Milk

...Be Heroic, Make a Point Have you ever imagined living in a world so cruel that a man or a woman could not become a political leader? Harvey Milk is a prime example of this situation. Based on a true story, Milk is a 2008 film directed by Gus Van Sant on an American gay activist who struggles for gay rights. It all started in the 1970’s when he lived in New York opening a camera shop, Castro Camera, which becomes the store for San Francisco’s increasing gay community. Throughout the process Milk organizes gays to pull together upon political coalition. Milk moves to San Francisco while running for office with his significant other Scott Smith as his campaign director. Harvey Milk runs several times for the San Francisco Board of Supervisors and finally wins. Milk became the first openly gay man to be selected in politics. I agree with this inspiring film on a gay activist with passion who came through showing the world it doesn’t matter who you are, become what you want. As I compared my life to the film, I realized I have a certain someone that goes through some of the same cruelty day to day. I grew up with a brother who came out when he was a sophomore. This was a big issue where I come from because my town is very stereotyped. I’m from a small town where if you were different from everyone else, you were very easily judged by everything you did. Therefore, it was a very difficult process for my family and I to accept. We all had to cope with the challenges that...

Being Gay in Different Cultures

...Gregory Howard Different Cultures Views on Being Gay When I was younger I was always taught that being homosexual was wrong. Everyone around me told me that they were horrible people that were going to go to hell for their sins. I believed what I was told and for a time I had hate in my heart. I judged these people without even getting to know them. I didn’t give them a chance. As years passed, I grew up and formed opinions of my own about homosexuals. I came to realize that the hate I was taught all those years was wrong. I felt ashamed of treating people badly for something I now know isn’t even their choice. I am now accepting of homosexuals and their way of life. I don’t cast judgment upon them and I believe they should be treated the same as any other person. With my eyes open I now wondered what it was like for people who are gay in different cultures. I know how homosexuals are treated in America. For the most part we as a culture accept them. There will always be ignorant people no matter where you go. But for the mostly America as whole is becoming more and more accepting. In some states gay marriage is even legal. I can only imagine, looking at how far our acceptance has come, one day people will think it’s crazy that gay marriage was once ever illegal anywhere in our country. But what is it like for people who are gay that live in different parts of the world? Is it the same for them as it is in America? I assume unfortunately there is hate anywhere you go...

Homosexuality In James Baldwin's Essay 'Here Be Dragons'

...throughout the course of history. The definition of homosexuality as well as the general attitude towards it shifted rapidly throughout the first half of the twentieth century. Prominent events such as the First and Second World War were instrumental in altering both the definition and attitude of the era. In examining the postwar years, there is a plethora of content regarding the gay resistance movements, development of sexuality theories and even the growing importance of the gay bar scene and the policing that went against it. Though in evaluating the exact impact that these changes had on society, it is best to utilize and critically analyze primary resources such as written diaries and memories of individuals during that time period....

Himophobia

...lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender, There are many homophobia/LGBTQ issues in entertainment. “I can’t think of a time when I’ve seen homophobia on television. But I see it in movies all the time. In an industry so well-populated by gay and lesbian filmmakers and producers, we can do better.” says Kelly Bush Novak. In the film & television industry they don’t address homophobia issues quite often due to being fearful of alienating even a portion of the audience. The hit “Brokeback Mountain” which made about $178 million worldwide are written off as “just luck”. On the other hand, the LGBT representation on tv has evolved drastically. “Over the past few years, we’ve seen LGBT representation on TV evolve to more accurately reflect its audience and our culture, with diverse programs like ‘Empire’ and ‘How to Get Away With Murder’ also becoming some of TV’s biggest hits,” Ellis says. “The film industry, on the other hand, lags years behind — and must improve its track record on diverse representations if it is to stay relevant to a wide audience.”. Films are nothing like television when it comes to supporting the LGBTQ community. Films would rather treat the gay community as if it doesn’t even exist meanwhile television aren’t afraid to address the group and issues they face. The LGBT community aren’t quite accepted in the music industry. You rarely hear about the LGBT community in any type of music in a good way. "I used to be scared to talk to a gay...

Gay Linggo

...WHAT IS GAY LINGO or Swardspeak (also known as "Bekimon" and "gay lingo") is an argot or cant slang derived from Taglish (Tagalog-English code-switching) and used by a number of homosexuals in the Philippines Sward speak uses elements from Tagalog, English, Spanish, and some from Japanese, as well as celebrities' names and trademark brands, giving them new meanings in different contexts. It is largely localized within gay communities, making use of words derived from the local languages or dialects, including Cebuano, Hiligaynon, Waray, and Bicolano The term beki mon (beki is a colloquial word for "gay") took off from the growing popularity of the jejemon subculture, which refers to those who deliberately exaggerate ordinary words by adding or subtracting letters, or by using a mixture of upper-case and lower-case letters, in written communication. Consciously or unconsciously, even straights or heterosexuals have peppered their vocabulary with words traceable to gay speak. Mention the word anech (from “ano” or “what” in English with anesh, anik, anikla as varieties) to anyone in the metropolitan areaand in all likelihood, the person being spoken to will reply as casually. There are also thefamiliar words chika, chuva, and charot. Abstract – The language of gays known as gay speak has now earned respect from the community and observably been infused in the mainstream language of the society. Language is evolving and with its changing nature, existing language needs to be...

