Wouldn’t it be neat to be able to grow your own crops? You could use these crops for whatever you wanted. You could sell them, use them to eat and enjoy yourself, or even can them. There are many benefits to growing your own crops right in your own yard. Good afternoon. My name is Jessica Crabtree and I proudly represent the Taylor County High School FFA. Today I will be discussing with you how to prepare your home garden for growing crops and preserving these crops. If you follow these guidelines and tips I share with you today I assure you that you will be very pleased with the turn-out of your garden. To start off with you will need to choose what crop you would prefer to grow. This is actually a lot harder than you may think it is. If you are a beginner or you want to start small then I would advise you not to grow a lot of crops at one time. When my grandpa and I started growing crops in his garden we started by growing potatoes, we then went to growing corn, and now we grow different varieties of crops. With a little practice you too can increase the amount of crops you grow. You will need to determine what crops you can grow in your certain land location. Certain crops can be affected by soil, rainfall, climate, or the space available. These all play a huge roll in what crops that you decide to grow. Be sure to choose a location with the requirements for the crops that you plan to grow; they will need good direct sunlight for at least six hours each day. It may be better to work within a fenced area, for this will cut down on some animals getting into your crops. You will also need to become familiar with different types of food crops. If you plan to grow your own crops for your own needs, than you will need to consider your whole diet, along with your family’s diet as well. You need to plan the layout of your garden and be sure to allow room for your crops to grow and room for yourself to work efficiently in the garden. Keep your storage method in mind as well. For example if you plan to grow grains you will need barns to keep your stored harvest dry. Examples of storing methods are dehydration, canning, freezing, and in-ground storage. My grandpa and I prefer to can our crops because we enjoy this and it’s a lot easier for us to do. Now you are ready to start your own garden. You need to begin by breaking the ground which simply means loosening the soil. You will need to turn the soil using a shovel or a tiller as deep as you can. While you are doing this you will need to remove any large stones, rocks, or debris you may come across while tilling your garden. After you have tilled your soil you then need to smooth the soil with a rake evening out the low and high spots, and then fertilize the soil based on the crops specific needs. After this you lay off the rows. This is fairly simple and easy to do. You begin by marking out the area you intend to plant and with a hoe or a plow create a raised bed in the loose soil in a line across the plot. Next make your furrow which is a shallow groove cut in the soil. Place your seeds or crops into their furrow at the depth required for the specific crop you’re planting. After placing the seed you need to cover them and gently pack down the soil lightly so the seed bed doesn’t dry out as quickly. Cultivate your crops whenever the ground becomes packed by rainfall or anything else that may happen such as weeds become a problem, and also watch for insects and animals which may damage your crops, and therefore cause you to lose money as well as time. You will need to learn on when to harvest the specific crop that you are planting. After your crop is done you will need to preserve it if you which to do so, or sell them, or whatever else you may choose to do with your crops. Drying produce is one option for long term preservation of meats, fruits, and vegetables. For fruits you may want to consider canning as an option or freezing your harvest. A vacuum sealer will give you the best results in freezing vegetables for long term use. You may now enjoy your crops. Today I have shared with you how to prepare your home garden for growing crops. If you follow these tips and guidelines I have shared with you today I assure you that you will be very pleased with the turn out of your crops.

Roof Gardens

...Roof Gardens: Advantages and Potential Problems By Johnny Johnson June 23, 2013 Roof gardens, which have been in existence for thousands of years, are growing more popular as people realize the significant benefits they offer. People living in urban areas, apartments, or residences with small gardening spaces, are no longer limited to the confines of their environment. Spaces that were sparse with greenery are now able to be converted into roof gardens that offer more than just a beautiful and relaxing environment. Energy Savings Because they use much less space than typical gardens, roof gardens not only offer privacy but also “absorb a lot of energy by being on top of a structure. They provide natural noise and thermal heat insulation, thereby cutting down on utility bills.” (Dickinson 2008) Additionally, roof gardens also provide habitats for wildlife. Thus, what was once deemed good for the eye is also now good for the environment. Feasibility of Converting Flat Roofed Buildings to Gardens There are many options for the placement of a roof garden including wood-frame structures. However, the primary guiding principal is that roof gardens should be built on structures that are strong enough to support them. “Roof gardens are more ideally suited to steel-frame and reinforced-concrete structures, on which strong support platforms can be provided as reasonable cost.” (Osmundson 1999, 14) Weaker structures or structures that require additional support be added, can be...

Essay On Herb Garden

...Growing Your Own Herb Garden Herbs have been used for thousands of years for their medicinal, cosmetic and nutritional benefits. Growing your own is not only easy, but immensely satisfying – whether you have an entire area of ground to develop a formal herb garden, or simply wish to grow a few of your favourites in pots. Whay Is My Garden Green?

