...SURVIVAL GUIDE GEN 105 DUE January 11, 2009 What personal action plans would I develop to achieve success for? Following topics: o Using Axia's Educational Resources o Upholding Academic Honesty o Setting and Achieving Goals o Managing Time Wisely o Fostering Reading Comprehension and Retention o Applying Personality and Learning Styles The personal action plan I would develop for using Axia's Educational Resources to achieve success would be to construct a hard copy overview of all the resources and refer to it during my course work. By constructing this outline of sorts I will be providing myself with a reference that will show me where to go for the specific project information I am in need of at that time. Axia provides files I can download to my computer as tools for my coursework enhancement such as: “Microsoft Internet Explorer / Outlook Express, Adobe Reader® 6.0, Macromedia Flash Player, Macromedia Shockwave Player, Microsoft Office Online File Converters and Viewers, Netscape and University of Phoenix Custom Screensaver.” I also have the advantage of the Universities Library for research of all kinds and depths. The Library is housed with article databases, books, journals, testing aids and the Library Tutorial that is the key to the Library’s use. While I use the Library’s resources searches for specific information can be made by using Boolean and wildcard logic to isolate my search needs in different databases such as Thomson Gale PowerSearch and EBSCOhost...

...I have recently discussed with some co-workers that I will be attending school again. When they asked me where was I going, my reply was the University of Phoenix. My co-workers looked at me funny, and I knew exactly what they were thinking. I told them that I was going to school online. They immediately were intrigued by this and started asking questions. Is it harder online? “No,” it’s easy. You just have to have a routine. Everything is done in weekly blocks. There is a calendar that shows exactly what assignments need to be done within the week. You see all the course materials, and even an online library. There is no need to even buy textbooks. How does the assignments work? All the assignments are accomplished through “Forums,” similar to Blogs. The teacher posts a discussion questions and other assignments in the forum. All the classmates respond to the discussion questions and you receive feedback from the other students. All the responses thread onto each other creating what is called, “Threaded Discussion”. Are your conversations Live? “Well,” Probably not, but it is possible. What is great about forums is I can post my responses at anytime of the day from any computer. All the students post their assignments and Discussion Questions when they find it convenient for them, just as long as they are not late turning in their assignments. This is called, “Asynchronous Communication” How do you have time for school? The flexibility of this Asynchronous...

...Analyzing Internet Sources What did you learn? I learned that most of the websites that students overlook are actually the websites that are the most helpful. Many students use search websites such as: Google and yahoo to research information for their paper. Most websites that look like they have less information are mostly overlooked because of the glances. Student should examine all parts of the internet when using it as a research source. I’ve learned to always examine the URL, the synopsis, bookmark sites and research lists. Another great source of the internet is the local or school library. Many students including me overlook the library because it’s not convenient as the internet. The library takes up too much time versus the internet with all today’s new technology. I have overlooked researching at the library many times because the library takes up to much time and the internet requires less time. What did you not learn? I did not learn how to start a simple research using the internet or using textbooks from the library. I personally think using the internet as a research source is somewhat very difficult than actually going into the library. Most students don’t realize a bad site, the ones that ask you to register with them for more information. I also didn’t learn how to use the internet or the library as a research source without plagiarism even though I know. Many students think its okay to copy straight from the book or internet. Plagiarism is not taught...

...Using Axia’s Educational Resources The University Library is ‘one-stop shopping’ for all research needed throughout a college experience. The option to download lessons to a computer or portable devise will be a valuable time saver as I progress further in to the program. Axia has made navigating the university library very easy by making everything easy to find. The most important tool is the Center for Writing Excellence (CWE). The links are there to help expand college writings; for example, WritePoint, Plagiarism Checker, and Tutorials and Guides. Also found in the Library Resources are many resources that have accurate articles and information that I can cite as noted in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (6th edition). They are broken out in major and specialized articles. The major database can be used for broad searches and the specialized database can be used for specific searches. Upholding Academic Honesty According to www.dictionary.com (2009), plagiarism is the use or close imitation of the language and thoughts of another author and the representation of them as one's own original work. This includes self-plagiarism. It is school policy that all works be the student’s own original thoughts unless clearly cited. The University Library has tutorials on how to cite correctly in academic works. Plagiarism is a serious offence that carries serious consequences; for example, failure, suspension, or expulsion. ...Gen 105 Week 1 DQ 1 What were your initial thoughts on distance learning before you started your program? Why did you choose distance learning over a traditional face to face learning environment? In what ways your view of distance learning change since you started your classes? My initial thoughts on distance learning before I started my program were a great way to obtain a degree and stay still in the comfort of your own home. A way to be successful in your career if you have a busy life and traditional face to face learning is not an option for you. I decided to choose distance learning over a traditional face to face learning environment because it is a better technique to manage your time between work, family and school. I can set my own time for education and still have ability to manage my time wisely. With 24 hours I can log in and submit my home work any time, if compare to traditional face to face learning environment I have to be in class at certain time and if I do not show up for the class. I will be marked absence. But as distance learning there is no set time that you have to be online and all you need is basic knowledge of internet. Ways my view of distance learning change since I started my classes is that I have made the correct decision in pursuing my education. First I was skeptical about distance learning programs because I was not familiar with the online classroom, how to submit assignment and how to reach your instructor. After visiting the University...

...CheckPoint: Setting Goals My first personal goal is to graduate with my Bachelors degree. That is a big deal to me. I am the oldest to my family and the only one of my siblings to not graduate college. To do this, my short term goals are to first get my associates degree. My deadline is to do this by the end of 2011. To do this, I must pass each one of my classes. I must set a deadline to accomplish this by the end of each class. I also must study hard to learn the material. If I do that, I will get my degree in 4-5 years. My second goal is to start a family. My wife and I cannot have children of our own so we will have to adopt. To do this there are some classes we will have to take as well as inspections we will have to pass through our state. We have chosen to be foster parents. I cannot place a deadline on when we will actually be able to adopt a child because that is out of our hands but we can complete the other steps. We have decided to have all of the classes we need to have completed by the end of next year. We next wish to have the home study finished by May of 2012. We want to buy a house before that and we are saving up a down payment. We are on track to be able to purchase a home by October of 2011. By doing these things, we hope to be parents before we are each...

Last but not least I would let my interview know I am eager to please and I am a hard...
