Genentech Case Study: Blue White Screening

Genentech was on the right path. 2 new scientists joined in. Arthur Riggs, a molecular biologist and his colleague, Keiichi Itakura, a Japanese organic chemist. Both were at City of Hope National Medical Center in Duarte, California. Herbert Heyneker was a postdoctoral student who joined Boyer lab in the fall of 1975. Itakura was responsible for getting the synthetic DNA, Herbert was responsible of splicing the fragment into a plasmid and then cloning it inside the bacterium. The results of their experiments were outstanding. The protein was biologically functional and this was determined through an assay now known as blue-white screening. In the press coverage, Boyer was very exciting to talk about bacterial factories from which huge quantities …show more content…
The main aim of this experiment was to see if bacteria can actually produce a protein from a higher organism and to understand its gene regulation and expression. They applied to NIH for $40,000 as funds to go ahead with the project in E.coli. The application was rejected. They convinced Swanson for the experiment who reluctantly gave in eventually. They signed an agreement with City of Hope providing parameters for royalty payments and property protection. $35,000 was granted and Genentech would get license of those patents and City of Hope would get 2% royalties on the products sold. Thomas Kiley from Lyon & Lyon an IP firm, negotiated the agreement. Richard Scheller, a graduate student at California Institute of Technology was the means of their third collaboration with Caltech. Many complexities arose and City of Hope filed a case in 1999 claiming that Genentech owed them around $500 million worth royalties. It was a sad end to their partnership. By February, Swanson had raised $850,000 and the somatostatin research could start. Robberto Crea, an Italian saw Genentech as a supporting factor to his postdoctoral fellowship at City of …show more content…
Venture capital was one way to sought to, for long term financing, by either public stock offering or acquisition. For the drug to reach market, they would require the back-up from a pharmaceutical company. Along with Boyer and Perkins, Swanson approached a Danish company, Novo Industri, but was let down. Another company, Hoechst, a German pharmaceuticals and chemical manufacturer gave the same response. Elli Lily was another company ruling over 80% of North America’s insulin market, and they were interested. By march 1978, Swanson acquired $950,000 at $8/share. They finally settled Genentech at the Industrial City, north of Silicon

Biotechnology

...Biotechnology Insulin crystals Biotechnology is the use of living systems and organisms to develop or make useful products, or "any technological application that uses biological systems, living organisms or derivatives thereof, to make or modify products or processes for specific use" (UN Convention on Biological Diversity).[1] Depending on the tools and applications, it often overlaps with the (related) fields of bioengineering and biomedical engineering. For thousands of years, humankind has used biotechnology in agriculture, food production and medicine.[2] The term itself is largely believed to have been coined in 1919 by Hungarian engineer Karl Ereky. In the late 20th and early 21st century, biotechnology has expanded to include new and diverse sciences such as genomics, recombinant gene technologies, applied immunology, and development of pharmaceutical therapies and diagnostic tests.[3] Definitions of biotechnology The concept of 'biotech' or 'biotechnology' encompasses a wide range of procedures (and history) for modifying living organisms according to human purposes — going back to domestication of animals, cultivation of plants, and "improvements" to these through breeding programs that employ artificial selection and hybridization. Modern usage also includes genetic engineering as well as cell and tissue culture technologies. Biotechnology is defined by the American Chemical Society as the application of biological organisms, systems, or processes by various...

Bio-Technology

...INTRODUCTION Biotechnology is one of the innovative branches of science. Biotechnology has created new revolutions in this era by contributing industries, medical sciences, food technologies and genetics. "Biotechnology is basically defined as the use of living organisms, their parts and their biochemical processes for the creation of beneficial products." Bio-technology has its roots in the distant past and has a large, highly profitable, modern industrial outlets of great value to society for e.g. the fermentation, bio-pharmaceutical and food industries. The main reasons must be associated with the rapid advances in molecular biology, in particular, recombinant DNA technology, which is now giving bio-scientists a remarkable understanding and control over biological processes. Some Technologies used in Biotechnology: 1. Bioprocessing technology * The use of bacteria, yeast, mammalian cells and/or enzymes to manufacture products * Large scale fermentation and cell cultures, carried out in huge bioreactors, manufacture useful products * Products: Insulin, vaccines, vitamins, antibiotics, amino acids, etc. 2. Monoclonal antibodies (MCAb) * Definition: Producing antibodies for medicine by cloning a single cell * MCAb are used for Home Pregnancy tests * Used to detect cancer (they bind to tumor cells) * Used to detect diseases in plants and animals and environmental pollutants 3. ...FROM THE AUTHOR OF THE BESTSELLING BIOGRAPHIES OF BENJAMIN FRANKLIN AND ALBERT EINSTEIN, THIS IS THE EXCLUSIVE BIOGRAPHY OF STEVE JOBS. Based on more than forty interviews with Jobs conducted over two years—as well as interviews with more than a hundred family members, friends, adversaries, competitors, and colleagues—Walter Isaacson has written a riveting story of the roller-coaster life and searingly intense personality of a creative entrepreneur whose passion for perfection and ferocious drive revolutionized six industries: personal computers, animated movies, music, phones, tablet computing, and digital publishing. At a time when America is seeking ways to sustain its innovative edge, Jobs stands as the ultimate icon of inventiveness and applied imagination. He knew that the best way to create value in the twenty-first century was to connect creativity with technology. He built a company where leaps of the imagination were combined with remarkable feats of engineering. Although Jobs cooperated with this book, he asked for no control over what was written nor even the right to read it before it was published. He put nothing offlimits. He encouraged the people he knew to speak honestly. And Jobs speaks candidly, sometimes brutally so, about the people he worked with and competed against. His friends, foes, and colleagues provide an unvarnished view of the passions, perfectionism, obsessions, artistry, devilry, and compulsion for control that shaped his approach to business and...
