...CHAPTER – ONE Introduction 1. (A) Overview of the Garments Industry The readymade garments (RMG) industry of Bangladesh is the fastest growing export oriented industry of the country. Starting in late seventies, the ready made garment industry of Bangladesh now accounts for over 64% of the country's total export earning. A close look at the composition of RMG export of Bangladesh over the last two decades reveals that the woven garments sub-sector constituted the lion's share. In fact, the beginning of the development of RMG sector started with woven garments in 1985. In the first half the 90s, the share of woven garments was above 80%. However, the share gradually started to decline to about 70% in five years late and to 62% in 2004 and to 38.80% in 2005-2006 (Export Promotion Bureau Bangladesh, 2006). In addition, compared to its double-digit growth in the 90s, the woven garments export grew only about 8% in 2000. Such a declining growth rate and a steep decline of the share of woven garments export in the total RMG export makes it urgent to re-evaluate the status of the sector of Bangladesh vis-à-vis with that of the competing countries. Moreover, with the dominance of the proponents of free market economy, some changes are taking place in the global trade regulations affecting the readymade garments sector of Bangladesh in general. One example of such change is the phasing out of the apparel quota on December 31, 2004. Under these circumstances, it is imperative to...

...How can Transaction Cost Economics Theory be used to help Bangladesh's Government save their Garment Industry? Daryl Chen California Baptist University Abstract Bangladesh is one of the developing countries of the South Asian region, with the population near about 122 million. The country's main export sector is in the garment industry. In 2010, the country decided to raise the minimum wage due to the public's outcry of unfair wages and working conditions. In this research paper, we will look at how the increase of minimum wage has affected the country's economy and what could be done to improve the outcome. Introduction Bangladesh is one of the developing countries of the South Asian region, with the population near about 122 million. Many of the 122 million are garment factory workers whose incomes rely on the garment industry growth and the ability to offer cheaper costs than other countries in the world. Bangladesh is a developing country, which would be consider by most as an old terminology, a third world country, and it's Ready Made Garments (RMG) sector of the textile industry has been known as the biggest earner as an export and the foreign currencies that come as the result of it. The country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is greatly contributed by its textile industry. In 2010, the country raised the minimum wage. ...a Domestic Garment Company Executive Summary A domestic garment company is a privately held apparel company whose marketing mix is primarily focused on product and place (U.S operations vs. foreign countries) rather than price. The company is projecting $150 million in sales next year which is a 50% increase than last years’ sales. Their target market has been consumers who will pay more for fashionable styles due to the speed and flexibility of their operations. Therefore, price is not important as there are some psychological influences within an individual and the market motivating their actions (needs, wants, desires). Since poor working conditions are common in the apparel industry, the company’s philosophy is to be profitable without exploiting workers, but by treating employees as valued partners. The company has invested several thousand dollars in training for newly skilled workers to meet the increased production demands. Apparent Problem The principle dilemma presented in the case study, ‘Business Cycles and Employment Practices in a Domestic Garment Company ’, finds the management team of a US based, privately held garment manufacturing factory, facing the difficult responsibility of deciding how to balance and manage the task’s of keeping up with the pace of garment orders, retaining staff during winter seasons and/or reduce production based on the projected orders and the maximum inventory they can afford to carry. ...of readymade garment exports from Bangladesh over the last two decades has surpassed the most optimistic expectations. Today the apparel export sector is a multi-billion-dollar manufacturing and export industry in the country. The overall impact of the readymade garment exports is certainly one of the most significant social and economic developments in contemporary Bangladesh. With over one and a half million women workers employed in semi-skilled and skilled jobs producing clothing for exports, the development of the apparel export industry has had far-reaching implications for the society and economy of Bangladesh. Literature Review: Several authors have analyzed aspects of the garment industry in Bangladesh. Of the various aspects of the industry, the problems and the working conditions of female workers have received the greatest attention. There are several studies including the Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS) study by Salma Chowdhury and Protima Mazumdar (1991) and the Bangladesh Unnayan Parisad (1990) study on this topic. Both of these studies use accepted survey and research methodology to analyze a wealth of data on the social and economic background, problems and prospects of female workers in the RMG sector. Professor Muzaffar Ahmad looks at the industrial organization of the sector and discusses robustness and long-term viability of apparel manufacturing in Bangladesh. Wiigton (2000) provides a good overview of this industry, especially the...

...Almirez Industrial Analysis International Master of Business Administration Chung Yuan Christian University November 15, 2012 ABSTRACT The rise of globalization has shifted the manufacturers of textile and apparel to many different parts of the world in search for cheaper labor and maximization of profits. Trade liberalization also means that the world can be your market, and that everyone can be your competitor. We examine the current state of the Philippine textile industry in this context, and the role that technology plays in an industry that is struggling to survive in the face of stifling competition. The Philippines textile industry has suffered steady decline in the past several decades despite starting out strong in its early stages. This study aims to explore the potential for growth of the Philippine’s textile industry given a boost in more advanced technology and innovation. The author focuses on technology because this is the one thing that other countries have already adopted, and with which the Philippines has still yet to fully embrace, partly due to lack of funding and government support. This study will look at the Philippine textile industry’s production output from the year 2000-2010, and aims to establish a relationship between the production volume and the number of patents awarded to innovators within the Philippines, which will be used as a measure of the country’s technological advancement. This research used regression analysis and utilized the...
