Discuss your short and long-term goals. Are some of them related? Which are priorities? All my life I’ve created a list of goals to accomplish. Whether it would be for the next day, or the next week, I made an effort to complete those goals to the best of my abilities. As I grow closer to the adult age, I find myself creating goals that correlate to my future, and the relations between my goals for the rest of the school year and my life goals are intertwined. Looking back at my past goals, I realized how simple they were, with no real direction to completing them. They listed as “go to college” or “get a good job”. Nowadays, my goals are a lot more driven; my passions of service and helping others are interrelated with them. One of my short term goals is to begin a fundraiser for a homeless shelter with my Rotary Interact Club. Being the president of the club, I feel excited by the power I have over contributing projects in this group. My goal is to make the Rotary Interact Club the most successful it has ever been at West Salem High School. For the three years that I have been in the Rotary Interact Club, the amount of projects were slim, as were the amount of members. The club was lucky if it had ten members in a meeting in the past. This year, I am proud to say that the members have nearly doubled; the club now has a total of 21 members. The amount of contribution is higher than it has ever been, and the club has volunteered at over 4 organizations that deal with the homeless, handicapped children, abused children, and senior citizens. In fact, at this club, I developed my love for helping the community and volunteering. I also developed an interest of a career in Occupational Therapy through working with handicapped kids, a path in which I am currently planning on pursuing in the future. A long with developing a successful volunteering club at my high school, I also hope to pass all of my AP exams this May. I am currently scheduled in four Advanced Placement courses through my school, and I am planning on taking four AP exams: AP American Literature, AP French, AP Biology, and AP Calculus AB. This year has been a tough journey; classes have been the most difficult I have ever taken, but I am handling the workload quite well. I have taken the AP US History course my junior year in high school, in which I passed. I plan on becoming an AP scholar; a prestigious title for a student that has taken more than 3 AP exams. Besides having a part-time job as a work study student at the public library, I am also contributing 8 hours of volunteer hours a week. Senior year has been difficult to say the least, but it has also been the most rewarding. Accomplishing the heavy work load in my AP courses gives me a sense of pride for the future. Passing those AP exams will help save money on courses I would otherwise have to take in college, leading me to a closer path towards becoming an Occupational Therapist. I feel very blessed to have found my dream career at this point in my life. It could not have been a better timing; I truly feel that Occupational Therapy is the right career for me. I began developing my passion for helping people through my Rotary Interact Club, but I truly developed my passion for helping children during my time as a camp counselor at my local children’s science museum. I have been a volunteer for three years now, and am incredibly excited to revisit every summer as a camp counselor. I often teach kids the basics of science through flying rockets, and arts and crafts. Helping the kids has truly been an incredible joy ride, which is why I plan on studying to become a Pediatric Occupational Therapist. After starting a career after school, I hope to be able to let my parents retire early. My mom and dad have worked incredibly hard since they immigrated from China and Vietnam, respectively. My mom works as a contract sewer that works at home. Ever since I was young, I watched her bring home rolls of fabric that were magically turned into rainwear minutes later. She worked in the garage, while my brother and I played inside. My mom would come into the house every once in a while to check up on us, and cook lunch or dinner. I never realized how hard she worked to help support the family until she had to work another job as a waitress at a Chinese restaurant. While my dad and mom worked, my brother and I became a lot more independent at a young age, learning to make a simple sandwich that was usually done for us, to cooking a meal. My parents never showed signs of financial difficulty; I had always had a decent amount of toys, and I had always had food in my stomach, and running water. But it turns out they were just experts at keeping us away from the worrisome issues. As my mom started working more hours, my dad became the home maker of the household. He works as a caregiver at a local government home, but was recently transferred to a further branch that is now an hour of a commute. He would come home after a long treacherous day at work, and cook with his arthritis throbbing hand. Times are a lot better now, with my mom only working as a contract sewer at home, and my dad currently working at his hour commute caregiver branch. I hope to one day be able to give them the gift of a worry-free life without needing to work because they’re under the support of my financial stability. I would love to buy them a home, and a new car, all of which they would like but are too selfless to buy for themselves. All of my short-term and long-term goals are correlated in some way. Each goal leads to a larger goal that I hope to accomplish one day. The goal for the success of my Rotary Interact Club contributed to my goal of becoming an Occupational Therapist. Earning passing marks on my AP exams is a goal that would lead to my success of becoming an Occupational Therapist, and the success of such a career will lead to helping my parents retire to a relaxing life that they deserve. Every single goal I have written down holds a special place in my heart, and will always be a priority to me. These goals intertwine with my ultimate lifelong wish to live a fulfilling life that I truly enjoyed, and that I am proud of. I plan to fulfill these goals in the best way that I can, and most importantly, be the best person I can be while accomplishing them.
