This article by Mireya Navarro focuses mainly on the energy use in New York. Navarro points out that waste-to-energy plants spend about $300 million annually disposing their garbage and they should to change their way of disposal to a less expensive, more energy efficient way. New York disposes its trash that is transported by trailer-tractor trucks to out-of-state-landfills. Navarro states that this way of disposal is not only expensive but also time consuming and with all the back and forth transportation of trash, a lot of greenhouse gases are being emitted into the air. Navarro proposed that if a 1/3 of the garbage were turned into energy then New York would save about $119 million a year and about 35% of greenhouse gas emissions would be reduced. Navarro believes that if the trash were to benefit the city then by turning the trash into energy use instead of just dumping all the trash into landfills, there would be a positive change. New York is working on building plants to start this beneficiary process. Navarro is very clear in the beginning stating her main points and providing statistics and facts to support the issue. She also cited who she received all the statistics and facts from, which is the Citizens Budget Commission. I believe what Navarro is proposing is very strong and energy efficient. She points out how by converting trash to energy will reduce greenhouse gas in the air, which is great for peoples health, global warming, pollution, and of course the money spent on transporting trash to landfills. I, personally, support recycling and saving energy and New York City is a big city and is abundant in trash. She was clear and to the point but I wonder if there will be some down falls building these plants. Are these plants expensive to build? Are the people of NY agreeing? She did point out though that Europe and some other states have these