Crocodile LGBT Analysis

...unnoticed. “When gays and lesbians do appear on screen, it is more often than not in ways that uphold stereotypical notions, such as the ‘pansy’ male or the ‘hardboiled’ woman,” is how Mangin explains this dilemma. This statement holds truth, but it is only the beginning of addressing the problem. Society has deemed it necessary to discriminate against this community, instead of accepting them, and treating them how they should be treated; like normal people, since that is what they are, of course. unjust way the LGBTQ+ community...

The Sexual Identity of Gay Asian Men

...Sexual Identity of Gay Asian Men We live in a world wherein we are controlled by our society. Society dictates what can and cannot be done, what is right and wrong, what is to be accepted and what is to be shunned. In our world today, we feel the need to conform to the norm, to feel as though we somehow belong, that we are a part of something bigger – that we belong to a community. In our world today, we are also encouraged to set ourselves apart from everyone else, to be our unique; our own person, but being different is something that is not generally accepted, the very notion that society brings forth, that we need to be our own person, society also contradicts because you can only be so different – it is as if there is a certain level of difference that can be tolerated, and anything beyond that comfort zone is deemed to be wrong. Today, it has become evident that more people have gathered the courage to defy society’s comfort zones and rise above them. Now, we see an increasing number of homosexuals that are becoming more open about their sexuality, but the question there is, are they coming out of the closet explicitly? Or is it simply an implied action? In the Philippines, we have local scenes that vividly showcase homosexual pride. We see this through the pubs that welcome gay acts to perform every now and then, the parlors whose staff consists primarily of gay stylists, even through the media we see how homosexuality is showcased through the rise of gay showbiz personalities...

Gay Marriage

...Love Is Blind: Gay marriage has been the topic of discussion in recent years. It has been broadcast on news stations and printed in magazines all across America. Each publication has displayed a different point of view. The discussions mostly have been about how it affects our world and our economy. There are many ways that gay marriage affects both our world and our economy. Gay marriage is not only affecting our economy, but is also protected by our government. Same-sex couples are also better off. There’s three main ways that gay parents affect children. They affect the child’s growth in their social and academic competence rate, they make amazing parents, and the children develop emotions that most kids don’t have. “The kids typically develop in ways that cannot be distinguished from their peers raised by heterosexual parents” (Davis). The affect it has on the child’s social and academic competence rate is outstanding. “According to a study published in Pediatrics, they found that children with lesbian parents have a higher social and academic rating; than those with heterosexual parents” (Gartrell & Bos, Pediatrics). "in fact, growing up with parents who are lesbian or gay may confer some advantages to children. They have been described as more tolerant of diversity and more nurturing toward younger children than children whose parents are heterosexual" (Davis). They make outstanding parents. Most foster kids just really need nothing more than a loving home, with two...

Same Sex Marriage Laws

...Analysis Living in the information age, news can travel around the world in seconds. The first same sex marriage between Marcia Hams and Susan Shepherd just hit its ten year anniversary this month. In prior years before Massachusetts began allowing same sex marriages, passing information around the world could be slow. As same sex marriages are becoming more mainstream throughout our nation, the rate in which news can be relayed has also increased drastically (Anniversary,2014). The world revers movie stars, television stars, singers, basically anybody that is labeled a “star” can be influential in not only how people want to look, but also how they feel. Television has been a juggernaut in establishing a foothold into same sex marriages. The correlation between the ever rising amount of lesbian and gay relationships on television and the growing percentage of overall acceptance of same sex relationships in our nation cannot be denied (Becker,2011). In 2003, American television had a total of twenty-six gay and lesbian characters on television. With that only thirty-three percent of America’s citizens showed acceptance of that lifestyle. In the following five years the acceptance level rose and fell, the same with the numbers of same sex relationships on television (Becker,2011). In 2009 a television show depicting two gay men in a relationship started airing. Called Modern Family, the actors Jesse Tyler Ferguson, who plays Mitchell...

Lgbt Equality

...LGBT Equality With the recent legalization of gay marriage in California and Maryland the ever-present debate about same sex marriage has been intensified. It seems that every year there are a couple of events that make some people celebrate the progress in the fight for equality, and others disapprove of these happenings and say that decisions like these will take the world to chaos and disaster. The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community has always fought for equality and, in recent years, there have been many milestones in the fight towards equality. Nevertheless, there is still a lot of opposition to the idea of marriage equality and LGBT parenting. Religious beliefs are one of the primary reasons for people to oppose the idea of gay marriage and ideas of homosexuality being natural in general. In addition, strong ties between Religious institutions and governments create an environment where it is hard for members of the LGBT community to get the same legal standing as their heterosexual counterparts. In many countries homosexuality and acts of homosexuality are considered crimes. In some countries, like Iran and Saudi Arabia, being gay is punishable by death (Foreign Policy). People have the right to marry the man or woman they love and have a family with them. Unfortunately, this is a right that is reserved for heterosexual couples, mostly because of religious mentalities and traditions. Governments should legalize same sex marriage and adoption, because...

