Existence of the Gender Wage Gap
Does the gap between women’s wages and men’s wages actually exist? By using a ratio, the pay difference between men and women is measured in the gender wage gap. In the webpage “What is the Gender Pay Gap and is it Real?”, economists Elise Gould, Jessica Schieder, and Kathleen Geier state, “The gender wage gap is a measure of pay disparity between men and women.” (Gould et al.). To measure this gap, a ratio is calculated through the division of a year-round, full-time working woman’s pay by a year-round, full-time working man’s pay (Gould et al.). The ratio is presented in terms of a dollar or as a percentage (Gould et al.). The men and women used can vary; however, to find the overall ratio, median and “typical” male and female’s results are used. According to “What is the Gender Pay Gap and is it Real?”, results can be misrepresented due to the various wages average paid salary …show more content…
Instead of using median wages, average wages are used to include techniques used for relationships between variables (Gould et al.). When the adjusted wage gap was complete, the gap grew from women getting paid 17.9 percent less than men, to women getting paid 21.7 percent less than men. “The measured penalty actually increases when accounting for these influences because women workers, on average, have higher levels of education than men,” states Gould. When females and males with the same occupation, level of education, level of experience, and work hours were compared, the women were still paid less (Gould). However, the percentage shrunk to women getting paid 13.5 percent less, and when more extensive research was done, the fully adjusted gap (the situation just explained previously) showed a percentage of 8.4 (Gould et