...just announced a hosepipe and sprinkler ban on their eight million customers from April 3. But they are unsympathetic. "Alan Titchmarsh says it doesn't matter if your garden goes brown, it will soon perk up when it rains," says a spokeswoman. But since the hosepipe ban has been introduced because of a shortage of rain, this argument seems a little circuitous. The brown-is-beautiful spokeswoman also refers me to the advice section of Thames Water's website, which is full of warnings on the evil of power showers but of less value to distressed gardeners. Adam Pasco, editor of BBC Gardeners' World magazine, is of more help. He says gardeners shouldn't panic - their gardens need not be Saharan wastelands. His call to arms is a decisive one, with no ifs but plenty of butts. "Lots of rain falls," he explains, "but we just give it back to water companies through our drains and then pay for them to send it back to us. We should collect it instead." He says consumers fail to value water and the current drought is a "wake-up call" that will lead us to adopt a more conservationist approach, with metering, recycling and under-patio reservoirs all on the agenda. As we probably can't build an under-patio reservoir by July, he offers a few short-term expedients. Use "grey" water - bathwater and washing up water - on the garden, as long as it doesn't contain large quantities of detergents. Mulch your flowerbeds by covering the soil with compost to lock in the moisture. Don't mow lawns too...

Island Garden Research Paper

...An island garden is one that sits alone in your yard surrounded by lawn. Such a garden is meant to be viewed from all sides; therefore, some serious thought should be given to the planning and planting of an island garden. I have seen numerous island gardens where the homeowner has planted some type of tall ornamental grass, such as pampas grass, in the center of the island garden. Around the ornamental grass would be planted a circle of the same kind of plant; e.g., salvia or clumps of catmint. A final third circle would consist of an even lower growing type of plant - for instance, some type of ground cover. I have seen other island gardens that consist of a bunch of blooming perennials, with no method to the madness. Shorter perennials are lost in the middle of taller...

Garden of Earthly Delights

...Garden of Earthly Delights (Triptych) - Hieronoymus Bosch On the front outer two panels is a globe of Creation of the World. In it there is what looks like plants, mountains, etc. On the upper left hand corner there is what appears to be a small man. Perhaps this could be God himself peering down as the earth is being created? On the first of the inner panels (when looking from left to right) is a peaceful scene showing God bringing life to Eve and Adam. Adam and Eve, while looking at each, other are not touching in the image. Possibly to imply that this is a time before sin. Another eye-catching piece within this panel is the pink fountain with an owl in the center. Owls are sometimes used to symbolize wisdom, since God is supposed to be wise. The central panel The Garden of Earthly Delights is a lot more busy, and the first thing I see is that physical contact and emotion between humans is taking place, unlike the first panel, which indicates that sin is being brought into the picture. To me this panel represents the free spirited lifestyle that humans have been known to live throughout history. The third panel is Hell. It displays people being tortured for their sins that were displayed in the second panel. The bird like creature eating sinners and then disposing of them down a hole can be seen as a symbol as the loss of life. Around the hole in which the bird is disposing of the sinners is a man being force to puke up his food, a symbol for man taking advantage of the...

The Cement Garden Analysis

...The Cement Garden The Cement Garden is a traumatic novel by Ian McEwan about a very dysfunctional family in which both parents die leaving their four kids alone in the middle of their transition from childhood to adulthood. It is about these four relatively normal children and the choices they are forced to make in a very dire situation that they cannot escape. We will see how an extremely isolated and claustrophobic narrator can affect how a story is perceived and how fear of the outside world can overrule what one would and should do in such a situation as the one this family is faced with. The story is narrated by Jack, a teenage boy and second child between Julie and Sue. He has poor personal hygiene, no friends or acquaintances and spends his free time fantasizing about his older sister, Julie, and masturbating. Jack’s father dies of a heart attack in the beginning of the novel. “I did not kill my father, but I sometimes think that I helped him on his way” (page 6, line 1-2). From the very beginning, we are told of how tormented and isolated Jack’s mind is. He feels responsible for the death of his father even though he had nothing to do with it, but he has no one in which he can confide, so instead he becomes extremely isolated and lonely. Everything that happens in the story is told entirely from his point of view. When their father dies, the response from the family is disturbingly silent and unemotional, as we are told nothing of their grieving process or mood....

