...what it means to be a normal family. But what is a normal family? A White picket fence with a dog? A dad that works a 9 to 5 and a mother whose job is good housewifery? Sounds a bit outdated. Many of the people I know do not fall within the narrow scope of the "Normal Family". Most of them live in a single-parent household; with maybe a sibling or two, step brothers and sisters, and parents with their significant others. Although none of these circumstances are ideal, the fact of the matter is that it happens. Many people fall into that single parent category after failed marriages and relationships (with kids). With the continued increase in divorce this speaks to the illusion of the ideal heterosexual home and its stability. Love conquers all, and it should be the true determining factor of normality. there are millions of children waiting to be adopted into steady homes. Everyone has the right to choose who they want to spend their life with, or take care of regardless of race, religion, and gender. Therefore gay couples should have the right to affirm their love by adopting legally and publicly. Those who are against gay adoption claim that they would hate to see a child with "two moms" or "two dads" because they would be teased and tormented for it. But then they forget the fact that if children were raised to be more tolerant and accepting of this there would be no Teasing. If it was taught to them that there is not just one family dynamic they would be more accepting...

...Barbie Miller Philadelphia Movie Review I think the movie was okay, not something I would have watched on my own. This movie shows how one is discriminated against because of his disease. Discrimination comes in all kinds of forms, from racism, gender, age and more. I am not sure how this really fits into this period, other than it was in the early 80’s when people started to learn about aids. Homosexuals started coming out of the closet as they say. You had to be afraid to be gay because you would be persecuted for your sexual orientation. Everyone thought Aids was just related to the gay community, but it was also from doing drugs with someone that had the disease. Sharing needles from during heroin with someone that was a carrier. Therefore, here is my take on the movie. Andrew Beckett (Tom Hanks) is one of Philadelphia's most promising lawyers. He is the hot rookie and hired by a top law firm headed by Charles Wheeler (Jason Robards). Andy is also gay and dying from AIDS. When the physical signs of the disease begin to manifest themselves, the firm gets cold on Andy and he is out of a job. They tell him it is because he has an attitude problem and his work is mediocre, but Andy knows it is more personal than that. After no other law firm will take his case for unfair dismissal, his last resort is old adversary Joe Miller (Denzel Washington). Joe, a homophobe with an innate fear of AIDS, is reluctant to take the case also because of his personal reasons, but after...

...INTRODUCTION LGBT rights have been a hot topic in India during the last few months due to the Supreme Court of India‘s decision of recriminalizing gay sex. The issue of gay rights is very cloudy in our great nation. Most of this is due to the problems with the issue, the reasons for controversy, and the pros and cons of the issue. First of all, both sides have too many problems with gay rights for there to be a common ground on the issue. The biggest problem we find with the whole thing is the problem is not just fought by words, but also by physical means. Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people frequently face violence motivated by their sexuality or gender identity. Violence may be executed by the state, as in laws prescribing corporal punishment for homosexual acts or by individuals engaging in intimidation, mobbing, assault, or lynching. Violence targeted at people because of their perceived sexuality can be psychological or physical and can extend to murder. These actions may be motivated by homophobia, lesbophobia, biphobia, transphobia, and may be influenced by cultural, religious, or political biases. Currently, homosexual acts are legal in almost all Western countries, and in many of these countries violence against LGBT people is classified as a hate crime, which such violence being often connected with conservative or religious leaning ideologies which condemn homosexuality, or being perpetrated by individuals who associate homosexuality to being weak...

...become more and more unsettled and has met a man in a gay bar he feels he could be happy with him. He is afraid to tell his wife because he does not want to break the family up. He is worried that he will lose his children’s love and his parents respect, and that his colleagues and patients will be unhappy working with and being treated by a gay man? 1. What do you think he should do? I think that aurel should tell his wife first as she is his partner and they have children together, she might be upset or angry that she has been lied to and that she is going to lose her husband who she loves and has spent her life with but if she does love aurel she should be accepting of his decision and not necessarily help but just be there for him, after all they are married and in a close personal relationship. He should then move on to tell his parents and see how they react, hopefully they are accepting and still see him as their son and help him through this stage in his life as it will be stressful, his parents could have many emotions about their son being gay but as he is their son and they love him they will have to learn to live with it. When aurel tell his children he should be prepared for anything as they are young children they may not be as accepting as they would be if they were older, they could also be very angry about him lying to their mother for years, when she could have started a life with someone who isn’t gay, however aurel will have feelings for his wife and...

