George was a African-American educator and agricultural researcher born into slavery. All Cavers research was on sweet potatoes, peanuts, and other crops. Carver helped out the poor southern farmers and their crops. George was born in Diamond, Missouri in 1864. Carver used his education to enhance his natural gifts and abilities not only to become his best, but also to inspire others to become their best.
When George was a week old his mother was kidnapped in Arkansas. The kidnappers sold George, his other brothers and sisters as slaves to a white family in Kentucky. Carver grew up in Missouri. Carver had a total of ten sisters and brothers. As a child Carver was a very sickly child. After slavery was abolished, Carver was encouraged to continue …show more content…
While Carver was working on his masters degree, he also taught some botany classes and did experiment on plants with other industrial scientist. These experiments and classes helped Carver in later years. While Carver was working and experimenting he helped to change their agriculture department in Tuskegee. When Carver first arrived at the department it was just a simple little barn with some cows and chickens. Carver later changed the department into a laboratory and he got the name of the department changed to agricultural sciences. Carver received many honors during his lifetime and after his death. He is the subject of two commemorative postage stamps, issued in 1947 and 1998, and a special fifty cent coin in 1951. He is honored at a national monument in his hometown and at a museum at Tuskegee University in Alabama. Carver also is the subject of a 1938 feature film, a member of the Hall of Fame for Great Americans and a member of the National Inventors Hall of Fame. When Carver went on to explore the nutritional value of the peanut. Carver began to focus most of his attention toward crops, soil conservation, and how to improve the crop production. Carver came up with many different useful inventions to help out farmers and society. Carver also found different usages for pecans and sweet potatoes. Carver found 108 uses for sweet potatoes, 75 uses from pecans and several hundred uses for more than two dozen other crops common in the South. Among his inventions were a topical pain-relieving oil derived from peanuts, milk substitutes from peanut and soybean oil, and more than 500 dyes from plants. Some of the materials Carver came up with are manufacturing items like ink, paper, plastic, bleach, shaving cream, and synthetic rubber. Carver was a very intelligent man, he had come up with a lot of inventions but Carver only patented three of them. Carvers life is interesting and can be very inspiring to African American students. Craver started his live out as a slave, but through hard work and determination he became a famous in the way agricultural has changed. Most of his inventions were agricultural but he felt there was no need to patent them all. Out of all the money Carver had earned of his lifetime, he never kept much of it. ...George Washington Carver For centuries scientists have expanded the many discoveries within the chemistry community that have provided the world with educational and personal impact. George Washington Carver was a man of honor and help that developed beneficial services to farmers and slaves during his time. He dedicated his life to research projects that over time changed Southern farmers declining economic crisis. “The products he derived from the peanut and the soybean revolutionized the economy of the South by liberating it from an excessive dependence on cotton” (“George Washington carver”, 1993). From being a teacher to well known advocate, Carver was influential man that committed his life to helping others no matter the circumstances. This led him to the developments of methods for conserving nutrients in soil and discoveries of new uses for crops like the peanut helped transform the agricultural economy of the South. Raised the son of a slave mother, Washington was self- motivated and committed to his own education from a young age. The tumultuous time in America’s history during which he lived afforded him new freedoms that came from Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation of 1863 and the eventual success of the North in the Civil War.[1] He took the first opportunity to attend a formal school, Hampton Institute, which led to professorship and the founding of one of the most prestigious African American educational institutions of the nineteenth century, Tuskegee Institute in Alabama.[2] When the Civil War ended in 1865, many newly freed black Americans sought education at all levels. But there were few trade schools or public schools that they were allowed to enroll in.[3] Among the first black colleges to meet the need was Tuskegee University, established in 1881.[4] Booker T. Washington was born a slave on a plantation five years before the Civil War began, near Hales Ford, Virginia, on James Burroughs’s plantation in 1856. The slaves on the Burroughs’ farm learned that they were free in spring of 1865. ...were five separate cases that were filed, dealing with the desegregation of schools. In all but one of these cases, the schools for whites were of better quality than the schools for the blacks. The African-Americans argued that this situation was unjust and unconstitutional1. Education has been long regarded as a valuable asset for all of America's adolescence. However, when this benefit is deprived of to a specific group, measures must be taken to defend its educational right. In the 1950's, a courageous group of activists launched a legal attack on segregation in schools. The one who headed this attack was NAACP attorney Thurgood Marshall. We find that his legal strategies would contribute wholly to the closure of educational segregation. After the Civil War ended in 1865, Congress passed the 14th amendment that stated that all people born in the United States are considered citizens. The 14th amendment also proclaims that individual states cannot make any laws to take away a person's right to life, liberty, or property. Segregation laws made it permissible to keep races distant as long as each race had its own access to equal facilities, which what was known as "separate but equal,” but many people disagreed with this. It had given a sense of hope to many African-American parents that their son or daughter could possibly now get an equal education and an opportunity to succeed.
