...January 24, 2007 Sociology-Online What we see as a community today was not how it was seen in the past. In the past the community was seen as individuals belonging to an association in which the goal was not to worry so much about their self-interests, but more of the association as a whole. This type of setting was termed Gemeinschaft by Ferdnand Tonnies (1957). To go into more detail, Gemeinschaft, which means community in German, tends to see the community in a pre-modern society where inside the community everyone knew one another, looked out for one another and had a shared belief system, such as religious communities (Wikipedia). Gemeinschaft can be summed up by saying that they value strong personal relationships, strong families and a sense of loyalty towards the community. As we entered the 20th century, we saw a breakdown of the community into a more self-centered mindset. This is known as Gesellschaft, translated means society, where the main focus of the individual is not so much the association or the community but that of ones-self. As the post-modern society developed, people started to think more of individual goals such as where their standing was in the community or that they may not care deeply for the community but it is in their best interest to care. ...Introduction 1.1 Problem definition Any discussion of higher Education in different countries needs to be conducted within the context of the overall perception of a country’s culture, society, history, salary and intellect. These influences are the foundation of the education in a country. Due to these different influences every country has a different understanding of education. I will also concentrate on the influence of culture on education in China and in the United States (U.S.) with special emphasis on Hofstede’s Cultural Dimensions, because culture and history can lead the way in understanding the differences among student’s higher education. 1.2 Objectives The paper investigates the differences between the education in China and the U.S. against the background of dramatical differences in culture and history. First the country-specific Cultural Dimensions by Hofstede need to be elaborated to reveal a basic approach for the understanding of a nation’s culture. First, each of the cases is historically unique and interesting – they can all stand on their own without need for further interpretation. Second, these cases contain important clues and guidelines which point to a more general theory of technology and sociocultural change. They do not go far enough to allow us to frame up such a theory, but they provide the inductive impetus for relating these examples to the wider system of theory building in anthropology. In the first edition of this book we were not yet ready to elaborate even the outlines of such a theory, but the ensuing 15 years have given us plenty of new materials, as well as general growth in various aspects of theoretical social science. We can now offer a theoretical synthesis, and show how this synthesis can lead directly to the testing of specific hypotheses.