...Testing a theory A coalition of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights organizations commended the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) today for announcing important changes to the way in which the “abstinence-only-until marriage” program will be administered. The coalition includes national LGBT organizations working on youth issues, including the Family Equality Council; Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN); National Center for Transgender Equality; National Coalition for LGBT Health; National Gay and Lesbian Task Force; Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) National; and The Trevor Project. The changes, which roll back the draconian and profoundly anti-LGBT ways in which the program was run during the Bush administration, will allow states to choose which sections of the program they will highlight and allow them to fund programs utilizing mentoring, counseling and adult supervision programs. In addition, the changes highlight the unique impact these programs have on LGBT youth so that states can work to lessen the harm caused, and they require programs to provide information that is "medically accurate," meaning it cannot be based on unproven or false information. "This is a major step in the right direction for all families. We applaud HHS and urge Congress to finally end destructive abstinence-only programs. All children deserve science-based education programs that are inclusive of everyone...

...International Journal of Lesbian, Gays, Bisexual, and Transgender Studies Morphological Analysis of Gay’s Spoken Discourse ARIEL B. LUNZAGA abl.slsu.to@gmail.com HERMABETH O. BENDULO VIOLETA B. FELISILDA SOUTHERN LEYTE STATE UNIVERSITY Philippines Abstract The language of gays known as gayspeak has now earned respect from the community and observably been infused in the mainstream language of the society. Language is evolving and with its changing nature, existing language needs to be documented for posterity reasons. Gayspeak is not an exemption. It has to be analyzed especially its morphology. This study focused on the morphological analysis of the language of gays who were studying at SLSUTomas Oppus in SY 2009-2010. Specifically, it identified the common vocabulary of local gays and the corresponding meanings through a self-administered questionnaire and an informal conversation. Based from the information provided by 20 purposively selected college gays, it was learned that gayspeak is simply an adaptation of the mainstream language like English, Filipino, and Cebuano. For purposes of shielding from the chasms of the heterosexuals, gays construct their language through simple reversal, syllabic reversal, simple reversal with affixation, clipping with affixation, straight words with affixation, and connotation through images. It was concluded that the spoken discourse of college gays in the campus violates the rules of English grammar yet used by gays for purposes of expressing...

...Why hasn't LGBT marriage been accepted in some countries yet ? Introduction LGBT has always been a familiar social issue. I am sure that everyone knows about LGBT but most of people do not really understand the meaning of it. LGBT stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender. Same - sex marriage has been seen as a sign of Satan. Some people think that it is a disgusting thing and against moral. They make up lots of reason even the nonsensical thing like if homosexuality deserves equal protection, then, logically, deviant practices such as incest or bestiality must be allowed the same equal protection. That is so psychotic. In the past, the LGBT marriage issue is quite sensitive to talk about but nowadays human start to open their heart,...

...LGBT Equality {Name} DeVry University LGBT Equality Rights for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) people in the United States are comprised of a patchwork of laws in all levels of government. Currently, there are six states, plus Washington D.C., where same-sex marriages are legal. (Hamilton, 2012) Maryland has laws that recognize same-sex marriages performed in other states, but does not allow same-sex marriages to occur in the state.(Davis & Wagner, 2010) Twenty-one states, plus Washington D.C., have laws against discrimination based on sexual orientation or identity.(Repa, n.d.) Adoption policies also vary greatly from state to state. LGBT rights have taken part of the fight that republicans and religious fundamentalists have waged against LGBT people and women’s rights that has swept the county in the last couple of years. Although some people believe that LGBT people should not receive equal marriage or adoption rights, there are many reasons to extend those basic rights to LGBT couples. In the United States, there is a patchwork of laws regarding LGBT rights. In fact, there is a Supreme Court judgment in 2003 that started the move towards equality. The landmark case was the Lawrence v. Texas, which struck down sodomy laws in Texas. This, by extension, invalidated other similar laws in 13 other states and territories. (Lithwick, 2012) In 2009, President Obama passed the Mathew Shepard act.(Weiner, 2010) This act brought about one of the largest...

