VARK Analysis Paper

VARK is a model developed by Neil Fleming in 1987, to help students and others learn more about their individual learning preferences (Fleming & Mills, 2011). This model determines styles that help people build useful strategies for learning and enhancing communication skills. The assessment is done by completing 16 multiple-choice questionnaire. The answers determine a persons learning preferences. The styles determined are Visual, Aural, Read/Write, and Kinesthetic, or Multimodal, which is a combination of many preferences. After taking the VARK questionnaire you’ll be provided with a score divided into each style. The writer of this paper is multimodal like the majority of people whom take the questionnaire. Multimodal learners simply have more than one preferences of learning. Majority of people have a multimodal learning preferences when making decisions regarding learning.
A method to learning and decision-making are seen in two groups with an unclear margin among them. Some have preferred ways to learn that looks at the information that has to be learned or conveyed to an alternative person and decide the mode they think is best for that circumstance. These people are found to be more context specific because they choose the mode that best suits their need. For example, if they are legalizing an important document they change on their read/write preference. If they are learning a physical skill the may use their Kinesthetic approach to work with it, hands on and becoming more comfortable with it. The second group of people in the multimodal VARK category uses a whole sense approach by using a variety of their modes in combination to make decisions, to learn and present materials to others (Fleming, 2011). The Multimodal learning preference refers to the utilization of multiple learning strategies which consists of Aural, Visual, Read-Write and kinesthetic learning preferences (ARK). Statistically, 60% of any population is believed to utilize multiple preferences for learning strategy.
