This article explains how a first grade student after spending the first years of his school in a self-contained classroom. All of the professionals who worked with Jeffery were devoted to help Jeffery succeed in the general education classroom. The team implemented the stages of Magiera-Simmons Quality Indicator Model of Co-Teaching. In stage 1: Planning; all of the professionals who were involved with student agreed to collaborate together. They received support from the school administration who also trusted the service providers as the experts in their field. Stage 2: Professional Development; the teachers and related service providers worked to establish a shared vocabulary and meaning of what co-teaching means. The team reported they were lacking in the area of professional development, yet they supported each other and helped each other …show more content…
For stage 3 the team used the general education teacher’s lesson plans as the driving force for the standards for the student. The team sat down weekly to discuss the lesson goals what the overall goal for the student was during the lesson. This model also included reflection which involved the team reflecting on the lessons with feedback and suggestions from the other service providers. They noted and celebrated his achievements and gains which encouraged the team working and altering the instruction to best meet his needs.
When I taught inclusion, I found it very hard to collaborate with the general education teachers. I felt that myself and the general education teachers put forth an honest effort to collaborate yet have an agreed up time never worked for us, one of us was always called to another meeting. We often discussed lessons in the hallway between classes, at our duty posts, or even in the cafeteria at lunch, the team I worked with
