Genie The Wild Child
After reading the story of Genie the Wild Child my heart truly ached for this child. The abuse this child endured was despicable and cruel and no human being should go through this kind of abuse. Due to the abuse and isolation of this child, she developed a “bunny like” walk, only knew twenty words and had not developed into a normal twelve year old child she looked and acted like she was six years old.
Genie’s had an older brother who was abused as well, but he was rescued by their grandmother who helped him regain his life and move past the physical and mental abuse. Genie also had two other siblings that died at the hands of her parents (one locked in a garage for crying and the other died from RH-blood poisoning right after being born). Genie however was left with her parents and began to suffer mentally and physically. Her behavior was not of a normal 12-13 year old child. She was strapped to an infant’s potty seat during the day and at night she was put in a confined sleeping bag. Her father felt she had special needs and felt restraining Genie was the solution so others would not pick on her or exploit her. How her father handled Genie’s condition did not help her, it only hindered her and made her abnormal. When she would speak, she was beaten so Genie stayed silent in fear of punishment from her father.
Genies father felt she would die young, but agreed to get Genie help if she made it to the age of thirteen. The father reneged on his promise and later committed suicide the day he was supposed to appear in court for abuse charges against him. Her father took a coward way out of paying for his crimes and in my eyes justice was not served for the horrific abuse he placed upon this child.
People who encountered Genie thought she had autism when she went into

Manipulation in Arabian Nights and Days

...The Power of Manipulation In Naguib Mahfouz’s Arabian Nights & Days he addresses the dark shadow of one’s self. In the novel, Mahfouz uses the influence of evil genies to show that a man can be manipulated into corruption. He expresses this through multiple characters that all have the same influence and the same outcome. The result is an exploration of the dark side of identity focusing on the corrupt nature of all mankind. This is shown through characters such as Sanaan al- Gamali, Gamasa al- Bulti and Fadil Sanaan. Sanaan al- Gamali’s will is manipulated into corruption by the power of an evil genie names QumQam. The genie told al-Gamali that he must kill Ali al- Salouli, who is the governor of the quarter, or be killed himself. Al-Gamali agrees out of fear not knowing what he is getting himself into. By agreeing to commit such a crime he reveals his dark side in which cannot be handled. “He went deeper and deeper into a state that became difficult to control” (Mahfouz 17). The mind state that he remains in is almost unrecognizable because it is the opposite of what Sanaan’s usual persona is. “His nature deteriorated as though he were being created anew in a form that was at variance with his old deep-rooted gentleness” (Mahfouz 15). Mahfouz uses the work “anew” to express the extent of the change in Sanaan’s life and “his old deep rooted gentleness” to explain his transformation from his normal self. The new Sanaan is portrayed as the dark and evil side and to what...

Genie

...FILM REVIEW In 1970, a wild child was found in California: a girl of 13 who had been isolated in a small room and had not been spoken to by her parents since infancy. “Genie,” as she was later dubbed to protect her privacy by the psycholinguists, who tested her, could not stand erect. At the time, she was unable to speak: she could only whimper. The case came to light when Genie’s 50 year old mother ran away from her 70 year old husband after a violent quarrel and took the child along. The mother was partially blind and applied for public assistance. The social worker in the welfare office took one look at Genie and called her supervisor, who called the police. Genie was sent to the Los Angeles Children’s Hospital for tests. Charges of wilful abuse were filed against both her parents, according to the Los Angeles Times. On the day he was due to appear in court, however, Genie’s father shot himself to death. He left a note in which he wrote. “The world will never understand.” As a social worker the developmental concerns that would be identified one year after Genie was found are: Unable to form relationships with peers. Extreme infantile noises and behaviours. An example of this was her whimpering and how she touched and felt objects for the first time, moving them closer to her face and lips. No emotions displayed, unable to express emotions. Hoarding liquids. Water temperature disparity. An example of this is the disconnection she has with the hot and cold water...

Genie and Nell

...Nell and Genie Comparison Background Story: * What happened to them? * They were both isolated from the world. In Nell’s case, the isolation was much less severe because she was able to grow on her own. She was more self-sufficient than Genie was. Genie was completely dependent on someone else. She didn’t have the ability to completely grow. * How were they found? * Nell’s mother was found dead one day by the man who was bringing her groceries. That same man found Nell after she made a noise in the back room. He went back to town and told the policeman about her. The doctor (Lovell) followed the policeman and then met Nell. * Genie was found after her mother escaped her house and found the police and brought them back to the house. They found her sitting on a potty chair. * Why were they isolated? * Nell’s mother isolated her and her sister because she was raped when she was younger, and didn’t want her girls to grow up in the same terrible, hateful world that she grew up in. She wanted her girls to be safe. * Genie was isolated because her father thought she was mentally disabled. He didn’t want people to know about her, so he locked her up. * What were the circumstances/details? * Nell was living on her own in the forest in the mountains. She was over twenty years old, and she was able to fend for herself. She chopped wood by herself, so she was strong, she could feed herself, and she was obviously doing well on...

Genie Case

...MKTG577 Case: Genie Model 465 Timothy Flaherty Section 11121 Professor Hale October 6, 2014 Abstract The scenario in this medical devise case revolves around the training of a new sales representative. Specifically, this case addresses the effectiveness of the Sales Manager in dealing with the skill set development of the new salesman in selling the medical devise. This paper addresses the actual process the sales manager uses with the salesman and how it can be improved going forward for the mutual benefit of all stakeholders. The Genie Model 465 Sales Process Analysis Contained below are the case questions to be explored: “How might this sales manager's post-sales coaching session have been improved? What would you have done differently? Please provide your rationale to support your response? Make some recommendations about how the sales manager could have been more effective in his feedback to Joe. What could he have said? How could he have helped Joe during the sales call. Should the sales manager have behaved differently on the call?” My first impression based on the audio comments in the case; suggest to me that the sales manager’s demeanor was terrible. He was negative and talking down to the new representative during his post sales call debriefing. First of all, during the sales call I would have allowed myself to also have an exchange with the lab decision maker if I were the sales manager. It’s silly to be there and say nothing while passing...

