FOCUS: Do pre-school aged children pick toys that relate to their gender?
BACKGROUND:
Children are born without the knowledge of gender roles. It is something that is taught to them. As they grow, they become more familiar with who they are and their gender. When a child reaches an age to choose a toy out of many toys to play with, what do they choose? Kohlberg’s study (1966) found when children can identify themselves correctly as male or female, they begin to value activities that are consistent with their gender identity. (Smetana. Letourneau. 1984) There are many theories regarding gender learning and the differences in children’s toy preferences. Per Liben and Bigler “a gender schema can be considered …show more content…
The number of children during my observations were between 5-6. I chose to observe this class because I thought it would be a place where there weren’t too many children and my hope was that each child would think for themselves in toy choice versus following the rest of the group in choosing what to do. This setting was a good place for a naturalistic observation of the children. Studying a smaller group also gave me the opportunity to observe each child’s actions individually within the group setting. The preschool room at the church is equipped with a variety of toys, gender-neutral toys as well as toys that would be labeled as boy or girl toys. In one earlier study, children's play with selected masculine, feminine, and neutral toys was observed during free play in the day care center which the children attended daily. The children (particularly those ages 2 or older) played with toys that were stereotyped for their own gender more than with neutral toys or those stereotyped for the other gender (O’Brien & Huston. …show more content…
The boys I observed chose toys that were associated with their gender, cars, dinosaurs, action figures. The girls were a little more diverse. Two little girls from the observations, Presley and Mailey, both chose to play with toys that were considered gender neutral. Presley did engage in playing with toys that were related to her gender two out of the three observations, she also engaged in playing with gender neutral toys, such as the puzzles and the books and attempting to play the harp with the class helper. Mailey engaged in gender neutral toys more often than the toys that would be labeled as girl toys. She played with the dinosaurs, building blocks, the school bus, puzzles and played the harp with the classroom assistant. The other girls I observed during observation all chose to play with the gender-neutral toys outside, but once inside where there were gender related toys, they chose toys such as dolls, the playhouse that replicated a real house and stayed engaged with those toys for the observational period.