The Hanging Gardens

...GarHanging Gardens of Babylon By: Katerina Gillian The Hanging Gardens of Babylon are considered to be one of the original Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. They were built in the ancient city-state of Babylon, near present-day Al Hillah, Babil, in Iraq. Nebuchadnezzar II ordered the gardens to be built during his reign of 43 years between the years of 604-562 BC. He built it to help his homesick wife, Amyitis, who was from Media, overcome her depression. She missed the gardens and mountains of her homeland. The Hanging Gardens of Babylon impressed travelers and historians in ancient times. Although they no longer exist, the idea of such a magnificent garden still peaks the curiosity of people today. Architecturally, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon were an impressive. The gardens were quadrilateral in shape. Stairways went to the highest terraced roofs. The plants on these terraces overhung stone column supports. Arched vaults were placed on cubed fountains. The fountains provided humidity that acted as a form of air conditioning. The shade from the trees also helped keep cool the gardens. The garden rose in close planted levels to create man-made mountain greenery. The gardens were supported by a detailed structure of stone pillars, brick walls, and palm tree trunk beams. These trunks were watertight. “Palm beams were placed over with reed and bitumen mats, as well as two layers of baked mud brick.” All of this was coated in a layer of lead. There were fourteen underground...

Operation Market Garden

...Operation Market Garden took place during World War II between September 17th and 25th in 1944. It was fought in the Netherlands and Germany and was one of the largest airborne operations in history. The goal of Operation Market Garden was to secure the bridges across the rivers in Holland so that the Allied army could advance rapidly northwards into Germany, avoiding the Siegfried line. The plan consisted of two phases, codenamed: Market and Garden. Market consisted of airborne forces of the First Allied Airborne Army under the command of Lieutenant General Lewis Brereton to seize bridges and other terrain. Garden consisted of ground forces of the Second Army to move north led by XXX Corps under Lieutenant General Brian Horrocks. If all went as planned for the Allies the war was expected to end by Christmas 1944. General Bernard Montgomery thought up the plan for this operation in the summer of 1944. The main objective of this bold operation was to cross the Rhine River and advance into northern Germany. General Montgomery’s plan “involved the seizure of bridges in Holland by the 101st and 82nd US and 1st British Airborne Divisions. Then the British 30 Corps could advance over them and cross the Rhine and its tributaries”1. The bridges were located at Eindhoven, Nijmegen, and Arnhem ranging from thirteen to sixty-two miles away. If successful, the plan would free Holland and outflank Germany’s frontier defenses making an armored drive into Ruhr possible1. Market Garden was one of...

Analysis of the Loss of Innocence in "The Monkey Garden" from Sandra Cisneros' the House on Mango Street

... September 11, 2014 The Loss of Innocence in “Monkey Garden” In the chapter, “Monkey Garden,” from The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros, the garden symbolizes the archetypal Garden of Eden from Genesis. Similar to Adam and Eve eating from the forbidden tree, Esperanza loses her innocence in this mystical backyard. As an under-privileged child on Mango Street, Esperanza witnessed adult problems that most children her age would never dream of, especially the maltreatment of women. In this fantastical children’s garden, the kids escaped their real-life problems in search of the lost treasures the garden holds. The rich imagery Esperanza weaves into her description shows the evasion of her problems: “There were sunflowers big as flowers on Mars and thick cockscombs bleeding the deep red fringe of theatre curtains.” The images of Mars and the theatre imply entering a fictional or distant world without everyday challenges. In addition, the kids on Mango fabricate rumors that align the Monkey Garden with the Garden of Eden, “Somebody started the lie that the monkey garden had been there before anything.” Through her escape into fantasy, Esperanza kept her innocence. Through it, she stayed a child until the next day. Despite the seemingly irrevocable purity of the Monkey Garden, Sally’s kissing game with the boys not only defiles the image of the Monkey Garden but also substantiates the gender inequalities suffered by the women of Mango. Esperanza’s...

Madison Square Garden Boxing V. Earnie Shavers

...Madison Square Garden Boxing v. Earnie Shavers Ernie Shavers was scheduled to fight Muhammad Ali on 9/29/77. Both Madison Square Garden and Top Rank, Inc. each claimed to have a promotional contract with Shavers in which they wanted to promote the event. In this case the court had the ability to make the ultimate decision yet chose to not get involved with the decision of the Association of Boxing Commissions. It can be noted that the creditability of each of the parties factored into the courts conclusions. 1) The court was unwilling to disturb the finding of the boxing commission -- although it acknowledged that it had the authority to do so. This deference to the expertise of a lower, non-judicial authority is a recurrent theme in the text and sports jurisprudence generally. See Chapters 3, 13, 14, 15, and 16. 2) The parties' credibility had a great deal to do with the court's ultimate conclusions. Here, students should be reminded of the idiosyncracies of the industry involved and how they may form the predilections and inform the judgment of adjudicating bodies. The public's perception is that the boxing business has not been peopled by persons of unimpeachable character and integrity. Doubtless, as reputations are formed, and reinforced by the decisionmakers'...
