In George Gascoigne’s poem, “For That He Looked Not upon Her,” Gascoigne addresses the tempting and enticing aspects of a seducing female he deems dangerous to even look at in fear of what a relationship could bring. To do so, Gascoigne uses poetic elements such as vivid imagery, descriptive diction, and a framed form of writing to artfully display the speaker’s complex attitude.
When initially describing the speaker’s actions and other elements throughout the poem, Gascoigne implements imagery that allows the reader to visualize the events of the poem. He encapsulates the narrator's feelings through the acknowledgment of his “louring head” and his eyes taking “no delight in range…,” (Lines 2 - 3). Imagery is also present in the dismal images throughout the poem. To further argue for or validate his actions, the speaker describes his existence as “still in deep deceit,” (Line 8). In line six, Gascoigne inserts the word “trustless” which describes the mouse’s portrayal of the bait he wishes to consume. This word can relate back to the speaker’s choice of not choosing to look at the woman in discussion. He thinks she is a dangerous person who appears to only bring harm to those around her. Gascoigne also uses the word “bale” in line fourteen as a descriptor of the woman’s ominous and deceitful eyes from which the speaker refrains from looking. The inclusion of these words further add to the portrayal of the speaker and what his life’s miserable
