Compared with the ancient Emperors in Chinese history, Gaozu by no means is a perfect moral king. Kicking his children out of the carriage while flying for life from Xiang Yu’s army, randomly cursing and insulting his ministers on spot, and using treacherous tactics to survive and win battles, all of these give Gaozu an inferior image that he does not worry about honor and other moral norms. However, rising from the commoners, Gaozu beat all the odds, defeated his rivals, became the “Exalted Ancester” of the great Han dynasty, which ruled a united China peacefully for more than four hundred years.
