 2010 an unprecedented oil spill occurred in the Gulf of Mexico. BP suffered not only personnel and equipment loss, but public relations loss as well. Many Americans felt outraged at BP for the effects of the spill on the Gulf Coast communities. Although the media immediately discussed the environmental implications of the disaster, many people felt that the impacts on the Gulf Coast communities, such as the negative effects on the seafood and tourism industries, received inadequate attention. An article that came out less than two months after the spill in The Working Waterfront mirrored the feelings of many Americans, “Each day we are confronted with media coverage of oiled birds, coastal wetlands, beaches and aggrieved local politicians, but little about the personal and community impacts ” (Herz, 2010). BP lost its good reputation and needed to create an initiative to show its commitment to the communities in which it resides. In an attempt to rebuild its reputation, BP’s “Gulf of Mexico Restoration” website uses these three strategies: it uses testimonies of Gulf Coast locals to highlight BP’s understanding of Gulf communities; it uses images of its sponsored events to highlight BP’s involvement and immersion in those communities, and it uses repetition of the word “engage” to emphasize its commitment to the Gulf and the people in it. BP uses testimonies of southern-accented...

On April 20, 2010 the explosion on the Deepwater Horizon oil rig resulted in the deaths of 11 workers and the leakage of over four million barrels of oil into the Gulf of Mexico. To show that BP is a company that takes responsibility for its actions, BP created the Gulf of Mexico Restoration page to provide information about the situation. “Gulf of Mexico Restoration” website includes information needed to understand how the company compensates people and businesses for its failure. BP’s “Gulf of Mexico Restoration” website uses three strategies to try to repair its reputation: to show the public that BP is trying to help to develop a better community in the Gulf states, the company’s website uses a video clip that shows the company’s sponsorship of the Challenger Learning Center which helps educate local children; to show the public that BP is an ethical company and is ready to compensate the damages people and businesses suffered because of the oil spill, the website offers the affected individuals claim forms to report damages; to show the public that BP’s effort to restore the environment is successful, the website uses colorful photographs of people involved in the restoration processes. As of 2006, the city had a population of 2.14 million and anchors a metropolitan area of 5.5 1 million people. Houston is the economic and cultural center of the western Gulf Coast Region and southeastern Texas. Over the past several decades the city has rapidly added population and developed in a low density autocentric form. Houston is well known for being the largest city in the nation with no zoning. This laissez-faire government structure allowing for the market to dictate urban form is one of the reasons why Houston has remained an affordable and viable place for people and businesses to relocate. However, the loosely regulated growth throughout Metropolitan Houston is having many negative impacts on the quality of life and poses serious implications to the future viability and livability of Houston in the future. In most cities, zoning is one the most effective instruments used by planners to shape the built environment. However, since Houston and Harris County have no zoning powers, deed restrictions and ordinances are used as land use planning tools. Many planning decisions in Houston are made at the neighborhood level and are spear headed by non-profits such as the Gulf Coast Institute 2 . Bp Oil

...April 20th, 2010 marks the largest marine oil spill in the history of the petroleum industry. The catastrophic event, commonly referred to as the British Petroleum (BP) oil spill or Deepwater Horizon oil spill, took place in the Gulf of Mexico and started due to “well integrity failure” on BP’s Deepwater Horizon oilrig. A “blowout preventer,” the device that seals the well in situations such as this, failed to engage. The failure led to hydrocarbons uncontrollably shooting up the well, triggering a chain of explosions. These explosions not only killed 11 BP personnel, but also unleashed over four million barrels of oil into the Gulf of Mexico (Bryant 2011). The leak took three months to stop, despite a variety of attempts, before BP finally capped it off on July 15th, 2010 (Adams and Gabbert 2010). In response to the crisis BP launched a website to present itself and its responses in a positive manner. BP’s “Gulf of Mexico Restoration” website uses these three strategies to try to repair its reputation: BP uses vibrant images of beaches and aquatic habitats to visually demonstrate its progress toward restoring the environment affected by the Deepwater Horizon accident; chronicles its accomplishments of restoring the Gulf of Mexico using sizeable headliners and captions, and provides a timeline of expenditures to display its financial commitment to revamping the damaged region. BP uses stunning pictures of restored beaches and enhanced aquatic habitats to express its commitment...