America is the only place in the world where freedom reigns everywhere in the country. But, Why is it that two men or women who love each other can not get married?. Gay Marriage

...Gay Marriage Gay marriage is a very controversial issue, though I know where I stand having a gay sibling , I fully support two people of the same sex being able to get married. Through my personal experiences and research, I can support my views on this subject. Many people are against gay marriage because they think that being homosexual is wrong, evil or it’s a sin. Others believe that accepting gay couples getting married would be a threat to the society’s values and weaken what marriage is defined as. Many years ago, African Americans, for example, did not have the same equality like white people did I think gay marriage has a similar issue. We are all humans and we all should have the same equality and right no matter if we are gay, straight, white, black,Latin, Asian or any other race,Therfore gay marriage should be legal. Many young children in America are killing themselves for being victim of abuse, bulling or discrimination in school from other kids that believe that being gay is wrong . Bullying is an intentional aggressive behavior that is often applied to people that have or express a different behavior or preferences that are not consider “normal” or average behavior than most of the people. They may be bullied for different reasons, by the way they dress, how they speak, or even because of the race they are. There are many types of bulling physical bullying (punching or hitting). Place Verses Identity

...important in creating identity specially when we examine the making of a sexual orientation identity such as gay people. This article shows how the elements of identity or I should say the characteristics of identity define the gay community of West Hollywood. West Hollywood in California has become one of the largest gay communities in the world. The people living in this outlined community are defined as gay people because they have been or identify themselves with the seven elements that identify gay people. These characteristics are defined in creativity, aesthetic sensibility, orientation towards entertainment or consumption, progressiveness, responsibility, maturity, and centrality. West Hollywood reinforces and welcomes individuals with these characteristics in lifestyle. I am not saying every gay person possesses these seven elements, however West Hollywood has become the one place where persons who have some or all of these characteristics seem to roam or go to this particular area because it has defined itself as a gay community. Many gay men have moved here specifically as it has been defined as a place where they can actually, "come out" without being ridiculed. They can be accepted here for who they are and what they have been defined as because they were born with these elements. They can use this place because it has been defined by the same elements that define gay people. The media in West Hollywood developed the connection between place and identity by characterizing...

Gay Adoption

...Gay adoption A multiracial family is made by David and ralph gay couple with three adopted children. For four years we were struggling with the systems in Los Angeles County and in Santa Barbara County. From now, if people ask me ask about gay adoption, I will absolutely say “yes” and strongly support gay adoption. Between 1 million to 6 million children in the U.S. are being raised by committed lesbian or gay couples. In those children, research show has not found a single study showing that children of gay families to be disadvantage. Moreover, a lot of gay parents raise children as successful people. Homosexual parents are also offer safe home, good environment to their children. Children are raised in gay families can be just as successful as those with heterosexual parents, in some way they may have advantage. Opponents of gay families often argue that such families produce children that are less successful, because children of gay families are more likely to be gay and believe that children raised by homosexual parents are placed at risk for metal, emotional. Being raised by gay parent means that the family unit has an unbalanced ratio of male and female role models in the home environment, you could reasonably expect that this imbalance would spread into the parents circle of friends and the people that the family socialise with on a regular basis. But I do not think those factors are not necessarily true in the real world. Gay families are often more successful...

Why Do Students Speak Gay Lingo?

...Why do students speak Gay lingo? For Heterosexual students The aim of the speakers is to be au courant. Heterosexual students want to show that they are well-informed in this genre of speaking. They want to let people know that they also have the capacity to speak gay lingo eventhough they are not inside the world of the homosexual where it is spoken. Also, their intention is to be modern. Since social media has made swardspeak popular, students are exposed to it and thus influencing them to use it. Students who use swardspeak want to be updated. They aim to be conscious of the latest and newest word of the twists and turns of the new verbal acrobatic act. According to a Philippine Star journalist, Samantha King, “In the world of language, young people who find it too torturous to expound on ideas simply invent new words — or butcher the meanings of old ones instead.”. Students will never be loss for words when they got a universal substitute for just about every noun, adverb or adjective in existence--- like the use of the word “chorva.” This is very popular among some students. They use it when they lack of the right words to say. Some words from the gay lingo are used by the students as fillers when they have to express something and they can’t or won’t find the formal words to say. With gay lingo, students can speak easier. They can express themselves easily now that they have gay lingo. Based on the college experience of Eunice Beatrice H. Braga, a magna cum laude of...