Genie Case Study

...A girl named Genie was found in the United States in 1970. Genie's father had kept her locked in a room from the age of 20 months until age 13. Genie was harnessed naked to an infant's potty seat and left alone for hours and days through the years. When she was remembered at night, she was put to bed in a homemade straitjacket. There were no radios or televisions in the house, people spoke in hushed tones, and the only language Genie heard was an occasional obscenity from her father. He hated noise, and if Genie made any sound her father would growl at her like a dog or beat her with a stick. As a result of her confinement, Genie could not walk and her eyes could not focus beyond the boundaries of her room. She was malnourished, incontinent,...

The Two Wish Genie

...smoking. Then I see some kind of genie pop out of my coffee cup. I can tell shes a genie by the funny clothes she has on. She looks at me, smiles, and says that she is here to grant me two wishes. One wish has to be personal but the second one has to be on the behalf of others. I think about my wishes for just a few seconds then they both come to mind. My first wish is my personal wish. I wish that I would win the lottery. Not only win for myself but also for my parents so I could pay them back for everything they’ve done for me. Also I could give some of the money I would win to charities. Also I could use the money for starving kids in other countries. That brings me to my second wish. I would wish that I could stop world hunger. As I say that, the genie looks straight at me and says that she is going to grant both of my wishes. As she says that I’m wondering in my mind why this genie chose me. Why is she giving me the two wishes? I’m not sure if I’ve done anything good in my life so if she actually does grant my wishes then I would become a better person. The genie starts to close her eyes and lifting her arms up in the air. I feel as if the world stopped moving. Then all of a sudden the room is shaking and then the genie was gone. I look on the table and I see a lottery ticket laying there. Is this my chance I’m wondering. I turn on the news just as they are saying the winning ticket numbers. I won! I couldn’t believe that the genie actually made this happen. When...

Genie Wild Child

...1. Genie gave researchers an opportunity to ethically study the effects of nature vs. nurture. She had not been taught to talk or do really anything. However the fact that the researchers are not sure if she was retarded at birth or not kind of makes the results questionable, they finally had a chance to see how language develops in a grown person who was passed the critical period. 2. One of the first things the researchers looked at was her brain waves. They found that she had an abnormally large amount of sleep spindles. This is characteristic of people who are retarded. They also did speech practices where they would repeat a statement to her until she would be able to repeat some part of it back to them. Like when they got her to say “doctor”. In order to make sure she was able to form special bonds with people, the researchers gave her a derogate parent who was with her during times a parent would normally be with a child. 3. They found that there was not really a way for the both of them to get their way entirely. If they wanted to preform good research on her, then some of Genie’s interests were going to put second. While if her interests were all a priority, they would not be able to fully study her. 4. When the researchers first started to teach Genie how to talk, things looked promising; so promising in fact, that they thought they were going to disprove the critical period theory. However, Genies progress soon started to dwindle. She was not able to express...

Genie, Secret of the Wild Child"

...When she was first noticed by authorities in the Los Angeles area, she was, at age 13, still wearing diapers. She had the physical development of an eight-year-old due primarily to her sub-standard diet. When she was young, her father had decided that she was retarded and for this reason, kept her confined most of the time to her room, sometimes tied to a potty chair. Her mother claimed that she too had been a victim of this man. Shortly after Susan Wiley was discovered, on the day that they together were to appear in court, he shot and killed himself. Susan had had very limited social interaction, she could not talk having never been taught how. Her language tutor was Susan Curtiss. Her first psychologist was James Kent. She also met at this time scientist Jay Shurley a psychiatrist who was an expert in social isolation. Her special education teacher was Jean Butler. At this time also David Rigler, a psychologist was a member of the team. He would become more important later in this case, he became her surrogate father, and later he and his wife, becoming her foster parents. She lived with David and his wife Marilyn Rigler and their children, for four years, in their home near Children's Hospital, Los Angeles. The interest in Susan Wiley's case was heightened because linguistic theory at that time was informed greatly by Noam Chomsky. Chomsky had stated that the structures upon which we hang words and grammar were already hard-coded into the newborn's brain. When he learn...

...story of “Genie,” as portrayed in the documentary watched in class called “Secret Of The Wild Child.” You will be graded on both the ideas you present in discussion and the way you present them (discussion skills). The BIG IDEA of the discussion is as follows: · In the nature vs. nurture debate, where do intelligence and language acquisition fall? o Do humans have an innate ability to learn language? Or is language ability the product of the environment? o What is the “critical period” for language development? o Was Genie cognitively disabled at birth, or because of the environment in which she was raised? o Use examples from Genie’s case to support your ideas. Other ideas for discussion include: 1. Do you agree with the allegations of the lawsuit against the Genie team and Children’s Hospital that Genie was exploited for research and her privacy was violated to the detriment of her treatment? Was there an unavoidable conflict between the goals of research and Genie's need to receive treatment and care? Did harm come out of the researchers' good intentions? 2. What, if anything, could have been done differently so that both science and the stability and welfare of Genie could have been served? 3. Was it ethical for any of the members of the Genie team to become her foster parents? Why or why not? Do you agree with the decision of Genie’s teacher and first foster parent, Jean Butler, to deny some of the members of the Genie team contact...