...1. Introduction Philadelphia—the first Hollywood film to acknowledge HIV and homosexuality stars Tome Hanks in 1993. This film shows discrimination in hiring and firing, which are disability and sexual orientation. Discrimination exists in all places, at all times, not just in Canada. Even so, people still feel confused about the bounds of hiring and firing. The definition of this phenomenon is the different treatment of two equally qualified individuals on account of their age, gender and so on. In order to protect the rights of employees, governments establish laws and regulations to restrain employers’ behaviors. At the same time, moral standards can be a looser and more elastic limitation and judgments on people’s actions. To simplify, laws are clear rules written on paper, but moral standards are not clear and depend on different people. So, what is the boundary of employment? My answer is that law is the basic standard, and moral is the justice, and whether there are discriminations or not should be measured both sides—the employees’ and employers’. 2. Kinds of Discriminations Age discrimination One of the global issues is the rapidly aging population. There will be 77.3 million people with a life expectancy of 83 years, which is an estimate by the U.S. Disease Control Center 2010, for the first wave of baby-boomer generation from 1946 to 1964. At the same time, people are working longer than before, because people are living a healthier and better...

...Intersectionality and Stereotypes Social Work 305 The University Dr. Sharon White said, “Intersectionality encompasses how one’s complex mix of identities influence the way an individual participates in, and is affected by society”. After watching the movie, Crash, I found it fairly difficult to analyze just one of the topics discussed in class. In many instances, race, class, gender and sexuality seem to intersect in our daily lives more often than we (as in one individual) may realize. It is important that we pay attention to this as we begin to form our opinions of people and situations. I have found that stereotypes are often the foundation for our beliefs and fears; however, there are always unknown factors that contribute to the formation of these stereotypes. As Crash opens, a black man, Detective Graham Waters, speaks about the nature of Los Angeles and the need for people to crash into each other. “It's the sense of touch. In any real city, you walk, you know? You brush past people, people bump into you. In L.A., nobody touches you. We're always behind this metal and glass. I think we miss that touch so much, that we crash into each other, just so we can feel something” (Crash). This was a great quote for me as I took the word crash as a metaphor for intersectionality. The metal and glass symbolize a shield or façade an individual has up. This shield provides protection and safety but it also prevents the outside from seeing what’s...

...Writer Foster Friess once said, "If we really want to cherish freedom, people who want to believe that same-sex parenting should take place, they have a right to believe that, and people who want to believe it's inappropriate, we should not demonize those people. Homosexual parenting has had a huge increase in the last five years. As of February 2013, more than 111,000 same-sex couples are raising an estimated 220,000 children (Gates 1). Although the recent gains in homosexual marriage are starting to be accepted more, the stigmatism associated with homosexual parenting still exists. People say things like it is immoral and that it will turn the child gay. Some people even say that it confuses the child's outlook on masculinity and femininity....

...Queer has become an umbrella term “that is a fluid label that acknowledges queers as different without specifying how or in what context”(PFLAG). The term queer has changed through time, similar to the change that has occurred in television as new characters are developed creating a diverse cast. Queers have been newly broadcasted in media. When queers were first portrayed in media, gay men were popular sidekicks in multiple sitcoms. For example , Will and Grace, used both gay men as best friends ,who offered comedic relief in awkward situations. There has been a shift in the portrayal of the LGBTQ community after Ellen DeGeneres revealed her own sexuality through her character Ellen Morgan in her sitcom Ellen. After Ellen’s coming out episodes emerged, the LGBTQ community was no longer in the background and now “gays are witty sidekicks, girls next door, doctors and lawyers, city officials, and teenage experimenters, garnering Emmys, accolades, and great ratings as they invade the family home through the ubiquitous tube”(Skerski 365). Ellen helped transition the role of queers from witty supporters, to significant serious characters. She made “sexual orientation [be the only] important aspect of her life, not the sole purpose of it”(Gibson, Alexander, Meem 310). Media has come a long way in the 20th century but many still don’t agree with the way queers are portrayed through media. Although shows have changed, people are still not satisfied in the way queers are viewed...
